Spandau Ballet are one of Britain’s great iconic bands having sold over 25 million records, scored numerous multi-platinum albums and amassed 23 hit singles across the globe since their humble beginnings as a group of friends with dreams of stardom in the late 1970s. It wasn’t long before they became fully-fledged members of the iconic Blitz Club scene and established themselves as one of the super-groups of the 80s.

The band's classic line-up features brothers Gary and Martin Kemp on guitars, vocalist Tony Hadley, saxophonist Steve Norman and drummer John Keeble.

After two decades apart, the band reformed in 2009, embarking on a sold-out tour. In 2014 the band released a critically lauded documentary film ‘Soul Boys Of The Western World’ and returned to the studio recording three new tracks 'Steal', 'Soul Boy' and 'This Is The Love' for the anthology 'The Story'. ‘

This has been followed by the ‘Soulboys Of The Western World’ world tour wowing crowds and critics alike with the band making rapturous returns for the first time in 25 years to USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and parts of mainland Europe.

Spandau Ballet’s hits include Gold, True, To Cut A Long Story Short, Through The Barricades and many more.

    Lyrics

When you hold me in the street
And you kiss me on the dance floor
I wish that it could be like that
Why can't it be like that?
    'Cause I'm yours

    We keep behind closed doors
Every time I see you, I die a little more
Stolen moments that we steal as the curtain falls
    It'll never be enough

It's obvious you're meant for me
Every piece of you, it just fits perfectly
Every second, every thought, I'm in so deep
But I'll never show it on my face

    But we know this
We got a love that is homeless

Why can't you hold me in the street?
Why can't I kiss you on the dance floor?
I wish that it could be like that
Why can't we be like that?
    'Cause I'm yours

When you're with him, do you call his name
Like you do when you're with me? Does it feel the same?
Would you leave if I was ready to settle down
Or would you play it safe and stay?

    Girl, you know this
We got a love that is hopeless

Why can't you hold me in the street?
Why can't I kiss you on the dance floor?
I wish that it could be like that
Why can't we be like that?
    'Cause I'm yours

And nobody knows I'm in love with someone's baby
I don't wanna hide us away
Tell the world about the love we're making
    I'm living for that day
    Someday

Why can't I hold you in the street?
Why can't I kiss you on the dance floor?
I wish that we could be like that
Why can't we be like that?
    'Cause I'm yours, I'm yours

Oh, why can't you hold me in the street?
Why can't I kiss you on the dance floor?
I wish that it could be like that
Why can't it be like that?
    'Cause I'm yours

Why can't I say that I'm in love?
I wanna shout it from the rooftop
I wish that it could be like that
Why can't we be like that?
    'Cause I'm yours

Why can't we be like that?
Wish we could be like that

    Lyrics:

    I wanna go
    So what’d you say
When you gonna let me know
If you give a damn about me

‘Cause you got my hands tied
    In my defense
    I always fall for confidence
And your compliments look good on me

    Cause nobody knows it better
than the girl in the corner with the scarlet letter
And while you’re watching you may think that she doesn’t matter
But no one knows you better

    I wanna dance
    I wanna dance
    I wanna dance with you
    So take a chance
    take a chance

    Oh yeah

    I need a sign or a signal
I’ve overthought everything I can think of
    Into symbol
I need the coat and your jacket
And the remnants of your cigarette packet

    I wanna go
    So what’d you say
When you gonna let me know
If you give a damn about me

‘Cause you got my hands tied
    In my defense
    I always fall for confidence
And your compliments look good on me

    Cause nobody knows it better
than the girl in the corner with the scarlet letter
and while you’re watching you think that she doesn’t matter

  • Somewhere in Time: John Barry

    6:26

John Barry (1933 - 2011), born in the city of York, Northern England, was a British composer and conductor who provided the musical scores for more than 100 motion pictures and television programs, notably 11 movies featuring Ian Fleming’s iconic spy James Bond: Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Diamonds Are Forever, The Man with the Golden Gun, Moonraker, Octopussy, A View to a Kill, and The Living Daylights.

