Four sisters: Kim Sledge (born 21 August 1957), Debbie Sledge (born 9 July 1954), Joni Sledge (born 13 September 1956), and Kathy Sledge (born 6 January 1959).

Best known for their work with Chic in the late '70s, Sister Sledge reached the height of their popularity during the disco era but had been recording since the early '70s and were still active in the late '90s. The group was formed in Philadelphia in 1971, when the sisters' ages ranged from 12 to 16, and they recorded their first single, Time Will Tell, for the Philly-based Money Back label. (For the first few years, the group called itself Sisters Sledge.)

In 1972, Sister Sledge signed with Atco and recorded its second single, Weatherman, which was followed by the Jackson 5-like Mama Never Told Me in 1973. It wasn't until 1979, when Chic leaders Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards produced We Are Family, that Sister Sledge really exploded commercially. He's the Greatest Dancer and We Are Family's title song both soared to number one on the R&B charts.

  • Sister Sledge ~ Hes The Greatest Dancer 1978 Disco Purrfection Version

    12:29

The Chic boys were given the green light to produce any Atlantic group they wanted. At the time the biggest stars were The Rolling Stones, Yes and Bette Midler but they went with a group that was not that well known, Sister Sledge. The sisters were signed to Atlantic in 1973, but were unable to find a producer who was able to put them on the map until 1975 when they released Love Don't You Go Through No Changes On Me that peaked at #92 on the Hot 100.

The LPs We Are Family and Chic's own C'est Chic were recorded at the same time. Did you know that I Want Your Love was written for Sister Sledge and Greatest Dancer was scheduled to be a Chic song? At the time the men had not yet written Le Freak nor Greatest Dancer, but they did have a groove for the latter that they decided to give to the sisters. Unfinished as it was, the song was fully realized in the studio in an unusual way. Kathy Sledge says she learned her vocals BEFORE the music track was completed, with Nile feeding her the lyrics line by line while she made up her own melody. Then the boys finished the fully realized version complete with the Chic strings and released it February 10, 1979 and the sisters got their first #1 R&B hit with it and the song peaked at #9 on the Hot100.

There was some controversy in the studio with the line My créme de la créme please take me home and the song almost did not make the record. The sisters were worried that it would make them look like loose women and were adamant in singing please don't go home instead, which is what they sing when they do it live. Rodgers recalls that they were furious and he felt That's lame, what do you mean 'Please don't go home'? He ain't going to go home because he's the greatest dancer and it doesn't make any sense. Why would he go home? Guys you are making the song about you, It ain't about you, it's about him. 'Please don't go home' what are you talking about, you just nullified the whole meaning of the song, this guy wears the finest clothes, he's the greatest dancer, he's gonna stay there longer than you!

The song tells a story about him, not you, he is the subject of the song. The girls kept saying 'My mother is going to think we are all whores'. My songs are important, lyrics, everything. There is not one word that is not very, very important to me. It has to be a complete story, a beginning, a middle and and end. If the logic is all of a sudden thrown away, I can't appreciate that. Nile prevailed and the song was recorded with the lyrics he wrote. To this day the girls still sing, please don't go home. I never thought the lyrics made the girls look cheap, I knew they were telling a story.

Rarely does an artist pay homage to the classics like Dimitri From Paris. The Grammy nominated producer, remixer, composer and DJ has made every one of his repertoire of reworks sound effortless; no mean feat when the original tracks are by the likes of Disco’s greatest musicians. He has a long history of remixing classic records, starting in the late 80s and culminating in this achievement of a lifetime, ‘Dimitri From Paris presents Le CHIC Remix’.

This 20-track album features three brand new remixes alongside the much-loved essentials all brilliantly remastered for 2018, tracks that have resonated with artists from Frankie Knuckles to Disclosure, Gilles Peterson to Mark Ronson. Alongside the remixes are instrumentals of each (four of which are previously unreleased), for the ultimate bumper pack. For this project Dimitri was entrusted to use the original studio masters from circa 1978 - 1980 that feature all of the individually recorded musical and vocal elements. The songs have been respectfully remastered, unveiling never-before-heard performances, turning the spotlight on the beautiful orchestrations of one the most unique and highly-revered production duos of the Disco era and beyond; Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards, along with their CHIC Organization of musicians.

