  • Roman Holliday - Dont Try To Stop It. Top Of The Pops 1983

    2:53

Nice quality video recorded live in the studio from Top Of The Pops 1983, with Jimmy Saville introducing. Roman Holliday was a 1980s British band, whose style of music was a mixture of swing and pop. They are best known in the UK for their hit single, Don't Try To Stop It, which reached number 14 in the UK Singles Chart in the summer of 1983. A follow-up, Motormania, peaked at number 40.

The band started in 1980, composed of Bonhomme, Lambert, Cohen and Noone - who left the band shortly thereafter. In 1984 both brass men, Rob Lambert and John Eacott also left the band.

In the United States the group achieved exposure through MTV, which aired their Stand By video. The single went to number one on the Canadian Adult Contemporary chart in November 1983. Roman Holliday also charted in Japan on the international, as well as the domestic market, with Hear It in The Night; and the Robert John Mutt Lange written and produced track, One Foot Back in Your Door. Both singles went Top 10.

Bonhomme is currently employed at Youngstown State University. He is a professor of Russian history, and teaches a number of courses in modern European history and environmental history.

Oh boy, this one is HARD to find nowadays!
Roman Holliday were a 1980s group that played infectious music that was a kind of hybred of Big Band &
Rockabilly, and are best remembered for this hit: Stand By.

They received heavy rotation on Mtv in the 1980s
but sadly still fell into obscurity.
What a shame, as I saw them perform live over 20
years ago at The Hollywood Palladium and they
were a TERRIFC band, great showmen!

Off the album New Junk Aesthetic.

We cut our teeth in the bedroom.
We slit our wrists in our costumes.
All of them, witches, witches, witches, witches!

We are the death of the party.
We are the life of the funeral.
All of us, ragmen, ragmen, ragmen, ragmen!

    I want the ripened fruit.
    I want the fresh meat.
    I want the first born.
    I want the down beat.

We traded vows on the front line.
They ushered us through the stop sign.
All of them witches, witches, witches, witches!

We found our way in the blackout.
We are the ghosts in the lighthouse.
All of us, ragmen, ragmen, ragmen, ragmen!

    I want the open wound.
    I want the dark street.
    I want the virgin blood.
    I want that wet heat.

  • Roman Holliday - One Foot Back In Your Door

    4:21

Some bands fall into a sophomore slump on their second album by trying to exactly re-create the first one. Roman Holliday really didn't want that to happen, so they went as far as they could in the opposite direction of their debut! And as the calling card, the Side One, Track One song selection, they worked with Robert John Mutt Lange - who had scored big hits producing AD/DC's Back in Black, Foreignor's Four, The Cars' Heartbeat City, and Def Leppard's Pyromania in recent years.

This song was written and produced by Mr. Lange, and it has all of his signature sounds, including the bigger-than-big background vocal sound that I came to call the Mutt Lange Singers in later years. There's even a line leading in to the chorus that got recycled a few years later and finally found the pop chart glory it deserved!

The rest of the album was NOT produced by Mutt Lange, but stuck with a similar overall sound. Here is the one collaboration between the former retro swing band, and the hot rock producer with the midas touch!

With their jazzy brand of swing pop and trademark sailor hats Roman Holliday burst onto the British music scene in 1982. Championed early on by cult DJ John Peel, the seven piece band took the pop world by storm with their catchy, humorous songs and trademark vocal harmonies and brass riffs.

They soon became established as one of the most exciting live acts on the UK scene and exported their live show across the world to Europe, the USA and Japan where they were particularly popular. They were one of the earliest bands to be heavily featured on the new music video channel MTV in the USA where their madcap energetic videos gained a huge following.

Roman Holliday's three hits were: Stand By Motormania and Don't Try To Stop It which still gets regular airplay from Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans.

Back on the road in 2014 the band features original members bassist Jon Durno, drummer Simon Cohen and keyboard player Adrian York alongside new member Steve Laney on voice and guitar as well as an amazing hard-swinging 3 piece brass section. Playing a mix of their hits, some originals and covers from the 1940s and 1980s Roman Holliday are ideal for festivals, club dates, retro and 1980s events, college balls and corporate events.
