  • Christmas Flash Mob | Air Force Band at National Air & Space Museum

    6:24

Starting with a single cellist on the floor of the National Air and Space Museum's Milestones of Flight gallery and swelling to 120 musicians, The United States Air Force Band exhilarated museum visitors yesterday with its first-ever flash mob. The four-minute performance featured an original arrangement of Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring/Joy to the World, led by the Band's commander and conductor, Col. Larry H. Lang. Unsuspecting museum visitors including tourists and school groups were astonished as instrumentalists streamed into the gallery from behind airplanes and space capsules, and vocalists burst into song from the Museum's second floor balcony. Also available in high definition (Executive Producer: Col. Larry H. Lang)

  • Wake Up Bulgaria

    6:07

Hundreds of protesters built barricades around Bulgaria's parliament, effectively trapping over 100 lawmakers, ministers, and journalists in the building for more than seven hours on Tuesday following a brief scuffle with police.
Protesters pulled out sidewalk tiles and piled garbage bins to cut off roads to Bulgaria's parliament, shouting Mafia! and Resign! and Red Garbage!, to keep the deputies under blockade until the Socialist-led government steps down.

An earlier attempt to get deputies out of the parliament with a bus led to a scuffle with police. It was aborted after protesters threw bottles and other objects at the bus, while others sat in front of it.

Thousands of Bulgarians have been protesting almost daily in Sofia since last month following a government decision to name a powerful media magnate as security chief, which many see as an example of private interests controlling state institutions.

The government's withdrawal of the appointment failed to quell public discontent in the European Union's poorest country, which also is one of the bloc's most corrupt.

    3:56

Adaptation of Bepi & the Prismas song Fermoposta

    Lyrics:

    Listen
    Sometimes we do clash
    Alternate colours
    Look at me, suddenly
I feel down in the dumps
And it frightens me so much
    So far as I'm inconstant
I could never make you hurt
When I think at the way you hold me tight
I grieve and I miss you so

We sent a message at the same time
To offer ourselves and it's priceless
That we trust and we feel
    Like we hold Heaven's key
For all the time that we stay together
Dancing leaves from the trees, they're falling
And even down from the ground
We would still rise from grey

    Distances
    Rails or highways
    A blizzard on mountains
    Night walk on the seaside
    Come tempest, come rain
    Like a wind of change
    Past tends to haunt me
I really need to make you know it
You look so fine in this hot july night
Would you come on holiday with me

    (adaptation lyrics © Christian Ryder
original version © Il Bepi / Tiziano Incani)

    1:59:45

Moscow Central Sabantuy 2012. June 30. Kolomenskoye Park. Main stage. Sabantuy is the favorite holiday of Tatar people. It can merge the soul of a nation, its beautiful customs, songs, dances and ceremonies. The name of the Sabantui comes from Turkic words: «Saban» - the plough and the «TUI» - a wedding, a celebration. Before his celebrated in honour of the beginning of spring field works (in June-July). According to some studies, this ancient holiday has ancient history. So far back as 921 AD the Christian era, described it in his writings, the famous scholar Ibn Fadlan arrived in Bulgar as ambassador from Baghdad. Also in the region of Tatarstan Alkeyevsky scientists discovered tombstone Bulgar period, the inscription on which reads that the deceased rested in 1120 on the day Sabantui. The origin of the ancestors of the Tatars of the holiday calendar Sabantuy associated with the rites of public prayers and sacrifices in honor of the god of the sky and the sun Tengre and ancestral spirits. Despite the impact on the feast of Sabantuy at different times of certain elements (Muslim, Christian, Soviet), passing the tradition of practices, games and competitions Sabantui remained continuous. During the period of the Khanate of Kazan Sabantuy received the status of the mass of the national holiday. It is held after the spring sowing, when the hard life of rural dwellers comes a little respite. Modern Sabantuy retained all the value that was passed on from generation to generation. A tradition of summing it the outcome of the workers during the spring field work began in the Soviet era and continues today.

On Saturday, December 14, 2013 Berklee students and Boston musicians furnished the MFA's Shapiro Family Courtyard with song, featuring soloist Mark Joseph & a full choir and string section. The nostalgic Christmas tune rang through the MFA amongst hundreds of unsuspecting onlookers and brought bustling and chatting crowds to silence in a bid to capture the essence of the holidays.