He initially played the piano and trumpet at dances and as an army bandsman during his military service. He formed in 1957 a rock-and-roll band, the John Barry Seven, and worked with pop singers, including Adam Faith. After agreeing to compose the scores for two films in which Faith had been cast, Barry was approached to do the musical arrangements for Dr. No.

As he continued his career as a composer, he captured five Academy Awards for Born Free (and Oscars for both best score and best song); The Lion in Winter, Out of Africa (1985), and Dances with Wolves (1990), as well as nominations for Mary Queen of Scots (1971) and Chaplin (1992).

His other film scores include Zulu (1964), The Ipcress File (1965), Midnight Cowboy (1969), Somewhere in Time (1980), Body Heat (1981), Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), and Enigma (2001). He also composed for the stage, including the moderately successful musicals Passion Flower Hotel (1965) and Billy (1974), and won four Grammy Awards, notably best jazz instrumental performance, big band, for the film sound track of The Cotton Club (1984).

In 1998 John Barry was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame; in 1999 he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) at Buckingham Palace for services to music, and received the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Academy Fellowship Award in 2005. Also in 2005, the American Film Institute ranked John Barry's score for Out of Africa No.15 on their list of the greatest film scores.

The video, however, featured an edited version of the song with many sections of the song taken out including the guitar section starting at 3:28 in the original and ending at 3:38. The total length of the edited version is 3:23 whilst the original is 4:30.

Just Like Heaven is a song by British alternative rock band the Cure. The group wrote most of the songs during recording sessions in southern France in 1987. The lyrics were written by their frontman Robert Smith, who drew inspiration from a past trip to the seashore with his future wife. Smith's memories of the trip formed the basis for the song's accompanying music video. Before Smith had completed the lyrics, an instrumental version of the song was used as the theme for the French television show Les Enfants du Rock.

Just Like Heaven was the third single released from their 1987 album Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. The song became the Cure's first American hit and reached number 40 on the Billboard charts in 1988. It has been praised by critics and covered by artists such as Dinosaur Jr. and Katie Melua. Smith has said he considers Just Like Heaven to be one of the band's strongest songs.

Robert Smith, the song's primary writer, described it in 1992 as both a throw your hands in the air, let's get happy kind of record and a very naïve, happy type of pop song.

Breaking the Law is a song by British heavy metal band Judas Priest, originally released on their 1980 album British Steel. The song is one of the band's better known singles, and is readily recognized by its opening guitar riff.

Prior to releasing 1980's British Steel, Judas Priest had been making moves toward streamlining their music into a simpler, less processed sound. That approach came to full fruition on British Steel. Breaking the Law combines a recognisable minor-key opening riff and a rhythmic chorus as its main hooks. There is a change-up on the mostly instrumental bridge, a new chord progression with Halford shouting You don't know what it's like! before the sound effect of a police car's siren leads back into the main riff. More recent live performances of the song have featured a short solo by Downing over the bridge. The outro of the song is the main riff played repeatedly with Halford singing the chorus and Downing playing power chords.

The lyrics tell of someone at the rock bottom in their life – out of work, unable to find work, frustrated, feeling that nobody cares if they live or die, eventually turning to crime for survival.[1]

The song features some sound effects, including the sound of breaking glass and a police siren. The band were recording British Steel at Tittenhurst Park, which was the home of The Beatles's drummer Ringo Starr. For the breaking glass effect, the band used milk bottles that a milkman brought them in the morning, and the police siren was actually guitarist K. K. Downing using the tremolo arm on his Stratocaster.

    Rob Halford – vocals
    K. K. Downing – lead guitar
    Glenn Tipton – rhythm guitar
    Ian Hill – bass guitar
    Dave Holland – drums

  • Replacing Ringo? The Story Behind Bernard Purdie and The Beatles

    13:49

“There are four drummers on the Beatles records. Ringo’s not one of them.” - Bernard Purdie

Taken at face value, this is a bold claim, if not a crazy one.

But consider that it’s the same person who said, “I overdubbed the drumming on twenty-one tracks of the first three Beatle albums.” And then consider that the same man is one of the must influential and famous drummers in recorded music history.

In this video, I’ll detail Purdie’s claims, explain why he said what he did, and separate fact from fiction.

