  • Jacob Colliers Dont You Know Solo with Snarky Puppy

    1:03

My attempt at Jacob Collier's solo from Don't You Know. Recorded my own backings for this one. Credit to Lef Germenlis for the transcription:

  • Jacob Collier - Dont You Know

    9:19

I wanted to transcribe this song for years! I'm so happy that eventually, I gave it a try. This is the song a friend of mine used to introduce me to Jacob Collier. Needless to say, I immediately fell in love with his music. There are too many things that I'd love to mention about this song, but here's a small selection of what I like about this tune the most:

00:11 Jacob loves to sneak urban / everyday life sounds into his music. I am really fond of his love for nature, as audible in the birdsong in these bars. I think it is pretty safe to say that one of the birds is a blackbird.

01:09 Chords stacked from fourths. This is a technique Jacob loves to use as much as Joe Hisaishi does. In this regard, these chords really come from the dark side of the circle of fifths. You should definitely go and check June Lee's interview(s) with Jacob.

02:00 Over the course of the entire song, Jacob plays with the numbers 5 and 7, especially rhythmically. Beyond the 5/4 and 7/4 measures, in these bars Jacob uses a 5 bars long septuplet loop in pan center, while providing a foundation with an organ that is based on a five quaver motif and a clapping rhythm built on a 7/8 vibe.

02:11 Do you recall how in an interview with June Lee, Jacob talked about how (especially chromatic) voice leading can trump functional harmony? Now, this part is certainly proof of that.

    02:26 Potential Stevie Wonder reference

03:37 Not only is the beginning of the piano solo a 5:7 polyrhythm, but it is ultra-hyper-mega-meta-mixolydian as well! The first few notes are stacked fourths in a row, so the beginning of the solo comes from the dark side of the circle of fifths (again).

04:50 Pay attention to the quintuplets in the piano solo!

04:57 Chords based on fourths in piano comping again

    05:39 THESE! CHORDS!

05:53 A nasty nested tuplet: a quintuplet inside a quintuplet inside a bar of 7/4

    06:52 4 against 7 (cowbell)

06:57 Notice how Jacob changes the tuning to create an effect of destabilization and destruction. Over the course of four bars, what appears to be F# major seems to get closer and closer to F major until finally, in bar 173, stability is restored and we're actually back in F (B).

07:08 Transpose the upcoming four bars down by one octave and you will feel like you're actually listening to funky chicken.

07:43 That gameshow vibe! I kinda lament over the fact that this part hasn't been used in the Snarky Puppy version.

    07:58 Banjo!

08:58 From now on, it will take Jacob 7 steps and exactly (!) five bars of 5/4 to close the door behind him while leaving his room.

  • Jacob Collier live at the #JammJam with Quincy Jones and Friends

    6:55

Before the days of quarantine, our JammJam live events hosted some of the nation’s most impactful musicians for incredible nights of unfiltered, collaborative raw convergence in the round as the who’s who of the music industry enjoyed the music from the packed sidelines. Last year, the incomparable Jacob Collier took the JammJam stage with his rendition of Michael Jackson’s hit song “Human Nature” for a special night honoring the legendary Quincy Jones. Today, the performance has been made available for us to reminisce that in-person, packed house concert sensation and continuing to remind us what a brilliant and skilled artist Jacob is.

Jacob’s latest album Djesse Vol. 3 received three 2021 GRAMMY Award nominations, including Album Of The Year. He was also nominated for Best R&B Performance: All I Need (with Mahalia & Ty Dolla $ign), and Best Arrangement, Instrumentals & Vocals: He Won't Hold You (Feat. Rapsody). The British musician, producer, songwriter and arranger now has a remarkable seven career GRAMMY Nominations, including four GRAMMY Award wins. Earlier this year, Collier earned two GRAMMY Awards for arrangements from his Djesse Vol. 1 and Djesse Vol. 2 albums.

