    1:12:57

    Free Tutorials & Multitracks:

Today I'm visiting my friend Dave Way in his home studio Waystation Studio. Dave is an insanely talented, multi-Grammy winning producer and mixing engineer who has worked with the likes of Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, Sheryl Crow, Boyz II Men, Pink, The Foofighters and many more.

Dave decided to move from working out of major studios to producing and mixing from his home studio several years ago.
In the process, he has gotten rid of a lot of his outboard gear including a beautiful SSL console and is leaning more and more towards mixing in the box.
We discuss the analogue and digital recording and mixing process, what Dave considers to be the benefits of working digitally and if the analogue sound can actually be emulated using plugins now.

Dave gives us a tour of his studio and shows off his favourite pieces of gear (he has plenty unique devices!). We geek out over guitars and as the grand finale Dave even walks us through his drum recording setup!

Matt (Linny) Linesch is a producer & the owner of Infinitespin Recorders in Los Angeles.
Read more about Matt Linesch here:

The studio has a rich history, having been most recently owned by Toto drummer Simon Phillips. It was also once operated by Sheila E., during which time her father painted a mural in the live room that’s still there today.

    Visit Infinitespin Recorders on Instagram:

Matt took over the space in May 2017, making it a warm, comfortable environment for artists to be creatively free–a concept that’s paramount to Matt’s overall approach to working with musicians.

Still working on a mostly analogue set-up, the centerpiece of Infinitespin Recorders is Matt’s 40-channel API console. Built in 1972, the desk changed hands several times, once living at Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco. Over the years it found its way to a home studio in Los Angeles, where a crane was eventually used to remove it from the house! Matt shared a photo of the 1300-pound console being hoisted into the air, which you can see in the video below. It should come as no surprise, then, that it was quite a feat moving the beast into Matt’s studio as well!

In addition to the API, Matt uses a 16-channel Neve sidecar, a Studer A827 tape machine, and an array of outboard gear. We took a look at one of his more recent acquisitions: a UTA Unfairchild compressor that he’s demoing, which was also featured in our recent Eric Valentine interview. He uses a variety of Manley equipment as well, including a Massive Passive stereo EQ which is great for adding a “tube-like” sound to the mix buss.

For a more in-depth look at the space and the gear, please enjoy this interview and studio tour with Matt Linesch of Infinitespin Recorders.

Dave Way Interview & Studio Tour part 2: Q&A, Recording and Music Production, Gear and Guitar Demo.
Grab your Free Producing & Mixing Bundle:

    Hey friends,

This video is the second part of our interview and studio tour with multi-grammy winning producer/mixer Dave Way.

We've received a lot of wonderful comments and questions in the last episode and we're covering them in today's interview:

We talk about drum recording and micing techniques, Dave's favourite vocal recording chain and music production. Dave tears down some of the dogmas about recording and producing of the modern age:

    - Dave's unconventional way of recording vocals to help singers keep pitch more easily & his favourite low budget tube microphone, which only costs $700 and has a 251 top end!
    - How to use microphone bleed creatively to add dimension to your mix.
    - How putting limitations on your recording process can spark your creativity and help you to create better arrangements.
    - Recording drum overheads in mono for extra depth.
    - Mixing and matching different styles of music to create something new and exciting: Giving it a twist is what keeps things moving forward, otherwise we’re all just transcribing.
    - Dave explains his advanced hybrid studio setup & routing system, shows off his favourite pieces of outboard equipment and explains what he likes to use them on: From compressors, preamps, custom guitar amps to clocks and even his process of backing up his audio files and mixes!

As a bonus, we're also trying out several electric guitars of Dave's amazing collection:

    - Gibson ES - 330, which is almost identical to the Epiphone Casino, which was played by John Lennon, George Harrison, and Paul McCartney.
    - A custom Tele which Dave was given by Val McCallum
    - Custom guitar built by Larry Pogreba

I hope you enjoy this interview, lots of gold nuggets in this one!

    Many Thanks,

    Warren

I´m really excited about today´s video: I´m interviewing Grammy winning Producer and Mixing Engineer Cameron Webb.
Cameron has been the producer and mixer for Motörhead for many years, until the tragic death of lead-singer Lemmy last year.

He tells us about key moments in his career and the story of how he first met Motörhead: He almost blew his chance of working with them! Fortunately he got the gig and went on to build a long-lasting relationship with the band.

Cameron shares very cool inside information about the Motörhead, their approach to recording, making music and life in general.

We take an extensive tour of his studio, talk about guitar recording techniques, classic amps and Cameron walks us through his beautiful equipment. Every one of his devices has a story of why he picked it up, and he shares his favourite uses for several pieces of analogue gear.

We had an amazing time: there are a lot of very interesting and funny insider stories, you´ll be able to learn from Cameron´s experience and gain plenty of new insights to recording, production and mixing.

  • Simon Phillips - Interview

    23:20

Hi MusicOffili and YouTubers, Simon Phillips is one of the most famous drummers worldwide, thanks to his drumming with Toto but also to the many side projects and collaborations, for example with Joe Satriani, Whitesnake, Judas Priest, Pete Townshend and many, many others (his discography is boundless); we were lucky to meet him thanks to the Italian date of the tour for the album Protocol III, a third chapter after Protocol II (2013) and the first LP published in 1988.
Phillips was obiouvsly with his terrific band: Andy Timmons on guitar, Steve Weingart (Dave Weckl, Steve Lukather) on keyboards and Ernest Tibbs (Allan Holdsworth, Andy Summers, Natalie Cole) on bass .
We now offer you a great interview where we talk with him about his way of working on music, his personal career, his drums equipment (TAMA, Zildjian) and every other aspect, of course, about the project protocol, now almost thirty years .
We wish you an enjoyable show, with this extraordinary musician!

