  • Rowland S Howard - Shivers

    5:39

    Vale Rowland S Howard......
    24th October 1959 - 30th December 2009

    Quote from
In 1976 Howard formed the infamous Young Charlatans and wrote what is possibly Australia's most enduring cult hit Shivers. One year later, he left to join the Boys Next Door (later The Birthday Party) with Nick Cave.
Upon their arrival in London they received greater critical acclaim than any other Australian band since the Easy Beats. Sadly the band dissolved in 1983.
Since then Rowland has played with Crime & The City Solution, American agent provocateur: Lydia Lunch, a brooding French pop band called Kas Produkt, The Bad Seeds, Barry Adamson, and Primal Scream leading finally to These Immortal Souls a group designed as a vehicle for the many songs Rowland has written over the years.
Not long after his return to Melbourne in 1994, he began to perform a one man show, and in 2000 recorded his first solo album, Teenage Snuff Film.

This performance from November 1999 Australian ABC TV`s show - Studio 22.
    Interviewer Clinton Walker.
    Musicians:
Rowland S. Howard - Vocals, guitar
    Brian Hooper - Bass
    Mick Harvey - Drums!
    Edward Clayton Jones - Keyboard

The original Boys Next Door recording of the song on the 1979 album - Door,Door.

  • Rowland S. Howard - Autoluminescent

    3:27

    I am blinding
    Autoluminescent
    I am white heat
    I am heaven sent
    I was a nightmare
But I'm not gonna go there
    Again

    Into the black hole
    The house of no contest
    Make mine a meteor
    Rise me above the rest
    I'm soaring through outer space
    There is no better place
    To be

    I'm bigger than Jesus Christ
I'm greater than God in light
    I am dangerous
I cut like the sharpest knife
    I'm going nova
And I hope I can hold her
    In

    Into the darkness
    I gave away myself
    Slipped on the spiral stairs
    Tumbling down the well
I fell on a soft spot
I'm white heat, I'm white hot
    Again
    Again...

  • Rowland S. Howard - Dead Radio

    6:56

Enjoy one of rock's lesser-known Aussie legends Rowland S. Howard. This is his song Dead Radio (from his album Teenage Snuff Film) set to pictures of himself. The song at the end is a clip of Ave Maria from Rowland's latest (and probably last) album Pop Crimes.

Rowland S. Howard was (and still is) a legendary musician (and my all-time favorite). Unfortunately, he passed away December 30, 2009. This video is dedicated to him.

    3:52

If these were the last things
    That I could remember
In this the country of lost things,
Then please just five more minutes
    Fulfill my final wish...

    A kiss before dying
    Your breath upon my lips
    Black eyes move ever closer
    I hear the angels call

If these were the last things
    That I could recall
    In these the dying embers
    Of things forever lost
    Together
    Forever
    Like never before
    Perpetual spiral
    Into the endless fall

Ten years after the release of his final album, pay tribute to the legacy of visionary musician Rowland S Howard at a performance featuring former bandmates and special guests.

A vital presence on Australia’s post-punk scene, Howard created his own emotionally intense sonic language in projects including the Young Charlatans, The Birthday Party with Nick Cave, Crime & the City Solution and These Immortal Souls.

Original members of Howard’s bands and other key collaborators from throughout his 34-year career come together for an electrifying evening.

The performance features former bandmates Mick Harvey, JP Shilo, Harry Howard and Genevieve McGuckin, with Conrad Standish replacing Brian Hooper on bass. Special guests include Bobby Gillespie, HTRK’s Jonnine Standish, Lydia Lunch and more to be announced.
In 1977, at the age of 16, Howard wrote the enduring hit ‘Shivers’. By the time of his death in 2009, he had stacked up countless notable collaborations as well as two powerful solo albums and left us with a blazing legacy.

October 2019 would have marked Howard’s 60th birthday, 40 years since his musical debut and 20 years since his debut solo album Teenage Snuff Film.

In honour of these milestones, both Pop Crimes and Teenage Snuff Film are being re-released worldwide.

First performed in Melbourne in 2011, the show Pop Crimes was reprised at All Tomorrow’s Parties in 2013 and in two shows at Melbourne Festival 2014 to mark the five-year anniversary of his death.

  • Rowland S. Howard - Stupid Grin

    7:45

Marie Hoy's Stupid Grin as performed by Rowland S. Howard, 5 September 1994.

I'm gonna dance on a grave made of all of the kisses you gave me
And I'll be the nurse by the death bed of all of your promises, baby
Oh and I'll be a ghost on a dancefloor where we used to dance your way
Oh and your jokes are flat and your cheeks are thin
And your devastating smile is now just a stupid grin

At night, dear, you tremble as doubt's your companion too often
All the lies that you told and the chances you took start to plague you
Aw, lookin' for comfort ain't easy when your plan is failing fast
Honey, your jokes are flat, and your cheeks are thin
And your devastating smile is now just a stupid grin

Tell me you love me, you want me, you need me
You don't have to say it out loud
You won't see me again, except in your dreams
I hope you still love me, baby

Those eyes that you see in your dreams, take a closer look, baby
When you're weakened by loss and regret, turn around, I'll be watching
Ah, you'll never see me, but I'll never leave you alone
Aw and your jokes are flat, and your cheeks are thin
And your devastating smile is now just a stupid grin

Tell me you want me, you need me, you love me
You don't have to say it out loud
You won't see me again, except in your dreams
I hope you still love me, baby

I'm gonna dance on a grave made of all of the kisses you gave me
And I'll be the nurse by the death bed of all of your promises, baby
I'm gonna dance on the dancefloor where we used to dance your way
Aw honey, your jokes are flat, and your cheeks are thin
And your devastating smile is now just a stupid grin