At this JammJam, the event was filled wall-to-wall with music royalty such as Quincy Jones himself and Harvey Mason Jr., Recording Academy Chairman. Jacob took the stage to perform an impromptu solo version of “She’s Out of My Life,” mesmerizing everyone in the room before delivering his beautiful rendition of “Human Nature.” He then started an extended jam session that combined the international musical talents of Alfredo Rodriguez (Cuba), Munir Hossn (Brazil), Eric Zayne (Democratic Republic of Congo) and Elmo Lovano (US).

2:18 Jacob asks drummer Donald Barrett Can you get me a back beat? and the jam elevates

    LYRICS
    I’m a slow burn
    And you’re a quitter
Are you mad I didn’t burn out like you?
    Now it’s my turn
    So you’re bitter
And all you wanna do is blame me
    Every time you lose

    You’re a tyrant
    With no one to rule
How’s that working out for you?
    On an island
    Cause you cut your lifeline
Now you’re wallowing in solitude (yeah)

    I held on to you
Even when I saw through you
You always had it out for me
Burned down the house we built
Too proud to face the guilt
    Looking for revenge
    And dyin’ to rile me

Be cruel if you want to (cruel if ya want what)
What are you trying to prove?
Come at me if you’re going to (come on if you’re going to)
I don’t have time for trouble like you

    You’re a taker (taker!)
And I gave you so much time (gave you so much)
How much is enough for you?

And you’re dyin’ (oooh! gimme some of that)
    For one more fight
But you can never stick it out
    Long enough to win

    I held on to you
Even when I saw through you
You always had it out for me
Burned down the house we built
Too proud to face the guilt
    Looking for revenge
    And dyin’ to rile me

(Uh oh.) Ah! I held on to you (I held on to you)
Ah! How much is enough (how much is enough for you)
Ah! I held on to you (I held on to you)

Be cruel if you want to
(You wanna be cruel? You wanna be cruel?)
What are you trying to prove?
(What are you tryin’ to prove?!)
Come at me if you’re going to
(You wanna come at? Go on and come at!)
I don’t have time for trouble

Be cruel if you want to (cruel if ya want what)
What are you trying to prove?
Come at me if you’re going to (come on if you’re going to)
    (Have time… trouble)

Be cruel if you want to (cruel if ya want what)
What are you trying to prove?
Come at me if you’re going to (come on if you’re going to)
I don’t have time for trouble like you

Don’t stop for trouble (won’t stop for trouble!)
Don’t stop for (i ain't gotta stop for no)
    Trouble like (no trouble)
Don’t stop for trouble (trouble won't stop for me)
I don’t have time for trouble like you

    Tiny Desk Concerts:
    Twitter:
    Instagram:

July 22, 2019 | Collin Marshall -- As the the NPR staff gathered to watch his performance, Jacob Collier sprinted full bore down the hallway. It seems the North London 24-year-old can hardly contain his creative energy. It comes out in his wardrobe and most definitely in his music, but it's not misdirected or out of control. These are intricate and precise compositions, like a ship in a bottle made of thousands of planks of wood, yet light enough to sail in a breeze. It's on a scale you wouldn't imagine. Here's an example: This year he covered Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer's Moon River by recording himself 5,000 times and working in 144 other vocal submissions, and then he printed and sold signed copies of his Logic Pro audio session for fans while on tour. Though this is is a regular day for Jacob, his output continues to astonish everyone around him, both in its quality and sheer quantity. This year alone, he's putting out a project called Djesse with four distinct and complete volumes. Many of the songs are being written along the way, including one crafted specifically for the Tiny Desk called It Don't Matter.

The whole Tiny Desk Concert has a lot to unpack. Check my math, but by my count Jacob plays seven instruments, if you include his singing. And you should — Jacob's stamp has always been to use voice in his compositions like a Swiss army knife, and virtually every combination of band members harmonizes at some point in the show. It's reflective of his philosophy on music as a connecting tool, to use the instrument we all possess, which drew me to his art in the first place. And as if to make good on those beliefs and bring all of us into one moment, he invited the crowd to sing the final lyrics of the concert together. It was the end of the show, but not even close to the limit of Jacob's imaginative bounds. He obsessed over leaving us a gift: a fake ID fashioned out of a passport photo and an Oyster Card — London's public transit fare card — which now sits on the hallowed shelves of the Tiny Desk. Extra credit if you can spot it in future episodes.