Dream Station Star Series - Simon Phillips (VLOG 1)

    #DreamStation #Vlog #SimonPhillips #StarSeries

One of the world's best drummer, music producer and recording engineer Grammy Nominee Mr. Simon Phillips visiting Karachi as part of the Dream Station Star Series

Simon Phillips (born 6 February 1957) is an English jazz, pop, and rock drummer[1] and record producer. He worked with rock bands during the 1970s and 1980s and was the drummer for the band Toto from 1992 to 2014.

Phillips started to play professionally at the age of twelve in his father's dixieland band for four years. Phillips was the drummer on the 1976 album 801 Live with Phil Manzanera and Brian Eno. He worked as a session drummer for Jeff Beck, Gary Moore, Bernie Marsden, Mike Oldfield, Judas Priest, Tears for Fears, and The Who. He was the drummer for The Who during the band's American reunion tour in 1989. He became the drummer for the band Toto in 1992 after the death of Jeff Porcaro.

Phillips began to play professionally at the age of twelve in a dixieland band led by his father, Sid Phillips.[1] After his father's death, he started playing pop and rock and found work in a production of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. He worked as a session musician for cast members, and this led to other session work. Beginning in the 1970s, he worked with Jeff Beck, Gil Evans, Stanley Clarke, Peter Gabriel, Pete Townshend, and Frank Zappa.

Phillips was the drummer in the Phil Manzanera and Brian Eno supergroup 801 on their 1976 album 801 Live. He replaced Judas Priest drummer Alan Moore on the band's Sin After Sin album (1977) and went on to record Michael Schenker's 1980 debut album The Michael Schenker Group. In the early 1980s, Phillips formed part of RMS with session musicians Mo Foster and Ray Russell. He was the drummer for The Who on their 1989 American reunion tour and appeared on solo recordings by band members Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend.

In 1989 he recorded his debut album in the band Protocol. He moved to America in 1992 and was invited to become the drummer for the band Toto. Five years later he led a jazz band that performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival. In 2002 he recorded a jazz album, Vantage Point, with trumpeter Walt Fowler, saxophonist Brandon Fields, and pianist Jeff Babko. He has co-produced and engineered albums by Mike Oldfield, Derek Sherinian, and Toto. After leaving Toto, he became a member of a trio with Hiromi Uehara and bassist Anthony Jackson.[3] Phillips has also worked with Big Country, Jack Bruce, David Gilmour, Steve Lukather, Big Jim Sullivan, and Whitesnake.

In 2009, Phillips joined with keyboardist Philippe Saisse and bassist Pino Palladino in forming an instrumental jazz/funk rock trio: Phillips Saisse Palladino, PSP, which toured in Europe in 2009 and 2010. Phillips also performed on Joe Satriani's album Super Colossal, appearing on multiple tracks. Phillips appears in Alan Parsons' Art & Science of Sound Recording educational video series, as well as the program's single All Our Yesterdays. He played in the Michael Schenker Group album In the Midst of Beauty and took part to the band's 30th Anniversary world tour in 2010. Phillips is featured on Hiromi Uehara's 2011 album, Voice. He also toured with Hiromi and bassist Anthony Jackson as part of the Hiromi Trio Project.

In 2019 Phillips was featured on the album Origin of Species. In addition to playing drums and keyboards, he engineered, mixed, and helped produce.

Phillips cites Buddy Rich, Tony Williams, Billy Cobham, Steve Gadd, Ian Paice, Tommy Aldridge and Bernard Purdie as his main influences.

  • SIMON PHILLIPS - interview @Linea Rock 2019 by Barbara Caserta

    41:14

Stuck right in between soundcheck and dinner, on November 19th 2019 yours truly BARBARA CASERTA had finally the chance to talk to Mr SIMON PHILLIPS, who delivered a wonderful performance with the amazing quintet PROTOCOL on the 30th Anniversary Tour (presenting the brand new 6CD box set, with all the production plus bonus material) at Druso in Bergamo, Italy. Honored and happy, here I lead you to the Champions League of drumming! In the past I was invited to meet him twice, and both times it was cancelled due to change of schedule, traffic, delays… so the amount of questions during the years accumulated and finally found an answer in this long chat about his long, bright, tireless career: let’s start with his “new plaything”, his luxury toy named Protocol conceived originally as a studio project, then developed into a proper band; and what’s Protocol’s protocol? is he demanding with his musicians?... Of course we talked about TOTO: got some rare stories, including his audition, great memories on how Steve & the boys made him feel welcome to the family in the early 90s, his favourite songs to play in those days (from his albums and back), his mixed emotions about the band calling it quits… He runs off some of his many collaborations with the biggest names in music, including his mentor Mike Oldfield and Judas Priest (1977, very young he played on the “Sin After Sin” album and he remembers it like it was yesterday!)… the variety of his style which led to a monster-creativity... aaaand “those drums!”! His main influences, his confrontation with two separate music worlds: Jeff Porcaro and Keith Moon (Simon infact also played with The Who)… And, does he approaches music any differently working on his own then as a sideman?… How he figures himself mainly by DNA: drummer, well-rounded musician or as a producer? Is it maybe the combination of the three which makes somebody like Simon the real deal, a champion of music? He started to play as a child and succeeded making a living thru this passion: today we see hundreds of kids playing like consummate musicians, here on You Tube for example: having been a prodigy from an early age, is it something healthy from his point of view or in the end it someway stole his childhood, making it even more risky nowadays to cross the line? And does he have a ultimate goal after such a brilliant career? Of course he does… and you’ll hear from the voice of His Excellency od the Drums!
Very special thanks to Domenico Turiano of GGM Studios, to Marijo Suica and to you, little big man with the magic sticks!Enjoy & Share!