A refreshing spin on traditional seasonal choral music... thoroughly marvelous! -- National Public Radio

Few things evoke the magic of the winter holidays like the splendor of the human voice raised in song, and for its part Kitka has discovered a treasure trove of seasonal music, from a wide variety of Eastern European ethnic and spiritual traditions. Wintersongs showcases material hailing from countries like Bulgaria and Belarus, Georgia and Greece, and from pre-Christian celebrations of the solstice to rousing Slavic folk carols, humorous Yiddish Chanukah songs, and lush, meditative Eastern Orthodox incantations. Wintersongs taps into something deeply essential and ancient, says Kitka vocalist and executive director Shira Cion. In our programming, we thought beyond simple tunes associated with the holidays. We wanted to evoke the mystery, the beauty—even the danger—of this time of year when the nights are so long, dark, and cold. A few of our songs capture the intensity of winter moods, while others embody the warmth, light, jubilation, and feelings of community that people everywhere summon to survive the most challenging season of the year.

  • Cellar Sessions: Ayo - Im A Fool September 27th, 2017 City Winery New York

    4:22

Ayo sits down for a One On One Session at City Winery New York on September 27th, 2017. Watch the full session here: For more info visit: Audio & Video by: Ehud Lazin

    Setlist:
    Boom Boom
    Paname
    I'm A Fool

Ayo’s a warrior… although that’s hard to believe when you see her, so beautiful and frail with her guitar slung across her shoulder. Yet she spends all her time on the road, on stage or in the studio, living the life of a true artist – one who isn’t just playing at being a star, but loves music more than anything in the world. “I never really work on an album. I write songs all the time until, at some point, I realize I have enough material for an album. Then I go into the studio. For the last ten years, I’ve been on the road, traveling and making no distinction between my music and the rest of my life. I just can’t do it. Maybe pop artists can separate performing from their private lives, but I can’t. Playing guitar and singing come naturally to me.”

After selling one and a half million records in 40 countries, Ayo again turned to the producer of her first album, Jay Newland, to make her latest: Ticket To The World. Recorded live, its prolific collection of sixteen songs breathes sincerity and elegance. Beginning with the cover photo, taken (like all the liner photos) at the huge Château Rouge African market in the heart of Paris: style in the ghetto. Turning to the music, with the very first notes of “Fire” with its whiff of folk-rock insurrection, the stage is set. This a revolution in a velvet glove, inspired by passion and powerful emotions. “For me, it’s all about the soul. I wrote “Fire” during my last stay in New York, just when the riots were beginning in London, not too long before the Olympic Games. Everything was changing… and not necessarily for the better. Music isn’t just about entertainment, it can also be a weapon to fight injustice. Used the right way, music can spark revolution.”

There’s a shift to country-folk music on “Justice”, a duet with Clarence Greenwood aka Citizen Cope, a singer and songwriter (especially for Dido, Santana and Sheryl Crow). Ayo admires him greatly. “He’s one of my favorite artists and I wish people appreciated him as much in Europe as they do in the United States. We became friends and I asked him to write the duet. He brought a different touch to my music, a new color.”

There are two covers on the album. One is “Sunny”, made famous by Boney M in the disco years, but originally performed by Bobby Ebb in 1966. “I adore Bobby’s version, it’s one of my childhood memories.” Ayo recorded it for Arte TV’s Summer Of Soul, a series she hosted this year. The other cover is a song from an artist who returned to the limelight after a long absence: Rodriguez. “I discovered him in the movie Sugarman. I was on a plane going to Swaziland and I must have seen it three times running during the flight! He made a real impression on me, he’s a poet. Straightaway, I knew I wanted to cover one of his songs. The director of Motown suggested “I Wonder”. It’s my favorite. The tune is incredible, it stays rooted in your memory.”

She recorded all the songs with a team of remarkable musicians (Larry Campbell on guitar, Ira Coleman on bass) in one of New York’s finest studios: Avatar. With one exception. “I wrote ‘Who’ when I was in Bulgaria,” Ayo remembers. “I was doing a concert there and I played it on stage. It went down so well that I knew I had to include it on the album. So I went back to Paris and recorded it in the studio. It was the last track we laid down for Ticket To The World.” The album’s drummer Charles Haynes and guitarist Sherrod Barnes are joining Ayo on tour, where her songs take on a whole new dimension.

The album ends with a special version of ‘Fire’ featuring Youssoupha. “Four years ago, the father of my child was recording in a studio where Youss’ was working and told me about him. I watched his videos on YouTube because I like to see new hip-hop artists. He had a fantastic flow and plenty to say.”

“I’m Walking”, “Who, “I Need You”, “Complain”, “Teach Love” with its Creole flavors… there are so many powerful tracks on this album, which seems certain to be a success with the public. But that’s not really Ayo’s concern. “I’m passionate about music. Songs are my therapy. Music has powers – it can cure people and give them strength or faith. Music is a divine instrument – it’s my religion. I don’t think about the commercial side, that’s a passion killer. Every record is a success for me and I feel very lucky that there are people who buy my albums and come and see me perform. All that’s a blessing. The rest is a bonus.”
