    Roland TR-707 & TB-303 Walkthrough

    18:30

One final tutorial to round out this batch before I take a break. This time we're having a look at two classics; the Roland TR-707 and the Roland TB-303. This video gives you the basic principles to get started.

Along with the TR-727, TR-909, TR-808, SH-101 and MC-202, these machines played an integral part in dance music that emerged in the late 80s, most notably Acid and Techno.

    Some references:

    Phuture Acid Trax from 1987:

Armando Land of Confusion from 1988:

Download samples from my TR-707 for free:

There's also a great (and free) html emulation of the TR-303 if you can't access an original unit or clone:

Roland TR-707: Going Back In Time With Bill Holland

    6:38

Digging up a relic of yester-score, Bill Holland takes a look at the Roland TR-707, which is finally stepping out of the shadow of the Roland TR-909 for throwback eight and six bit drum samples, which are all the rage these days.

See the TR-707 at its campiest, complete with more cowbell and even more tambo. It'll be like that time Ben Stiller seized all my candy when I was a kid.

    KiNK with 707

    6:29

here I`m playing around with a Roland t.r. 707 drum machine and more specifically the Tap Write function on the sequencer (a feature, which I discovered just recently). The sound is recorded through FMR RNLA and Mackie mixing desk. As the original session was too long for a simple drum track, I chopped off three short segments of it.

    Midi-syncing a Roland TR-707 with a TB-3

    6:29

A short demo of how to sync a Roland TR-707 drum machine with a Roland TR-3 bassline synth through a midi connection.

This is not meant to be a demo of the features of either the TB-3 or the TR-707 - I am new to both machines and have a lot to learn before I can show-them off. It is just meant to show how to connect and sync the two machines. I neglected to adjust the tempo on the TB-3 in the video but I did try it beforehand and the TR-707 matched the tempo of the TB-3 with no issues.

I didn't change patterns on the TB-3 or the TR-707, I just tweaked some of the effects on the TB-3 (cut-off, resonance, tone accent, envelope, delay-effect...) and used the Scatter effect (SC4). I changed the bass sound on the TB-3 part-way through the video and transposed the key of the pattern a couple of times.

I used tone B46 and B51 in the video.

The tones were recorded on two separate mono tracks and then panned slightly apart because I only have two mono inputs on my soundcard. I added some reverb to the tracks afterwards with the PerfectSpace plugin in SONAR.

(Sorry, the autofocus wasn't working well on my camera for the close-up bits at the beginning.)

    Daft Punk Synth Tutorial

    16:28

This week I thought I'd demo three Daft Punk synth sounds / samples on original hardware.

As these are all VCO-based analogue synths that are the best part of 40 years old, you'll probably find that settings vary slightly from one unit to the next. In fact, the settings vary on a daily basis on my own synths, depending upon temperature or how long they've been switched on etc.

    Here's the settings.

    Korg MS-20 (Mark I):

KYBD CV OUT patched into VOLTAGE CONTROLLED HP FILTER CUTOFF FREQ

SIGNAL OUT patched into EXTERNAL SIGNAL PROCESSOR SIGNAL IN. Output from AMP OUT.

    Signal level 8.8

    OSC 1: Sawtooth at 8'
    OSC 2: Sawtooth at 16' tuned up a 5th

HP filter: Cutoff 3, Peak 0, MG 0, EXT 10
    LP filter: Cutoff 3.1, Peak 7.8, MG 0, EG2 7.8

    EG2:
    Hold 0
    Attack 1
    Decay 5.2
    Sustain 0.2
    Release 4

    Roland TB-303:

    G down
    A# up
    G slide
    F up
    D# accent + slide
    C# down + accent
    C# down + accent + slide
    C# accent
    D# up + slide
    D# down
    F up + slide
    G up + accent + slide
    G# down
    G down + slide
    C down + slide
    G slide

Distort with a stomp box or unit of your choice and dial in the cutoff and envelope with resonance all the way up. Tweak decay and accent. I was using the square wave setting.

    Sequential Circuits Pro~One:

This is matching the quite tame sync preset from the Prophet 5, you can get lots of variations of the sync sound, including more aggressive versions.

