Playing For Change is a movement created to inspire and connect the world through music, born from the shared belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. Our primary focus is to record and film musicians performing in their natural environments and combine their talents and cultural power in innovative videos we call Songs Around the World. Creating these videos motivated us to form the Playing For Change Band—a tangible, traveling representation of our mission, featuring musicians met along our journey; and establish the Playing For Change Foundation—a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to building music and art schools for children around the world. Through these efforts, we aim to create hope and inspiration for the future of our planet. Learn more:

  • The Robbie Robertson Last Waltz Stratocaster | Fender

    9:01

Who would have thought that a guitar preserved in actual bronze would still be playable, let alone iconic? But that’s exactly what happened with Robbie Robertson’s 1954 Stratocaster, an instrument that gained worldwide notoriety when it was featured in the 1978 Martin Scorcese concert film The Last Waltz.

Since the film's release almost 40 years ago, the guitar has achieved legendary status within the guitar community. Watch as the man himself explains the thought process behind the original design to Fender Master Builder Todd Krause

  • Robbie Robertson Broken Arrow

    5:30

Broken Arrow is a track from Robbie Robertson's 1987 self-titled album. The album won the Juno Award for Album of the Year, and producers Daniel Lanois and Robertson won the Producer of the Year Juno award, both in 1989 as there were no Juno Awards held in 1988.

Who else is gonna bring you
    A broken arrow
Who else is gonna bring you
    A bottle of rain
There he goes, moving across the water
There he goes turning my whole
    world around

Do you feel what I feel
Can we make that so it's part of the deal
I gotta hold you in these arms of steel
Lay your heart on the line ... this time

I wanna breathe when you breathe
When you whisper like that hot
    summer breeze
Count the beads of sweat that cover me
Didn't you show me a sign, this time

Who else is gonna bring you
    A broken arrow
Who else is gonna bring you
    A bottle of rain
There he goes, moving across the water
There he goes turning my whole
    world around

Can you see what I see
Can you cut behind the mystery
I will meet you by the witness tree
    Leave the whole world behind

I want to come when you call
I'll get to you if I have to crawl
They can't hold me with these iron walls
    We've got mountains to climb

Who else is gonna bring you
    A broken arrow
Who else is gonna bring you
    A bottle of rain
There he goes, moving across the water
There he goes turning my whole
    world around

  • Bob Dylan Jamming With Robbie Robertson RARE FULL SESSION

    17:25

    SETLIST AND INFO BELOW

This is a request, and a great request it is! There's probably no other tape out there with such an insight into how Dylan collaborated with other musicians. In this recording, we hear Dylan teaching and working with Robbie Robertson as they both try to iron out a few new songs (none were ever released, but they are all spellbinding nonetheless). This is the entire session that was recorded at the North British Station Hotel in Glasgow, Scotland on May 13, 1966. It's astonishing how beautifully tender Dylan's voice is here, almost like a choir boy. If any are interested, I have great footage of the last song:

    5:09

    Lyrics:
    Crow has brought the message
to the children of the sun
for the return of the buffalo
and for a better day to come

    You can kill my body
    You can damn my soul
for not believing in your god
    and some world down below

    You don't stand a chance
    against my prayers
    You don't stand a chance
    against my love
    They outlawed the Ghost Dance
    but we shall live again,
    we shall live again

    My sister above
    She has red paint
    She died at Wounded Knee
    like a later day saint

You got the big drum in the distance
    blackbird in the sky
That's the sound that you hear
    when the buffalo cry

    You don't stand a chance
    against my prayers
    You don't stand a chance
    against my love
    They outlawed the Ghost Dance
    but we shall live again,
    we shall live again

    Crazy Horse was a mystic
He knew the secret of the trance
And Sitting Bull the great apostle
    of the Ghost Dance

    Come on Comanche
    Come on Blackfoot
    Come on Shoshone
    Come on Cheyenne

    We shall live again

    Come on Arapaho
    Come on Cherokee
    Come on Paiute
    Come on Sioux

    We shall live again

  • Robbie Robertson Found Peace with Fellow Band Member Levon Helm

    2:58

Robbie Robertson's Found Resolution with Fellow Band Member Levon Helm
They say if you can't resolve issues with an other person eventually you have to do it withing yourself. You don't have to have a former band-mate with hatred towards you to understand the conflict between Robertson and Helm. Just think of any ex lover, for instance, that will never forgive you for whatever you did. I'm not saying Robertson ever really tried to mend fences with Helm but the guitarist visited his old drummer near his death.

CBS Sunday Morning featured an interview with Robertson while promoting his new autobiography 'Testimony.' Interestingly the guitarist was having trouble remembering the chords to 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.' saying, “Yeah, I barely remember it. I haven’t played it since ‘The Last Waltz,’”

The first run of The Band with all it's core member ran from 1968 until 1977. Splitting up the band was tough on some members especially Helm. Who said, “That don’t make sense, have a big ‘goin’ outta business’ concert.” when talking of 'The Last Waltz.' A few years before his death Helm looked back at that famous swan song concert as Robertson’s attempt to celebrate himself. Reporter Anthony Mason finally asked if their rift would ever heal to which Helm answered, “I doubt it. Not as long as he wants to claim everything that The Band ever made, you know?”

Fast forward to today Mason asked if they ever mended fences? Robertson said, “As much as I loved him and admired his extraordinary musical talent, I could not do the bitterness anymore. But when they called me and said, ‘He’s in the hospital, and he’s dying,’ I went right to the hospital, and I sat with him, and I held his hand. I sat there and thought about a lot of the beautiful things that we have been through together. And I was happy for that moment to kind of wash away any dark clouds.”

Robertson reunited with original members Rick Danko and Garth Hudson in 1989 when The Band was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame

In 1994 the three again appeared together for The Band's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Helm did not attend. The drummer was still at odds with Robertson for years over accusations of stolen songwriting credits.

Levon Helm died of cancer on April 19, 2012. He was 71, At 55 Rick Danko passed of heart failure in his sleep on December 10, 1999. Richard Manuel committed suicide after performing with the reformed Band on March 4, 1986. He was only 42. Garth Hudson is now 79 and Robbie Robertson is 73. - by John Beaudin

John Beaudin has been in major market radio (Edmonton, Vancouver & Calgary) for 33 years and a music journalist since 1989. He graduated from Broadcasting school as a news man so he would have the skills to write about the artists that inspired him since he bought his first album, “Madman Across The Water” by Elton John as a teen. In the 80's Beaudin was the host of the syndicated radio show “The Cross Canada Report” which had two version (Rock and A/C). Beaudin was also asked to be a judge at the Juno Awards (Canada's answer to the Grammys) Twice. He has anchored every position in radio including morning and afternoon drive and was a Program and Music Director for The Breeze and California 103 in Calgary. He currently hosts the popular Lovesongs at QM-FM in Vancouver.

Well, this was a lot of work! But, it was also a lot of fun to do. A drum cover of a great Robbie Robertson song featuring the absolute genius drums of Manu Katche. Over 25 years ago, I first became aware of this song and had my little drumming mind blown wide apart. I never thought in a million years I would ever attempt to learn and play the whole thing --- it's so busy and constantly changing! Well, I was wrong. I decided to see if I could learn it and play it. I did my best with it, and I hope you like watching it!
