Live on Scottish TV, 1982 (re-broadcast on NRK). With Jon Balke, piano, Arild Andersen, bass, and Alex Riel, drums. Another live version of this song is released on Live in Hamburg (Odin Records, Norway, 1993), recorded in 1981.

    Lyrics:
Lonely in the night she wanders
Who can she tell of her heartache
They that knew her didn't care
    Wouldn't share heartache
    She is a lonely woman
No one to cry to at all

Once she wore a smile of gladness
Now on her smile there are teardrops
They that knew her didn't care
    Wouldn't wear teardrops
    She is a lonely woman
To wander alone through the darkness

    Once she loved a man
Don't bother to imagine how she loved him
    You'd never guess at all
She never told the secret of her sorrow
And yet there was someone who knew

He had eyes that saw her sorrow
He heard the sound of her sadness
When he called her no one came
    But the same sadness
    He calls the lonely woman
But never again will she hear him

  • Radka Toneff - My Funny Valentine

    5:43

    My funny valentine
    Sweet comic valentine
You make me smile with my heart
    Your looks are laughable
    Unphotographable
Yet youre my favourite work of art

Is your figure less than greek
Is your mouth a little weak
When you open it to speak
    Are you smart?

But dont change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
    Stay little valentine stay
    Each day is valentines day

Is your figure less than greek
Is your mouth a little weak
When you open it to speak
    Are you smart?

But dont you change one hair for me
Not if you care for me
    Stay little valentine stay
    Each day is valentines day

  • Just Like a Woman - Radka Toneff

    5:16

Just Like a Woman is a song by singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on his 1966 album, Blonde on Blonde.______Photo:Monica Bellucci_______

    Just Like A Woman
    Nobody feels any pain
Tonight as I stand inside the rain
    Ev'rybody knows
    That Baby's got new clothes
But lately I see her ribbons and her bows
    Have fallen from her curls
She takes just like a woman, yes she does
She makes love just like a woman, yes she does
And she aches just like a woman
But she breaks just like a little girl.

    Queen Mary, she's my friend
Yes, I believe I'll go see her again
    Nobody has to guess
    That Baby can't be blessed
Till she finally sees that she's like all the rest
With her fog, her amphetamine and her pearls
She takes just like a woman, yes she does
She makes love just like a woman, yes she does
And she aches just like a woman
But she breaks just like a little girl.

It's was raining from the first
And I was dying there of thirst
    So I came in here
    And your long-time curse hurts
    But what's worse
    Is this pain in here
    I can't stay in here
    Ain't it clear that.

    I just can't fit
Yes, I believe it's time for us to quit
    When we meet again
    Introduced as friends
Please don't let on that you knew me when
I was hungry and it was your world
Ah, you fake just like a woman, yes you do
You make love just like a woman, yes you do
Then you ache just like a woman
But you break just like a little girl.

  • Radka Toneff - The Moons a Harsh Mistress

    3:22

Radka Toneff - The Moon's a Hard Mistress
Ellen Radka Toneff (25 June 1952 21 October 1982) was a Norwegian jazz singer. She died in 1982, officially by committing suicide. She is still considered one of Norway's most outstanding jazz singers.

A daughter of the Bulgarian folk singer Toni Toneff, she was born in Oslo and grew up in Lambertseter and Kolbotn.

She studied at Oslo Musikkonservatorium from 1971 to 1975. From 1975 to 1980, Arild Andersen, Jon Balke and Jon Eberson. among others, were members of the Radka Toneff Quintet. From 1979 she cooperated with Steve Dobrogosz.. In 1980 she participated in the Norwegian finale of the Eurovision Song Contest with the song Parken by Ole Paus.

She received the Spellemannsprisen 1977 in the category best vocal for the record Winter Poem, and she posthumously received Norwegian Jazz Association's Buddy Prize in 1982. The Radka Toneff Memorial Award is based on a fund created with royalties from the albums Fairytales and Live in Hamburg.

Radka Toneff lived together with Arild Andersen for a long time. However, she was having a relationship with jazz drummer Audun Kleive at the time of her death.

