  • Top 5 Forgotten 80s Songs You HAVE To Hear Vol. 3 | POP FIX | Professor of Rock

    17:11

Featuring exclusive commentary from Rick Springfield, Thompson Twins' Tom Bailey, and Loverboy frontman, Mike Reno, presenting 5 songs from the 80s that haven't been given their due. This is volume 3 of the Pop fix we covered earlier. Despite a resurgence of 80s music in TV shows and movies of late (think Stranger Things, Ready Player One, and Glow), as well as increased radio play and streaming, our five featured songs don't seem to make the cut, but deserve recognition. Listen to them in the playlist below. Songs included: Affair of the Heart by Rick Springfield, The Captain of her Heart by Double, Feel it Again by Honeymoon Suite, Lay Your Hands on Me by Thompson Twins, and Talk it Over by Grayson Hugh.

    #80sHiddenGems #80s #Top5

Hey Music Junkies, Professor of Rock , always here to celebrate the greatest artists and songs of all time; I you love music, You'll want to subscribe below so you don't miss out. We have so much more coming…

I've done a few videos where I've discussed 5 seemingly passed over songs from the 80s that should be in more regular rotation in our lives. As I've said before it seems like whenever pop culture uses music from the 80s to represent the decade or to conjure up an emotion or a nostalgic feeling, the same 30 songs get used over and over again, even on radio stations, we here a lot of the same songs on repeat. We all love these songs but there is so much more to celebrate. So here are 5 more songs.
The past 2 volumes I've done, some people have commented and said, ….these are songs I've heard before, or still hear.

Again my criteria here has always been that the songs I cover for the most part were hits in their day but are a lot of times at the back of the bus, decades later, so that's why I celebrate them.
They haven't been used in pop culture much and haven't received as much radio play. So It's time to change That. I've included them in a playlist below so you can listen and see if you agree. Make sure to click below and leave a comment on your feelings.
    So let's get into it:

#5 Affair of the Heart by Rick Springfield. Rick Springfield was a few years beyond his massive number one smash and 80s standard, Jessie's Girl. when he released this song. Featuring the classic 80s guitar and synth dynamic duo that carried it up the charts.

#4 The Captain of her Heart by Double This perfectly graceful slice of dream pop sat right at the midpoint of Haunting and Peaceful, depending on your mood or your nature. I always felt that it was quite eerie yet a completely satisfying and transfixing melody whenever it came on the radio it always hypnotized me into a harmonious trance.

#3 Feel It again Honeymoon Suite There were many great artists that came out of Canada that had great output in the 80s, From Bryan Adams and Rush to Loverboy and Cory Hart and Triumph to Glass Tiger and this band that formed in 1981. Honeymoon Suite would switch members before getting a record deal in 1983, with singer/guitairst Johnnie Dee as the consistent and core member up to that point.

#2 Lay Your Hands on Me Thompson Twins: I'll tell you right now. This is a perfect pop song. It's Synth Pop Majesty. It was the first single released from the Thompsons' album Here's to Future Days written by the three members Tom Bailey, Allannah Currie and Joe Leeway. There are several versions of this song. It was first put out in the UK a little less than a year before the album was dropped.

#1 Talk It Over by Grayson Hugh This song seemed to come out of nowhere in 1988. Grayson Hugh started playing piano at 3, Bought up on classical music until his early teens when rock and soul took over. He played piano in a black gospel choir for a year, studied under several great musicians and dropped out of high school to focus on 100% on music. He released an album in 1980 that didn't take.

Today we have another feature with Legendary producer/songwriter/and musician Alan Parsons who engineered Pink Floyd's the Dark Side of the Moon. Alan received a Grammy nomination for his work on the album, his first and he was known for doing much more than what is normally considered the scope of a recording engineer's duties on this record. Dark Side of the Moon is of course, one of the biggest selling albums in history and possibly the most storied album. How many urban legends are tied to this mysterious work of art? I can't tell you how many stories I heard growing up from hearing that there was a massive factory that only manufactured Dark Side of the Moon LP's all year around. Many others, some I talk with Alan Parsons about and get his side of the story. We also discuss some of the tracks. Her's Alan Parsons with the rest of the story. Lyrics:
I met you in the dark, you lit me up
You made me feel as though I was enough
We danced the night away, we drank too much
I held your hair back when
    You were throwing up

Then you smiled over your shoulder
    For a minute, I was stone-cold sober
I pulled you closer to my chest
And you asked me to stay over
I said, I already told ya
I think that you should get some rest

I knew I loved you then
    But you'd never know
'Cause I played it cool when I was scared of letting go
    I know I needed you
    But I never showed
But I wanna stay with you until we're grey and old
Just say you won't let go
Just say you won't let go

