I do not own this music. Everything belongs to Ryoji Ikeda and the label CCI Recordings.

This is the debut album of Ryoji Ikeda released in 1995, a mix of Ambient, Plunderphonics and Glitch Techno.

This album is divided in three parts. The first 9 tracks make up the Channel X (works from 1985-95) a dynamic and noisy sound collage of radio and classical music samples, mixed with tones and noises used by Ikeda. The 5 following tracks are the 5 Zones (1994-95; these tracks are divided but they form one big track without interruption) and finally the last 16-min long ambient track, Luxus.

    GLOBALE: Ryoji Ikeda

    micro | macro

Beginn: So, 21.06.2015 Ende: So, 09.08.2015
    Ort: ZKM_Lichthof 1 + 2

ON VIDEO AND HIGH SOUND LEVEL).

    GLOBALE: Ryoji Ikeda

    micro | macro

Begin: Sun, 21.06.2015 End: Sun, 09.08.2015
    Venue: ZKM_Atrium 1 + 2

The »Infosphere« exhibition starts with a presentation by composer and artist Ryoji Ikeda in Atrium 1 + 2 of the ZKM. His large-scale projections relating to architecture and sound worlds, are a totally immersive experience for the visitors. With »the planck universe [micro]« and »the planck universe [macro]«, the ZKM presents a series of new works, inspired by the artist’s encounters with scientists at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. CERN has the world’s largest particle physics research institute. Ikeda’s new synesthetic works are based on principles of particle physics and cosmology. Inspired by supersymmetry, they visualize a theory of particle physics – the different scales and dimensions of the universe.

Digital synesthesias of sounds and moving images
Through their spectacular presentation, Ikeda’s spatial and audiovisual installations develop a powerfully hypnotic effect, enhanced by rhythmic loops and repetitive sequences of short notes or noise. In 2012, Ryoji Ikeda shared the ZKM Giga-Hertz-Prize for Sound Art with Carsten Nicolai, for their encyclopedic investigation of the visual forms of sound. The mathematical and physical qualities of sound are presented in the book and CD-ROM »cyclo. id«. It is an atlas of over a thousand waveforms and sinus curves, which are visualized and set to music. Music becomes physics.

Ikeda’s sound art is primarily concerned with noise, with the bits and bytes of sounds. As he mainly generates his sounds from digital sources, he can convert this digital data, synesthetically or correspondingly, into acoustic and visual forms (e.g., »test pattern«, 2008). Ikeda is one of the first data artists to present the digital data flows of the infosphere both visually and acoustically, as signaled by the work titles »dataplex« (2005), »dataphonics« (2010), und »data.tron« (2010). Penetrating this world like a hacker, Ikeda makes its hidden features visible – its code – as data flows and abstract computing processes unfold and immerse the spectators.

Please note: STROBE EFFECTS ON VIDEO AND HIGH SOUND LEVEL which could possibly trigger epileptic seizures will be used in the exhibition.

    About This Release:

Ryoji Ikeda is Japan's top avant-garde minimalist electronic composer, in the tradition of Alvin Lucier (Crossings on Lovely Music)/The Hafler Trio/Bruce Gilbert/CM von Hausswolff/Panasonic...

Ikeda has an extensive music CV previous releases on compilations including Ash International's 'A Fault in the Nothing' and 'Mesmervariations.' He has also collaborated with luminaries including Derek Jarman. Andrew Lagowski, David Toop & Paul Schutze, to mention but a few. Ikeda has also had a previous album under his own name called '1000 fragments' on CCI Recordings.'

    Nostradamus7 writes:
This album is progressive beat-wise and for it's glitch contributions. Born at the time of the glitch movement, +/- offers an industrial sound with a more defined beats. While nicely layered, the sharpness of the samples make the album feel minimal. The orchestra-esque feel of the Headphonics songs layers interweave loosely only to rejoin as soon as the time is right. The melodies are simple yet unique and heavily manipulated with all the fx appropriate from those who pride themselves on the samples they create. The + - tracks are much more heavily concentrated on study and experiment and are very hypnotic.

    These Records:
A benchmark release in digital minimalism. Has to be heard, totally compulsive and immaculately constructed, pushes the envelope while keeping full control. Essential, and deceptively easy listening.

  • Ryoji Ikeda Live at FORMA Free Music Impulse #8 Udine Italy 03-11-2017

    3:49

On a warm Saturday in early June, I bicycled to the Park Avenue Armory to meet Postmichael and experience this exhibition. I had a flat tire on the way. Before we entered, we decided too wander over to Central Park and ended our visit at the Alice in Wonderful monument, with its large mushroom, and all the characters. This video is from my time, later edited, with this wonderful work by Ryoji Ikeda.

    Audiovisual installation at Kraftzentrale

Japanese artist and composer Ryoji Ikeda's new work translates the digital data that surrounds us in everyday life into flickering barcodes. We enter a gigantic landscape that consists of alternating black and white structures. The twitching currents flow by us at astonishing speed, contract and take on new forms. test pattern [100m version]—conceived especially for Duisburg's Kraftzentrale—moves in the field of tension between technological feasibility and human perception. The serial perfection of this artificially created environment presents an extreme contrast to each human motion. On a 100-meter-long projection, we are simultaneously viewer and part of the image. Combined with the rhythmic power of the soundtrack, the result is a poetic space that invites us to linger—an experience that involves all the senses.

With surgical precision, Ryoji Ikeda transforms physical phenomena and mathematical concepts into complex montages of sound and light. Working with installations, live performance, and publications, he is one of the most innovative composers and visual artists in the field of electronics. His works are primarily characterized by an equal confidence in the use of visual and acoustic media.