Kicking off with the unmistakeable CHIC staple ‘Le Freak’, Dimitri’s timeless remix making the exquisite instrumental harmonies shine like only Dimitri can, the album delves next into ‘Lost In Music’ and CHIC’s classic ‘I Want Your Love’. Norma Jean Wright’s life-affirming ‘Saturday’, written by CHIC along with Robert L Cotter in 1978, has been remixed by Dimitri to cinematic proportions, the climax of many of his DJ sets. Sister Sledge’s ‘He’s The Greatest Dancer’ is given the Dimitri treatment with a new extended mix, drawing out the string motifs, showcasing unheard sections from the original master tapes, sounding better than ever. Further exclusives include ‘My Forbidden Lover’ and another Sister Sledge masterpiece, ‘Got To Love Somebody’ with cowbell and horns resplendent. More highlights include a new remaster of Sister Sledge’s evergreen ‘Thinking Of You’ and the final track, an underdog from French chanson singer turned one-time Disco act, Sheila & B. Devotion ‘Your Love Is Good’, a euphoric high to close on and another track using elements from never-heard-before recorded outtakes.

Through Disco grooves and meticulously reverent production, ‘Dimitri From Paris presents Le CHIC Remix’ gets to the heart of why CHIC’s music remains so universally relevant, underlining the enduring cultural significance of dance music in its most unabashed form. This album is a demonstration of how captivating the sound of a full orchestra of musicians can be, compared to today’s largely computer generated offerings, celebrating the eternally endearing qualities of some of CHIC’s best-selling productions, not to mention, for over 40 years, the unquestionable power of a great Disco record.

Our sessions are recorded with the amazing British-designed Sontronics microphones. Usually we’ll use an STC-2 on vocals and we also love the Orpheus (the one with the large spherical head) on acoustic guitars, the chunky DM-1B and the STC-1 pencil mics. Check out their website – – and if you’re interested in any of their mics, email us on team@ontsofa.com and we’ll put you in touch with the lovely Sontronics team.

  • Sister Sledge ~ Thinking Of You 1979 Disco Purrfection Version

    8:32

Here is the new and improved one! I had originally intended for this to be my Inauguration Day upload with best wishes to the new President Joseph Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, but here it is a little late. I really paid attention to the comments for the first upload of this and I think you will be quite happy with this remix. That first remix made my ears bleed.

This is classic Sister Sledge collaborating with one of the greatest production teams of all time, Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards.

It was an album track from their 1979 opus We Are Family that was released as the B side of their great Lost In Music single, but did not get much attention back in da day and never had the extended treatment until now, and since today is such a landmark day here you go!

Everyone was crazy for Chic! It was Chic, Donna Summer and the Bee Gees who ruled the dance floors, they each had an exciting sound that drove the rest of us to dance for two or three hours straight! I hardly ever took a break, never got winded but sipping on beer I had to step away for a short time.

Thinking Of You is a valentine, a sweetly simple song with a beat that updates the classic girl group sound with elegance. I hope you enjoy this special remix! Happy Happy! Love DJDiscoCat.

    Sister Sledge.
    We are Family.
    1979.
    Joni - Carol - Kathy - Kim.

    Lyrics:

    *We are family
I got all my sisters with me
    We are family
    Get up, everybody, and sing

    (*repeat)

    Everyone can see we're together
    As we walk on by
(FLY!) And we fly just like birds of a feather
    I won't tell no lie
(ALL!) All of the people around us they say
    Can they be that close
Just let me state for the record
We're givin' love in a family dose

    (*repeat 2 times)

Livin' life is fun and we've just begun
To get our share of this world's delights
(HIGH!) High hopes we have for the future
    And our goal's in sight
(WE!) No we don't get depressed
Here's what we call our golden rule
Have faith in you and the things you do
You won't go wrong, oh no
    This is our family jewel

    (*repeat with following)

    Sing it to me

    **Get up, get up(get up)
    And sing it to me
    Oh, I can't hear you now(y'all)
Have faith in you and the things you do
    Get up, get up y'all
I got my sisters with me
    Everybody, hey hey hey...
Get up, get up and sing it to me
    We're havin' fun
Life, life has just begun for me, me

    (** repeat)

    Me and my family
Get up, get up and sing it
Sing it, sing it, sing it, sing it to me
    Yeah, we flock together
    Like birds of a feather
    Get up, come on, Joni

    (*repeat to end)

Classic rock-dance tune from the 'All American Girls' album performed on the 'Tomorrow Show.' I wonder if the inspiration for the guitar licks on Michael Jackson's Beat It came from here! In any event, Kathy, Joni, Kim, and Debbie gave a fun performance! Also see the performance of Next Time You'll Know on my channel.