Once described by ROLLING STONE as a “talented Zelig,” Carla Olson has received critical acclaim for her work as a solo performer, band leader (The Textones), and producer. In varying capacities she has worked with former Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor, Percy Sledge (Sledge has recorded five songs that Olson has written or co-written), Ry Cooder, Gene Clark, Don Henley, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, John Fogerty, Mikael Rickfors, and many others. Her musical partnerships in the ‘80s included a now classic duets album with former Byrd Gene Clark (So Rebellious A Lover) and a pair of albums with Mick Taylor. In 2013, after not releasing an album of her own since The Ring Of Truth in 2001, Olson recorded Have Harmony, Will Travel, a duets album featuring Rob Waller, John York, Richie Furay, Juice Newton, James Inveldt, Scott Kempner, Peter Case and Gary Myrick. HAVE HARMONY WILL TRAVEL 2 continues the tradition established on HHWT 1, with 11 new duets including performances with the Eagles’ Timothy B. Schmit, British Invasion Idol Peter Noone, and archival recordings with Percy Sledge and Gene Clark. As with HHWT 1 it is an album of direct, kinetic productions, compelling song choices, and inspired performances. Highlights include the first single, “Goodbye My Love” with Peter Noone and leadoff track “Timber.” Have Harmony, Will Travel 2 is a fitting expansion of the series and an excellent entry point for music fans unfamiliar with Carla Olson.

  • Matt Avery- Hey Everybody!- Scarlet 2005- Written By Matt Avery/Richard Krusky

    4:48

Many who only know Matt Avery as the solo acoustic artist that has become the #1 Voted Entertainer in Key West, Florida, or as the small town boy does good by being on the Tonight Show, American Bandstand and other national TV shows ( he was the guitarist and backing singer for teen star Tiffany in the 80s), as well as being a winner on Star Search 1990, will be surprised to see him in even earlier days. He was a co-founder of an early 80s Columbus, Ohio based glam band called Scarlet. Many inceptions of this local favorite off -the- wall group were realized (9 total members) before finally disbanding in Los Angeles in 1986, when 2 of the players (Avery and Michael Farrell) were asked to join Tiffany. Several successful Scarlet reunion concerts occured in Columbus over the years. But in 2005 , Matt Avery undertook the task of producing a new cd, as well as a 1 time only show to promote the cd. The cd title Looks Like We Made It...What Happened To You? was the brainchild of Avery and original co-founder Evan Baisden. This track Hey Everybody showcases some band memebers who contributed vocally live but never sang a lead vocal part on record, as well as principal vocalists Baisden, Avery. and Dave Hill. Though the vocal passages may be short, it was important for posterity sake (in Avery's opinion) to be as all-inclusive as possible. Stay tuned for more from this cd as well as the original 2 80s Scarlet cds.

I saw Scarlet Rascal supporting Super Furry Animals in Bristol last month and was very impressed indeed. I bought their CD at the end of the show and have listened to it several times since. Pearl is the opening track.

I was hooked as soon as I heard that menacing flat 9 in the bassline so thought I'd have a go at playing it. It's a very cool bassline but hard work on the picking hand!

Credit must be given to how good the drums are on this track too - a pleasure to play bass along to and influenced by the likes of Can I dare say. For that reason I dedicate this video to Jaki Leibezeit who passed away a few days ago.

    WHO IS UFO band?

UFO are an English rock band that was formed in London in 1969. They became a transitional group between early hard rock and heavy metal and the new wave of British heavy metal. The band's current lineup includes vocalist Phil Mogg, guitarist Vinnie Moore, bass guitarist Rob De Luca, keyboardist and rhythm guitarist Paul Raymond and drummer Andy Parker. They have gone through several line-up changes, leaving Mogg as the only constant member, and had two hiatuses (1983–1984 and again from 1989 to 1991). The band are also notable for featuring former Scorpions guitarist and MSG founder Michael Schenker, who had been a member of UFO occasionally between 1973 and 2003, when Moore replaced him.

Over a career spanning 48 years, UFO have released 22 studio albums, 14 live recordings and 16 compilation albums. They achieved moderate success in the late 1970s and early 1980s with several albums and singles (including their 1979 live album Strangers in the Night) in the UK and US Top 40 charts, and have sold over ten million records worldwide.