I'll wake you up with some breakfast in bed
I'll bring you coffee with a kiss on your head
And I'll take the kids to school
    Wave them goodbye
And I'll thank my lucky stars for that night

When you looked over your shoulder
For a minute, I forget that I'm older
I wanna dance with you right now
Oh, and you look as beautiful as ever
And I swear that everyday'll get better
You make me feel this way somehow

I'm so in love with you
    And I hope you know
Darling your love is more than worth its weight in gold
We've come so far my dear
    Look how we've grown
And I wanna stay with you until we're grey and old
Just say you won't let go
Just say you won't let go

    I wanna live with you
    Even when we're ghosts
'Cause you were always there for me when I needed you most

    I'm gonna love you till
    My lungs give out
I promise till death we part like in our vows
So I wrote this song for you, now everybody knows
Finally it's just you and me till we're grey and old
Just say you won't let go
Just say you won't let go

Just say you won't let go
Oh, just say you won't let go

  • 4 Reasons You are Not Growing as a Musician & A look at you are God alone from Marvin Sapp

    23:53

Do you feel stuck as a musician? Everyone else has chords and runs except you? In this video, Sean looks at 4 Reasons You are Not Growing as a Musician and what you can do about it.

In the second part of the video, Sean looks at the song You are God alone from Marvin Sapp, to show some of the chords and movements in the song

To get the Special Offer of MIDI Files for FREE go to (the offer is front and center on the page)

0:00 Reason #1) Too many distractions. But its more than that. Its focus. Where are too focused on what other musicians are doing to the point where it is distracting because we are constantly comparing our sound against theirs. Causing an inner cycle of depression and feelings of doubt. I believe all musicians struggle with this at some point. We're glad to see musicians do cool stuff BUT... (what about me?)

2:58 Reason #2) Aiming too High. Even if Cory Henry or Art Tatum sat you down and showed you their best chords, it doesn't mean you will automatically play like them. And deep down we know this is true. And the reason for this is because they are where they are at because of the natural order of things. There are steps that they took to get there but you want to skip those steps and reap the benefits of their hard work and effort. Follow the natural order. You will then not only be able to understand them but by then you won't want to sound like them cause you'll have your own sound

5:30 Reason #3) Not motivated. Well I wouldn't be motivated either if I only looked at what every musician did (reason #1) and expected myself to play like the greatest (reason #2). I focus on disciplining myself to perform a certain small task that I know that I can do. Something easy. Then I get progressively more difficult in my expectations, which brings me to the last reason we aren't growing

8:00 Reason #4) Goals are too vague. The Youtube Thumbnail for this video perfectly represents what goals should look like. Specific and Measurable. Try to Have a goal before you sit down to practice. Sometimes that goal will come to you DURING practice. You will try and play a chord in a song but you always slow down at THAT PART because you DON't KNOW the chord. There is your goal. Learn the chord. Its that simple. Don't complicate it.

Chihei Hatakeyama is an ambient musician originally from the Kanagawa prefecture, now based in Tokyo. We will follow him to the roots of his universe, in the Kamakura and Enoshima areas, where he grew up.

Originally inspired by bands such as The Velvet Underground or My Bloody Valentine, Hatakeyama progressively eliminated both vocals and rhythm from his music creation process, leading to his ambient style, taking listeners on an acoustic journey. His work holds a deep relation with nature, as both visual scenery and sounds are translated into his music, as his continues to pursue new sounds.

    Lyrics:
    Check it out, Joe, hah!

Two, three, four, eins, zwei, drei
Sie sagt, „Sugar sweet, ya got me rapping to the heat!“
    Ich verstehe, sie ist heiß
Sie sagt, „Babe, you know, I miss my funky friends.“
Sie meint Jack und Joe und Jill
Mein Funk-Verständnis, ja, das reicht zur Not
Ich überreiß', was sie jetzt will

    Alles klar, Herr Kommissar?

Hey, wanna buy some stuff, man, huh?
“Did you ever rap that thing, Jack? So rap it to the beat.”

    Alles klar, Herr Kommissar?

Hey There Music Junkies, The Professor of Rock here with your latest Pop Fix. This week we drop the needle on 3 songs from Dan Fogelberg. In my opinion Dan Fogelberg has the most sincere voice out of any generation.

When the song called for deeply intense emotion, He would answer, every time. In reference to the song Longer Dan said I was lounging in a hammock one night, looking up at the stars, it just seems that this song was drifting around the universe, it saw me and decided I'd give it a good home. This quote provides such a testament to Dan's humility and sincerity. Highly respected session player, Jerry Hey, gives us his take on spending time with Dan Fogelberg in the studio.
