  • Recording Live to Vinyl with F. Reid Shippen & Pete Lyman - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    Check out Reid's course here:-

While we were in Nashville recently, we had the pleasure of capturing F. Reid Shippen and Pete Lyman recording live to disc. The artist literally was playing in the other room, while Reid mixed the track and it was sent straight to the lathe! Everything is done in one shot!

The session was recorded on Pete's 1956 Neumann AM-32B cutting lathe. This lathe was originally purchased in 1956 by RCA Records in New York City and was operated by his mentor Richard Simpson. When Simpson relocated to Los Angeles in the 1980's, the lathe was moved with him. Around the year 2000, Pete was trained on that same lathe, and Richard Simpson gave it to him. In 2016, Pete did a full mechanical and electronic restoration and upgrade on the lathe. So, while his 1956 Neumann AM-32B cutting lathe may look old, it actually has the most modern control system available and performs better than even the most modern lathe.

  • Woodworm Studios Tour around a residential recording studio with owner / engineer Stuart Jones

    4:33

Owner and recording engineer Stuart Jones takes us on a video tour around his residential recording studio in rural Oxfordshire, UK. Having had Radiohead, Fairport Convention, Tony Iomi and other top artists, it's a great place to go to record and track as a band. The studio has a lovely recording space with additional booths, SSL Duality console, PMC MB2 speakers and lots of great mics and instruments to work with.

The studio has a double/tripple height live room that hosts a Yamaha baby grand piano, vintage Hammond A100 organ and Leslie, literally stacks of Marshall and other guitar cabs, Gretsch Catalina Birch Drum Kit and tons of other instruments.

There are two overdub booths leading off the live room with one these being super - very dead, ideal for guitar cabs, voice over etc. The second booth is large enough to comfortably accommodate a miked drum kit, for a tighter sound compared to the main live room and this booth has sliding glass doors allowing good line of sight when tracking.

The range of mics available are excellent and include:

    Flea 47
    Neumann U87 Stereo Set
    Royer 121 Ribbon
    Coles 4038 Matched Pair
    AKG C414B-XLII Matched Pair
    AKG C451B x2
    AKG D112
    Sennheiser MD421 x3
    Rodes NT2 x2
    Sennheiser E904 x6

    Shure SM7B
    Shure SM 58 x2
    Shure SM 57 x3
    Shure Beta 52A
    Yamaha SubKick

The studio being residential can sleep 5 band members plus a producer but if more accommodation is needed there are many local places to stay.

  • Dave Pensado Interview & Fab Factory Studio Tour - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    2:12:03

This week we had the opportunity to tour the Fab Factory Recording Studio and speak with each of the fantastic engineers working there--including the wonderful Dave Pensado!

The Fab Factory is a 4-room, 3-booth studio owned by Shaun Fabos. Right away, clients and visitors (like ourselves!) are struck by the vibe of the space. Art covers the walls of the reception and lounge areas, and the studio actually doubles as a gallery exhibiting twice yearly. Shaun ensures that the Fab Factory feels creative at all times, allowing artists to do their best work in a comfortable space.

Each of the 4 rooms are designed for mixing, while 2 operate more as production suites. Jason LaRocca--an engineer, producer, and scoring mixer--first gave us a rundown of his setup. Jason runs Pro Tools with an Avid S3 controller, while a rack-mounted QSC unit provides 64 channels of I/O, onboard EQ and compression, and much of what of a traditional console offers. Because Jason's work involves mixing in 5.1/7.1 surround as well as stereo, the QSC functions similarly to the master section on a board, allowing him to swap speaker configurations as needed. He also has a nice collection of modular synthesizers in an A-100 rack, which he jokingly told us he plays with when Pro Tools crashes.

    Interviews:
    Shaun Fabos 0:49
    Jason LaRocca 5:25
    Michele Canova Iorfida 28:37
    Dave Pensado 50:40

Of course, we also visited Dave Pensado in his Fab Factory home. Dave and I have been friends for many years now and had a lovely conversation about current and past projects, the state of rock music today, some of the equipment/techniques he uses, and much more! Dave mixes almost exclusively in-the-box, but he also has a selection of outboard gear that suits his style. A clever piece is the Bettermaker EQ 232 that opens as a plug-in controlled via the physical unit. Interestingly enough, Dave is also a fan of IK Multimedia's compact iLoud monitors which I use all the time!

Prior to Fab Factory, Dave worked out of Larrabee Studios in Los Angeles where he mixed on an SSL. It was around 2010 that he discovered he was doing better mixes in-the-box than on a console, and by Pro Tools 11, he couldn't beat what he was doing with a DAW. Of course, Dave champions whatever method best enhances the individual engineer's creativity, and speaks about the importance of being receptive to new techniques. This might include, for example, using certain plug-ins that allow panning of specific frequencies--a helpful hint he gave us for keeping mixes interesting!

