Another great long lost video. I had another version of this but, since it ws recorded in 1986 it was a crappy copy. THIS version came off the original master tape that I found and it's one of my treasured interviews.

Robert told me he learned guitar from the great legendeary Robert Johnson himself, who he also said was his stepfater. I don't have any coroberation for this, but Robert said that his mother had been seeing Johnson - a known womaniser - in Lockwood's young life. Either way, whether they were actually 'related' or not, Lockwood became a legend in his own right, moving to Cleveland in the early 1960s from Chicago, where his previous base of operations was as he was one of the primary performers on the original King Biscuit Hour. He also told me at one time that he was mentor to the legendary BB Kind and they had become great friends over time.

Not only did Lockwood give a brilliant and historic interview, but he played two exclusive songs for us as well. This video was shot in the Cablevision studios and my only regret is that, at the time, I didn't know as much about the history of blues music as I do now. Fortunatety, Lockwood wanted to talk and he gave a full accountinhg of the early history of blues music and his place in this truly American music.

    It was recorded in 1986.

From the legendary Candid Records album Otis Spann is the Blues. Recorded in the winter of 1960, this was the first album Otis Spann made in his tragically short life. Also on the date was Robert Lockwood, Jr., the step-son of one of the most extraordinary blues singers who ever recorded, the late Robert Johnson. Like his step-father, Robert Lockwood, Jr., also sings with biting, coruscating passion.
