Rare video from South Africa....A friend gave this footage to me a few years ago when I was visiting.

Not to be confused with the Australian band Rabbit, RABBITT were a South African rock band formed in 1972, evolving from a band called The Conglomeration, consisting of members (Trevor Rabin, Duncan Faure, Ronnie Robot, and Neil Cloud). Their successes included making it to the top of the South African charts with the hit Charlie in 1976. Rabbitt broke up in 1978. Rabin would later become a member of Yes, and Faure went on to join the Bay City Rollers.

    3:14

I Love a Rainy Night is from the album Horizon, released 1980.
Edward Thomas Eddie Rabbitt (November 27, 1941 -- May 7, 1998) was an American singer-songwriter and musician. His career began as a songwriter in the late 1960s, springboarding to a recording career after composing hits such as Kentucky Rain for Elvis Presley in 1970 and Pure Love for Ronnie Milsap in 1974. Later in the 1970s, Rabbitt helped to develop the crossover-influenced sound of country music prevalent in the 1980s with such hits as Suspicions and Every Which Way but Loose. His duets Friends and Lovers and You and I, with Juice Newton and Crystal Gayle respectively, later appeared on the soap operas Days of Our Lives and All My Children. Single I Love a Rainy Night reached number one on all three charts, the only single in Rabbitt's career to ever do so.

His duets Friends and Lovers and You and I, with Juice Newton and Crystal Gayle respectively, later appeared on the soap operas Days of Our Lives and All My Children.

Rabbitt was born to Irish immigrants in Brooklyn, New York in 1941 and was raised in the nearby community of East Orange, New Jersey. His father was an oil-refinery refrigeration worker and a skilled fiddle and accordion player who often entertained local New York City dance halls. By age twelve Rabbitt was a proficient guitar player, having been taught by his scoutmaster, Bob Scwickrath. During his childhood Rabbitt became a self-proclaimed walking encyclopedia of country music. After his parents divorced he dropped out of school at age sixteen. His mother, Mae, explained this action by saying that Rabbitt was never one for school [because] his head was too full of music. He later obtained a high school diploma after taking courses at night school.

You and I was a duet by Eddie Rabbitt and Crystal Gayle that became a big hit in 1982. In 1982, the two singers joined to record the song You and I. When released to the public in 1982, You and I became a big country pop crossover hit for both singers, showing to the public they could be just as successful singing duets as they are capable of singing solo. Both singers gained equal respect for the song.In 2005, the song ranked #7 on CMT's 100 Greatest Duets in Country Music. Gayle performed the duet with Raul Malo of The Mavericks since Rabbitt had died of lung cancer in 1998.
You and I went to number one on the Country chart for a single week [1] and went to number seven on the Hot 100

  • Rabbitt - Charlie

    2:52

Rabbitt was a South African rock band formed in 1972, evolving from a band called The Conglomeration. The original line-up consisted of Trevor Rabin, Errol Friedman, Francois Roos, Louis Forer and Cedric Samson. They recorded their first single in 1972, a cover of Jethro Tull's Locomotive Breath”, that went to number 18 on the South African Top 20 in 1973, charting for 2 weeks. The band then broke up, but reformed in 1974 with Trevor Rabin (born 13 January 1954) - vocals, lead guitar, keyboards, Duncan Faure (born 16 December 1956) - vocals, guitars, keyboards, Ronnie Robot (Ronald Friedman) (born 5 October 1954) - bass guitar and Neil Cloud (born 3 September 1955) – drums. They made it into the charts a further 3 times, with “Charlie” being their biggest hit (the 7 single release of this song). It reached number 14 and charted for 4 weeks.

The band was immensely popular in South Africa, and they were labelled by many as the country’s first super-group. Most of their songs were written by the band members themselves, most notably Trevor Rabin. After releasing a number of 7” singles and 3 albums, they broke up in 1978. Trevor Rabin later became a member of Yes, and Duncan Faure went on to join the Bay City Rollers.

This version of the song is off the album Boys Will Be Boys, released in 1975.

  • Eddie Rabbitt ~ I Love A Rainy Night 1980 Extended Meow Mix

    5:43

Country music picked up some tricks of disco's charm, like the steady beat. In the early 80's, music was looking for the next thing after disco and a few rhythmic country songs topped the pop charts in 1981 like Dolly Parton (9 to 5) and Kenny Rogers (Lady) and Eddie Rabbitt with I Love A Rainy Night that topped the chart for the week February 26, 1981. Somebody suggested this one to me and now I have forgotten who, this is dedicated to you! Eddie Rabbitt was born in Brooklyn, NY November 27th, 1941. His interest in music was sparked after he joined the Boy Scouts when one of the leaders brought out a a guitar at the a campfire. Eddie was enchanted by the instrument and found support from his dad who was a refrigeration engineer who was also a skilled player of the fiddle and accordion. He got his first paying gig in New Jersey for 12$ a night at the Six Steps Down in Newark. His next move was to Nashville he had a hit written right off with Working My Way Up To The Bottom which Ray Drusky had a hit with. But soon demand for his songs bottomed out and he became employed for a music publishing company to get by. Elvis Presley decided to record Eddie's Kentucky Rain wich became a #16 pop hit for him. The King had anointed the novice songwriter and he wrote hit songs for Tom Jones, Dr Hook and Ronnie Milsap. He scored his first pop hit with Every Which Way But Loose in 1979 that hit #30. He wrote and performed the trucker themed I'm Driving My Life Away for the Roadie soundtrack and he followed it up with another original, I Love A Rainy Night. The night Eddie finished it, he had decided that he would go back and listen to his personal demos, unfinished songs or scraps of songs for inspiration. He found it in a six second clip and the lyric of I Love A Rainy Night, I Love A Rainy Night that evoked the memory of the rainy night he recorded it that he poured into the song. He had a few more pop hits, but none more memorable than I Love A Rainy Night. He died, way too young at 56 on May 7, 1998 from cancer. At the family's request to the media, there was no reporting on his cancer diagnosis nor his death until after his burial. The secret was even kept from Eddie's agent, who had no idea how ill Rabbitt was until he heard about him in the papers.