Her father was Bulgarian folk singer Toni Toneff; her mother played piano; Radka began piano lessons at age six and studied at Oslo Music Conservatory '71--5, planning to become a piano teacher. She began singing when a pop group was looking for a vocalist, and switched to jazz when she met Erik and Jon Balke and started practising with them. She had no formal training as a singer. Lyrics were very important to her; she set the poems of Nikki Giovanni, Robert Creeley and Sylvia Plath. She led her own quintet '75--80, then met pianist Steve Dobrogosz in Stockholm '79 and mainly worked with him; bassist Arild Andersen was a close musical partner. Albums: Winter Poem '77 on Verve (incl. 'The Ballad Of The Sad Young Men'); It Don't Come Easy '79 on Verve; FairyTales '82 on Odin (duet with Dobrogosz). FairyTales was off-putting for jazz purists because of its title and 'new-agey' cover art, but was her best album, with a version of 'The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress' soon issued on an Odin CD sampler: people who heard it began scrambling for Toneff's albums, but she was already gone. Her sudden death was described by newspapers as a suicide, but friends said that although she brought it on herself, it was an accident. Live In Hamburg '81 was released '92 on Odin and posthumously won her the Norwegian Buddy prize '93, incl. 'Lonely Woman', 'Just Like A Woman', 'Havana Candy', 'Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most', 'Lost In The Stars', 'My Funny Valentine' etc. Norwegian pianist Per Husby and Chan Parker (Charlie Parker's wife) co- wrote 'A Song You'll Never Sing' in Toneff's memory, incl. on his album Dedications '85 on Hotclub, sung by Karin Krog.

    See her how she flies
    Golden sails across the sky
    Close enough to touch
    But careful if you try
Though she looks as warm as gold
    The moon's a harsh mistress
The moon can be so cold

    Once the sun did shine
    Lord, it felt so fine
    The moon a phantom rose
Through the mountains and the pines
    And then the darkness fell
And the moon's a harsh mistress
It's so hard to love her well

I fell out of his eyes
I fell out of his heart
I fell down on my face
Yes, I did, and I -- I tripped and I missed my star
God, I fell and I fell alone, I fell alone
And the moon's a harsh mistress
And the sky is made of stone

    The moon's a harsh mistress
She's hard to call your own.

    See her how she flies
    Golden sails across the sky
    Close enough to touch
    But careful if you try
Though she looks as warm as gold
    The moon's a harsh mistress
The moon can be so cold

    Once the sun did shine
And lord it felt so fine
    The moon a phantom rose
Through the mountains and the pine
    And then the darkness fell
    The moon's a harsh mistress
It's hard to love her well

I fell out of her eyes
I fell out of her heart
I fell down on my face, yes I did
And I tripped and I missed my star
And I fell and fell alone
    The moon's a harsh mistress
The sky is made of stone

    The moon's a harsh mistress
She's hard to call your own

  • Radka Toneff - MYSTERY MAN + Lyrics

    4:27

I wish you tell me what you want and who you are
I wonder just what kind of life you're looking for
At times you seem so full of light, so bright and pure
    I don't believe you're playing games
    And I am not sure
You speak in accents of affection
    Never give your heart away
Are people coins in your collection
will you spend them all someday
I am vain enough to think that I could find a cure
for melodies your mind has made, but I am not sure
You tell me how the friends you have are using you
Perhaps you feel that way becouse you do it too
You seem to frame in complication
I have to smile when you complain
do you invent this situations is it your stars that all to blame
I've heard that there are one or two who you betrayed
You say that other hand's upset the plans you made
I am half afraid that knowin you may leave a scar
I wonder if you know yourself...
    Just who you are...

  • Radka Toneff - Antonios Song

    5:01

    Antonio lives life's frevo
    Antonio prays for truth
    Antonio says our friendship
    Is a hundred-proof
    The vulture that circles Rio
    Hangs in this L.A. sky
The blankets they give the Indians
    Only make them die
    But sing the Song
    Forgotten for so long
    And let the Music flow
    Like Light into the Rainbow
We know the Dance, we have
    We still have the chance
To break these chains and flow
    Like Light into the Rainbow
    Antonio loves the desert
    Antonio prays for rain
    Antonio knows that Pleasure
    Is the child of Pain
    And lost in La Califusa*
When most of my hope was gone
    Antonio's samba led me
    To the Amazon
    We sing the Song
    Forgotten for so long
    And let the music flow
    Like Light into the Rainbow
We know the Dance, we have
    We still have the chance
To break these chains and flow
    Like Light into the Rainbow.

  • Radka Toneff - Saihuekis Datter

    6:48

From the album Leve Patagonia by Ketil Bjørnstad. The lyrics are in Norwegian, but I'll try to translate for you:

Saihuekis daugther is singing songs without words
We don't need words in our country
    Aaaaaaaah...
My song is fire and air and water
And this man, Sjander, he who travelled over the sea
To the country far up north where sad men lives
I taught him a song he could easily understand
Now he lives here, on the fields, with us

Perhaps my song is a bit strange for for Europeans
With taste and class and fine cognac
    Aaaaaaah...
I don't need that, no thanks
But I'll say yes if someone asks me to sing
And big things wil happen, the restless will find peace
Yes, listen to the dark, precious tones
Those which are made of fire and air and water

I may not look like all the women
That Sjander said farewell to far up North
    Aaaaaaah...
But it is beautiful where I live
And you shall hear my voice in the distant ocean rumble
    - in the night birds song, and perhaps you are like myself
    Yes, long live Patagonia!
If you want to see me, you can come here

Radka Toneff: Fairy Tales

    6:56
