  • Keeping Score | Gustav Mahler: Origins

    1:49:56

The first of two episodes explores the roots of Gustav Mahler’s music. SFS Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas journeys to rural Bohemia to rediscover the inspirations of Mahler’s music, and traces Mahler’s life through the premiere of his first symphony in 1888. It shocked the contemporary audience, but as MTT and the San Francisco Symphony reveal, on location and in performance, this ground-breaking symphony contains elements of everything else that Mahler composed. Shot on location in the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, and in performance in San Francisco’s Davies Symphony Hall.

    Bonus Features:
Full-length concert performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 1 by the San Francisco Symphony originally filmed in high-definition 16:9 widescreen and 5.1 surround sound.

  • Japanese Influences in 20th Century American Music

    1:28

The history of the cross-cultural interaction between American composers and Japan is documented in unpublished and published scores, manuscripts, and correspondence held, often uniquely, in the Music Division of the Library of Congress. In this lecture, W. Anthony Sheppard examines examples of this relationship in the works of Henry Eichheim (1870-1942), Claude Lapham (1890-1957), Henry Cowell (1897-1965), and Roger Reynolds (b. 1934)who each traveled to Japan and approached the creation of modern music in ways profoundly influenced by their experiences.

    W. Anthony Sheppard is a Professor of Music at Williams College. In addition to his research interest in images of Japan in American music, he also explores general American music history, opera and musical theater, and film music analysis.

  • Ten2One - Right Now - Emporia State University

    3:58

Emporia State University and Ten2One present Right Now the hype song created by students Gabriel Andrews and Benny Bowden for the school's Now & Forever campaign.

    Lyrics:

I'm tired of waiting my turn
    And never takin' the lead.
I'm rising out of the earth.
    I know my time.
    I will not follow.
    I won't rewind
Cuz they told me that my time is right now.

    Verse 1:
    (Benny)
First off, I wanna say welcome.
I think I hear a buzz and I know it ain't your cell phone.
That's the sound of a black and gold nation.
Hornets get loud so they can hear what we're sayin'.
Right now is the time and the place is here,
So I wanna hear Emporia cheer!
We want it right now and we're not gonna wait.
Put your stingers up. Emporia State!
    (Gabe)
Yeah the fans in the stands, they got the pulse
That keeps the heart of a champion pumpin'!
Feel the ground start to shake cuz we're in the place!
Let me see y'all jump and Go! Go! We got the flow!
We ain't slowin' down and soon the world will Know! Know!
    That we 'bout to blow!
And we gon' show you how Right Now!

    Chorus (Gabe & Benny):

I'm tired of waiting my turn
    And never takin' the lead.
I'm rising out of the earth.
    RIGHT NOW (Right Now)
    I know my time.
    I will not follow.
    I won't rewind
Cuz they told me that my time is right now.

    Verse 2:
    (Gabe)
Nobody gotta swagger like Corky the Hornet!
This ain't a bandwagon, it's a train and we on it!
They act tough when we're not around,
But they better be ready when they come to E-Town
    (Benny)
We ain't gotta worry 'bout Washburn! (Nah)
We ain't gotta worry 'bout Pitt State! (NAH)
But what we all wanna know is...
    WHAT'S AN ICHABOD ANYWAY???
    (Gabe)
Cuz they never seen nothin' like this before.
We're headed to the top, so ya better make sure,
If you've ever been above us, say hello to the ground.
Cuz we're stackin' em up and then we're knockin em down!
    (Benny)
Yeah ESU come on it's time to go!
We stay on our grind like vamanos!
We in the game! I see you lookin' real close.
We ain't in class, but you better take notes!

    (Chorus)

    Bridge:

    (Chants)
    ESU! ESU! ESU! ESU!

    (Gabe & Benny)
    I'm not invincible.
    I cannot do this alone.
But with my team all around me
    I'll reach the pinnacle!
    (The pinnacle, Ohh the pinnacle!)
    (Chants continue)

    (Chorus 2X)
