  • Rainbow Girls - Down Home Girl

    3:58

Down Home Girl is one of the cover songs off the new Rainbow Girls cover abum, Give The People What They Want, released feb. 22, 2019.

Listen to the whole cover album here:

    ________________________

This song has been a long time coming for us rainbows. Originally recorded by Alvin Robinson in 1964 and covered by The Rolling Stones in 1965, Down Home Girl first made its way to our awareness via Old Crow Medicine Show's 2006 version. But every version of this song seems to be prime - it's just that good.

We learned the song and made this video in the same afternoon, sitting on our back porch in the countryside north of San Francisco. (Tractor cameo by our dear friend, Steve Shoulders.)

  • Rainbow Girls - Something Ive Been Meaning to Say - Westy Sessions

    3:38

This Westy Session features the Rainbow Girls performing “Something I’ve Been Meaning to Say” alongside a 1981 Vanagon Westfalia that has been converted into a chicken coop.

Rainbow Girls are a unique trio of talent: Vanessa May, Erin Chapin, and Caitlin Gowdey. They combine heart-wrenching harmonies, emotive guitar work, and poignant lyrical content into an unusually beautiful sonic tapestry. Hailing from the golden countryside just north of California’s Bay Area, their music delves deeply into themes of the human experience: hopeful love, honest self-reflection, and pursuits of social justice.

Their latest album, Give the People What They Want, crystallizes these ideas in acoustic amber, encapsulating a beautiful new direction for their evolving sound.

    LYRICS:

    What makes a man?
Is it that he’s keener than I am?
    A mover and a shaker
    A mad money maker
    What makes a man?

    What makes a man?
Is it that he’s faster than I am?
    Always there before me
    Pushing on the ceiling
Aw come on just break it man

    What makes a man?
Is it that he's righter than I am?
    Bonafide proud boy
Kickin up a cloud of noise
    I can’t see you man

    What makes a man?
Is it that he’s harder than I am?
    Pissin on his enemies
    Even when they can’t breath
Aw come on just quit it man

    They say get in line
Get in line and stay in line
    Get in line
Get in line and stay in line

    _________________________________________

'American Dream' was one of those songs that spilled out pretty fast. I was messing around with a new fingerpicking progression and just kept muttering phrases to myself that had been marinating. It's a song to bring up the dissonance between the Dream this country has been selling for decades and all the folks trapped under the weight of money who aren't able to access it due to oppressive systems of power. People who are told their lives aren't worth anything through the actions of government, police, and inaction of the justice system. Other's experiences are not my stories to tell, but the desire for security, love, family, the money-related fear, grief, and hope for eventual happiness can be shared by everyone on some level. - Caitlin Gowdey

  • Rainbow Girls - One Fine Day

    2:06

Made this video back in July of 2017. We spent the preceding winter at our house recording and mixing our album American Dream. Anyone who's ever produced an album knows just how big of a project that can be. When we finally sent the masters off to the CD company, we felt like finals were over and it was summer vacation! Luckily for us, we were in southern California. We tried to make it to Mexico on our day off, but the traffic was too intense, so we stopped in San Diego and ran around at the beach all afternoon.

We had just started learning this Carole King song in the van and though we tried finding joy in playing literally ANY OTHER SONG that day, we just kept coming back to this one. Made a little video of it for yall with all the lyric flubs and harmony mistakes. Things cant always be perfect, but hey. This is us at our happiest. Hope this brightens your day.

    __________________________________________

“The news is something we all keep a pretty close eye on, despite how hard it can be to stomach. One song in particular (‘Cameron Sterling’) was actually directly inspired by listening to and coping with the news. We were in the van last July, listening to Democracy Now!’s report about the killing of Alton Sterling by Baton Rouge police. This news source is one we all value and respect greatly, but I couldn’t really take in anything anyone was saying once they played a sound clip of Alton Sterling’s wife addressing the public/media for the first time. And then I really couldn’t even hear what she was saying either, for the pain and grief of their 15 year old son, Cameron, crying beside her, struck me so hard I don’t think I’ll ever be able to get it out of my head.
There is so much information coming at us all the time and I think a lot of people become jaded or numb to hearing the reality of what’s going on, but the terrible things you read/hear about have real consequences for real people. This 15 year old kid is never going to see his father again; his world is changed forever - and that’s just one person! It’s so easy to remain in your own little bubble, wag your finger at politics, and shrug your shoulders at the people who continue to destroy the world, but it is incredibly powerful to take charge and unwaveringly stand up for what you believe in.” -Erin Chapin