Hold Me Now is a song by British band the Thompson Twins. Written by the band members, the song was produced by Alex Sadkin and the group's lead vocalist Tom Bailey. The song is a mid-tempo pop song that uses a varied instrumentation, including synthesizers, a xylophone, a piano and Latin percussion. It was released in November 1983 as the first single of their fifth studio album, Into the Gap.

Released in the United Kingdom in late 1983, the song peaked at number four on the UK Singles Chart in November of that year and was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) in 1983, becoming the band's biggest-selling single, and their first top five in that country. The song was released in the United States in February 1984 and became the band's highest charting single there, peaking at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in May, remaining on the chart for 21 weeks. In addition, the song topped Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play chart for one week in April 1984.

  • The Adventures - Scarlet, 1990

    1:05

The Adventures were founded in 1984 by vocalist Terry Sharpe and guitarist Pat Gribben (previously, they both played in another band, The Starjets, which disbanded in 1980).
Afterwards, they enlisted Pat Gribben's wife, Eileen (as vocalist), bass guitarist Tony Ayre (died in 2009), multi-instrumentist Gerard Spud Murphy and drummer Paul Crowder.
Along with other unofficial members, they released their first album (1985), named Theodore and Friends: it contained minor hits, such as Send My Heart (which charted very well in Italy and Germany), Feel The Raindrops and Two Rivers; this low success ended up with the deletion of their contract with Crysalis Records. This left The Adventures without a label and they eventually took a sabbatical period to think of their approach.
After three years, they were finally back with another studio album, The Sea Of Love, published by Elektra Records: this would have been their most successful album ever, containing their breakthrough hit Broken Land (you can find it on my channel), which stalled at N. 20 for several weeks in the British chart and was the most played on BBC Radio 1 that year.
Furthermore, the album contained other soulful hits, such as Heaven Knows Which Way, One Step From Heaven and Drowning In The Sea Of Love. After this medium-high success, The Adventures decided to be back within two years with another album, Trading Secrets With The Moon, deemed to be the best by their fans: it included beautiful songs, such as Scarlet, Don't Blame It On The Moon and Your Greatest Shade Of Blue. Despite the hope of repeating the previous success, this album failed to capitalize on the previous, ending their contract with Elektra. In 1993, The Adventures were back again, with another album, Lions and Tigers and Bears, encompassing hits such as Raining All Over The World, a cover of Monday Monday, Love's Lost Town and others. This time they were signed to Polydor Records, in Belfast, but this album eventually ended up their contract, too.
Thr Adventures would split up shortly after.
They got together in 2007 and 2009, in order to play a few low-key gigs in Belfast, but no further albums have been announced.
Former bass guitarist Tony Ayre died on 20th December 2009.

Space Age Love Song is a 1982 single released by the British band, A Flock of Seagulls. It was their fourth single. Lead guitarist Paul Reynolds remarked on their 1984 video album Through the Looking Glass that he thought of the song's title. He said that the band wrote and recorded it, but couldn't come up with the title. He suggested Space Age Love Song because he thought it sounded like a space age love song. His idea stuck as the song's permanent title.

  • The Scarlet Flower

    5:19

`The Scarlet Flower’ (Concertante for Flugel Horn and String Orchestra) by Nigel Clarke is written as an epitaph and memorial to the WW1 British nurse and heroine Edith Cavell, inspired by her selfless acts of humanitarianism and bravery. The work is a musical portrait of her last hours before being executed by firing squad on 12 October 1915. Sébastien Rousseau (Flugel Horn) with Longbow led by Peter Sheppard Skaerved perform this short extract.

See more Matt Avery at mattavery.com and his facebook fanpage Matt Avery! or personal page Matt Avery. Early 80s Columbus, Ohio. Original Scarlet song appeared on second album Phantasm (available on cd at mattavery.com) with Matt on lead vocal. This vid taken at Al Rosa Villa, North Columbus. That's Michael Farrell introducing the song. A new format in which the band was trying to make Evan Baisden, the lead singer, more of a being and NOT have to do between song banter so much. Just for effect. This is quintessential Scarlet. That's also Tommy Johnson on drums (though you can rarely see him), and John Belleperche on bass as well.
