She sounds like a folk singer, her diction clear as a mountain stream while she weaves whimsical tales of ships (Night Before Mutiny), conversations with Venus (The Moths Are Real), and rivals who meet at dawn with pens and open scorn (Lady Fortune). But there is an eccentricity to Serafina Steer that resists categorisation, and fills her songs with surprises.

One moment she is pastoral, as on Skinny Dipping, a gauzy reverie on nakedness in which her fingers skitter over her harp like dragonflies; the next tart and opaque, as on Ballad of Brick Lane, which starts off bemoaning the hipster hub of London before turning to more abstract territory. Disco Compilation is brilliant, building from a harp backing to a pulsing beat and a celebration of music's power to console. Jarvis Cocker -- a fan of Steer's 2010 album, Change Is Good, Change Is Good -- produces with a relish for her oddities that is infectious -- The Guardian -- 4 stars

    More about Serafina Steer:

A live performance of Fiction's homage to Alan Turing, featuring Serafina Steer on harp and vocals. Filmed and edited by Stella Malfilatre.

The original version of 'The Apple' appears on Fiction's debut album, out now on Moshi Moshi.

Watch the official video for 'The Apple':

Fiction's new single, The Apple - the latest offering from their highly praised debut album - is dedicated to Alan Turing, the genius computer scientist who was instrumental in breaking the Nazi enigma code at Bletchley Park in the second world war. Turing is widely believed to have committed suicide by eating an apple laced with cyanide after a series of tragic events, as illustrated in the accompanying video directed by Tom Clatworthy and Gence Barbar.

In 1952, whilst employed at the mathematics department at Manchester University, Turing published The Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis, a highly influential paper that looked at pattern formation and the existence of the Fibonacci sequence in plant structures. In the same year he began dating a 19-year-old man named Arnold Murray after meeting outside a local cinema and inviting him back for lunch. Just before Christmas, Turing discovered that Murray had burgled his flat. During the police interview, he admitted that the pair were in a sexual relationship and both men were put on trial for sexual offences - homosexuality still being criminal offence in Britain at the time. Turing pleaded guilty and was given the choice between a prison sentence or chemical castration using female growth hormones. He chose the latter and suffered traumatic side effects including impotence and gynecomastia (the enlargement of breast tissue). On the 8th of June 1954, Turing was found dead in his bedroom with a half-eaten apple by his side.

'The Apple' is a timely tribute to Alan Turing and a fitting finale to Fiction's intricate and highly developed debut album, The Big Other.
    --------------------------------------------------------------

    Lyrics:

    they said Alan
    they said listen, Alan
    they said listen, Alan
    you've got a simple decision
    a simple choice
but it's one or the other

    so I had a choice
    I had a choice
    I had a choice

but they've been making my mind up
    they've been making my body
    into something it's not

    the algorithm was nothing special
    I just took a bite
the code was really nothing much
and I just took a bite

    they said it's not right
    they said it's not right
    they said it's not right
and we can't let you do that
we can't let you get away with that

    so I took a bite
    I took a bite
    I took a bite

because they've been making my mind up
    they've been making my body
    into something it's not

    the algorithm was nothing special
    I just took a bite
