Raina Kabaivanska (Bulgarian: Райна Кабаиванска) (December 15, 1934) is a Bulgarian opera singer, one of the leading lyrico-spinto sopranos of her generation, particularly associated with Verdi and Puccini, although she sang a wide range of roles. Born Raina Jakimowa in Burgas, Bulgaria, she studied in Sofia with Prokopowa and Jossifow, and made her debut at the Bulgarian National Opera in Sofia as Tatjana in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin in 1957. The following year, she left for Italy for further studies with Zina Fumagalli-Riva in Milan and with Giulia Tess in Vercelli. Two years later she made a breakthrough in Fano, Italy, as Nedda in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci. In 1961, she gave her first performance at La Scala in Milan, as Agnese in Bellini's Beatrice di Tenda, opposite Dame Joan Sutherland. She sang widely in Italy, Genoa, Venice, Parma and notably in Turin in 1973, as Elena in I vespri siciliani, in the only production ever directed by Maria Callas. In 1962, she made her debuts at both the Royal Opera House in London, as Desdemona in Verdi's Otello, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York, as Nedda. She went on performing at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the Paris Opéra, the Vienna State Opera, the Budapest Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the San Francisco Opera, the Dallas Opera, the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, etc. She also appeared in a few opera films, notably Pagliacci, opposite Jon Vickers in 1968, Il trovatore, opposite Franco Bonisolli, in 1975, and Tosca, opposite Plácido Domingo, in 1976. A versatile singer with a beautiful voice and fine musicianship, she is also a singing-actress of considerable ability...

    Lyrics & English Translation

    VIOLETTA
How strange it is ... how strange!
Those words are carved upon my heart!
Would a true love bring me misfortune?
What do you think, o my troubled spirit?
No man before kindled a flame like this.
    Oh, joy ...
    I never knew ...
To love and to be loved!
    Can I disdain this
For a life of sterile pleasure?

Was this the man my heart,
    Alone in the crowd,
    Delighted many times to paint
    In vague, mysterious colours?
This man, so watchful yet retiring,
    Who haunted my sickbed
    And turned my fever
Into the burning flame of love!
    That love,
The pulse of the whole world,
    Mysterious, unattainable,
The torment and delight of my heart.

    It's madness! It's empty delirium!
    A poor, lonely woman
    Abandoned in this teeming desert
    They call Paris!
What can I hope? What should I do?
Enjoy myself! Plunge into the vortex
    Of pleasure and drown there!
    Enjoy myself!

Free and aimless I must flutter
    From pleasure to pleasure,
    Skimming the surface
    Of life's primrose path.
    As each day dawns,
    As each day dies,
Gaily I turn to the new delights
    That make my spirit soar.

    ALFREDO
    (outside the window)
    Love is the pulse

    VIOLETTA
    Oh!

    ALFREDO
... of the whole world ...

    VIOLETTA
    Yes! Love!

    ALFREDO
    Mysterious, unattainable,
The torment and delight of my heart.

    VIOLETTA
    It's madness!
    Pleasure!
Free and aimless, I must flutter ... etc.

    Lyrics & English Translation

    Afraid of me?
    You had better be sure!
    Ready is my defence.
His eyes are attracted by a stone
she wears on her right hand.
    Wrapped in the dark
    night, I am near you,
    and you don't know it...
    Wailing wind,
carry to him, mercifully, my sighs...

On the rosy wings of love,
    go, pained sighs:
go to alleviate the sick mind
of the wretch that lies imprisoned...
    Like a breeze of hope
    linger in that room:
    wake him up to remembrance,
    to dreams of love!
    Yet do not imprudently
reveal the woes of my heart!

    Lyrics & English Translation

    Peace, peace, my God!
    Cruel misfortune, alas, constrains me to languish;
Deep as on the first day, for so many years
    My suffering has endured.
    Peace, peace, my God!
I loved him, it's true! But God adorned him so much
    With beauty and courage,
That I still love him, nor will I be able to remove
    His image from my heart.
    Fate! Fate! Fate!
A crime has separated us in this world!
Alvaro, I love you, and it is written above in heaven:
I will never see you again!
    O God, God, make me die;
Since only death can give me calm.
In vain my soul hoped for peace here,
    While prey to such grief.
    Wretched bread . . . come prolong
My comfort-less life . . . But who is approaching?
Who dares to profane the sacred place?
    Let them be accursed!