  • Jacob Collier: Tiny Desk Concert

    16:13

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

July 9, 2020 | Colin Marshall -- Polymath musician Jacob Collier has been championing this style of one-man-band music videos since 2012, singing every note and playing every instrument. His cover of Stevie Wonder's Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thingearned him a devout YouTube following at the age of 19, and he hasn't slowed down since. The London wunderkind owns four Grammy Awards already, including two at the age of 22 in 2017, and his evolution as a bandleader has been evident in his live performances ( like when he came to NPR for a Tiny Desk concert last year). Now 25, and with nearly a decade of experience producing every aspect of his own music from his home, Collier is uniquely positioned to crank out his best work from quarantine. In this video, each of the four parts was recorded in a single take. Pay close attention ; it's easy to get tripped up inside Jacob's head as he arranges this Rubik's Cube of a video production, which feels both like a magic trick and a no-strings-attached bedroom session.

Since the pandemic hit hard in March, Collier has been hustling in his Internet-famous room. He's played duets over Instagram Live with the likes of Chris Martin, JoJo and Daniel Caesar, recorded a song in his bathroom, and he's in the middle of releasing his ambitious four-volume record, Djesse. The last song in this video is the premiere of his new single He Won't Hold You, which will appear on Vol. 3, due out later this year.

After a decade of relentless touring and recording in all but complete obscurity, the Texas-bred/New York-based quasi-collective suddenly found itself held up by the press and public as one of the major figures in the jazz world. But as the category names for two Grammy awards would indicate (Best R&B Performance 2014 and Best Contemporary Instrumental Album in 2016 and 2017), Snarky Puppy isn’t exactly a jazz band. It’s not a fusion band, and it’s definitely not a jam band. It’s probably best to take Nate Chinen of the New York Times’ advice, as stated in an online discussion about the group, to “take them for what they are, rather than judge them for what they’re not.”

Snarky Puppy is a collective of sorts with as many as 25 members in regular rotation. They each maintain busy schedules as sidemen (with such artists as Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and D’Angelo), producers (for Kirk Franklin, David Crosby, and Salif Keïta), and solo artists (many of whom are on the band’s indy label, GroundUP Music). At its core, the band represents the convergence of both black and white American music culture with various accents from around the world. Japan, Argentina, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Puerto Rico all have representation in the group’s membership. But more than the cultural diversity of the individual players, the defining characteristic of Snarky Puppy’s music is the joy of performing together in the perpetual push to grow creatively.

On March 8th, 2013, Snarky Puppy and a host of special guests convened at the Jefferson Center in Roanoke VA. The project was to record a series of live performances in audio and video that would bring attention and benefit to the ongoing work of the center. The Jefferson Center is a non-profit arts organization that is revitalizing a key neighborhood in Roanoke with the restoration of Jefferson High School and the renovation of the Shaftman Performance Hall. The hall brings world class music to the local community through the Music Lab, providing education and recording space for local children.

The Music Lab at Jefferson Center is working daily to pull from every social and economic class of the Roanoke community and create the next wave of real, human musicians. They host low cost or free after-school programs for any interested young people filled with visits by guest artists, private instrumental instruction, and recording training. Wafting out of the little studios and rehearsal rooms on the third floor of Jefferson Center, you can hear Afro-beat in Swahili, hip-hop in Liberian Kreyol, the blues coming from the guitar of a 13 year-old prodigy, and the undeniable sound of young musicians growing. It's a thing that needs to be supported at all costs across this country, and by purchasing this record, you've done it.

A portion of every sale will go to the Music Lab at Jefferson Center.