Oscillator A: Octave 1, square, 50% PW, Sync On.
Oscillator B: Octave 1, no waves, Normal, KYBD

    Oscillator A level: 10
Oscillator B level: n/a as we've no waves
    Noise: 0

    Filter:
    Cutoff 2
    Resonance 0
    Envelope amount 6
    Keyboard Amount 4
    Attack 4
    Decay 7
    Sustain 3
    Release 3

    Amp:
    Attack 2
    Decay 5
    Sustain 10
    Release 0

    Mod matrix:
Filter envelope direct to Oscillator A freq. Amount 10.

    LFO frequency 6.5, shape triangle
LFO wheel to Oscillator B freq. Amount 1.5. Dial up mod wheel.

    Alternatives to these synths:

    Korg MS-20:

    TB-303:

    Pro~One:

There's a Behringer clone coming, but in the meantime there's these emulations. I have Repro-5 / Repro-1 and it's remarkably similar to the real thing.

    Phuture - Acid Trax

    12:49

Acid Tracks is a 12-inch single released in 1987 by Phuture. It's considered the first song made using the Roland TB-303 synthesizer to create the acid house squelch sound. The 303 was originally designed as a bass accompaniment for bands, but ended up as a favorite among electronic-music producers. The style with which this song became associated became known as acid house.

This is basically me playing around with the famous acid pattern from Acid Trax (cks) by Phuture. Totally improvised and not at all meant to be a cover-version.
Just a little jam with my vintage boxes (or too long..depending on your point of view regarding acid..hehe)

Hope you like it and check out my other acid-jams!

Roland TB 303 VS Cloud Roland TB 303

    4:45

I own two TB 303s. Though their character is so similar they do sound slightly different. For this test I wanted to use the deeper more mellow 303, but the accent knob is broken. This means I comparing this to what I call the screamer 303. The Resonance is really cranked up on this on.

I know the plug-in is never going to sound 100% the same. That would be impossible, but I was quite amazed how close the cloud 303 sounded. Much better than the TB3 and TB 03, which also suffered from a dodgy accent feature. The accent knob on the original is so important and helps create bouncy baselines. It was good to hear Roland finally got this sorted. I also notice the accent on the cloud TB 303 could be more aggressive than the original.

Overall I am impressed. Would I get one? No, because I'm not interested in a subscription. If they sell it as a paid plug-in I would buy it.

excited about the sbx-1 because... shuffle. finally a solid way to add some swing the 303!

    - sbx-1 slave to mutable instruments yarns
    - 303 is multi-d into make noise erbe-verb & echophon
    - self playing kick drum: circadian rhythms, erica seq switch. turns out CI can randomly walk thru patterns with the latest mode d update, so.. erica seq switch isn't really needed in this patch

Picked up a 303 and so had to try these two famous riffs together.

It's not 100% perfect, but pretty close. Once I've nailed it exactly I'll possibly make a video tutorial on how to do those sounds.

Drums - Sequential Drumtraks sequenced by the BeatStep Pro via its midi-in.

Squelchy sequence - Roland TB-303 running into an Ibanez Tubescreamer.

Riff - Korg MS20 mark I (with the type-35 filter) run back through its own external signal processor and with the keyboard voltage tracking the filter cut offs. The distortion is entirely from the synth, there's no extra processing.

Also put in the bass quarter notes after the fact on a Fender Jazz bass.

303 DAY: DJ Pierre and the Roland TB-303

    3:04

Today on #303DAY, we celebrate the iconic silver box that defined the genre of acid house—the Roland TB-303 Bassline Synthesizer. With an unmistakable sonic signature brimming with warmth, energy and character, the iconic silver box defined the acid house movement of the late 1980s.

Widely misunderstood when launched in 1981, the true revolution began several years later when electronic music producers rediscovered the quirky box, unleashing the hypnotic, liquid sound that captivated a generation. While we may never really understand why the 303 sound makes people want to dance, there is no denying its power, influence, and unwavering ability to get a party started. It just works, even after all this time.

In this video, we speak to Roland Lifetime Achievement Award winner DJ Pierre, whom as part of the group Phuture, defined the sound that gave birth to a genre of music that continues to evolve to this day. DJ Pierre shares his story on the TB-303 and how 'that' sound originated.