As always, we hope you enjoy this look into Fab Factory Recording Studios and conversation with Dave Pensado.

I had the opportunity to speak with Pete and Dave and tour Infrasonic East after they hosted a post-NAMM party at their studio the night before. I rather selfishly “DJ-ed” some of my favorite records through their system for part of the night and realized just how beautiful their room sounds!

Infrasonic Sound is a mastering studio owned by Pete Lyman and operated by himself and fellow engineer Dave Gardner. The studio first opened its doors in Los Angeles 14 years ago and has recently expanded to a second location in Nashville, where we met with them.

Infrasonic specializes in audio and vinyl mastering. Over the years, Pete has worked with a variety of artists, including Jason Isbell, Weezer, Panic! at the Disco, and Chris Stapleton. The latter’s 2016 release, Traveller, won a Grammy for Best Country Album. Pete also mixed and mastered Jason Isbell’s 2015 record, Something More Than Free, which went on to win a Grammy for Best Americana Album.

My friend and legendary producer Shelly Yakus recently hit me up and told me: 'Hey Warren, for your next studio tour, you need to check out Clay Blair's studio 'Boulevard Recording'.

And I'm so glad I did!

Formerly named 'Producer's Workshop', this studio has a lot of history: Pink Floyd's masterpiece 'The Wall' was overdubbed, mixed and mastered at this studio, Steely Dan tracked their last two records 'Aja' and 'Gaucho' there, they had legendary artists like Ringo Starr, Alice Cooper, Ray Charles, Neil Diamond, Blink 182, as well as all former Beatles members.

Pink Floyd producer Bob Ezrin described this studio as “acoustically perfect“ and “one of the greatest recording rooms ever built“.

In this video, Clay tells us how 'The Wall' was recorded and mixed, and gives us a complete tour of the studio, including the live room where they tracked 'The Wall'.

I have to admit: I felt a bit like a kid in a candy store! Every great vintage hardware unit which plugin designers like to model: Clay has the original one. Plus a huge collection of guitars, pedals, amps, vintage organs (used on Beatles records) and microphones!

You'll get to see a beautiful studio, get tons of great tips on how to put your favourite plugin emulations to use, and learn a lot about music history, I hope you enjoy it!

Thank you so much for having us Clay, it was a blast!

    Many Thanks,

    Warren

When the world is breaking down around you taking everything that you know
    What you didn't know
Is that we can go forever if we want to
We can live inside of a moment
    The one that we own

You and me we got this
You and me we’re beautiful beautiful

We all we all we’re gonna be alright
We got we got we always got the fight in us
We all we all we’re gonna live tonight
Like there's no tomorrow 'cause we’re the afterlife

Living like you're dying isn't living at all
Give me your cold hands put them on my heart
Raise a glass to everyone who thinks they'll never make it through this life
    To live a brand-new start

You and me we got this
You and me we’re beautiful beautiful

    Chorus

Every time I close my eyes I hear your favorite song telling me not to run not to worry anymore
I can hold on tight to nothing better than the rest
So it's now or never more

    Chorus

  • Studio Tour and Interview with Matt Linny Linesch - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    36:44

Matt (Linny) Linesch is a producer & the owner of Infinitespin Recorders in Los Angeles.
Read more about Matt Linesch here:

The studio has a rich history, having been most recently owned by Toto drummer Simon Phillips. It was also once operated by Sheila E., during which time her father painted a mural in the live room that’s still there today.

Matt took over the space in May 2017, making it a warm, comfortable environment for artists to be creatively free–a concept that’s paramount to Matt’s overall approach to working with musicians.

Still working on a mostly analogue set-up, the centerpiece of Infinitespin Recorders is Matt’s 40-channel API console. Built in 1972, the desk changed hands several times, once living at Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco. Over the years it found its way to a home studio in Los Angeles, where a crane was eventually used to remove it from the house! Matt shared a photo of the 1300-pound console being hoisted into the air, which you can see in the video below. It should come as no surprise, then, that it was quite a feat moving the beast into Matt’s studio as well!

In addition to the API, Matt uses a 16-channel Neve sidecar, a Studer A827 tape machine, and an array of outboard gear. We took a look at one of his more recent acquisitions: a UTA Unfairchild compressor that he’s demoing, which was also featured in our recent Eric Valentine interview. He uses a variety of Manley equipment as well, including a Massive Passive stereo EQ which is great for adding a “tube-like” sound to the mix buss.

For a more in-depth look at the space and the gear, please enjoy this interview and studio tour with Matt Linesch of Infinitespin Recorders.
