  • Retired musician helps his wife with Alzheimers practice piano

    16

The man in the video is Professor Zhao Weijian, another student of Mr. Ferdinand Adler. The woman playing piano is his wife Li Baoqiong. Both of them are closest friends and colleagues with my parents for decades. I remember when we were little, we were next door neighbours for years. Professor Zhao used to be a violin professor at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and the director of China Musicians Certificate Program (similar to RCM Exams or ABRSM). Madam Li, like my mother, was a piano accompanist at the Central Philharmonic Society. Now they are both in their 80s, and Madam Li has Alzheimer's disease, they live in a senior's care facility in Beijing. To help slow the deepening effect of Alzheimer's, Professor Zhao takes his wife to the lobby every day and helps her play on the piano there. This video was taken a few days ago when one of Professor Zhao's students was paying them a visit for Chinese New Year.

  • Who is Edicson Ruiz, the youngest musician ever to play with the Berliner Philharmoniker?

    2:56

When the Venezuelan double bassist Edicson Ruiz was accepted by the Berliner Philharmoniker, he was only 17 years old. He is the youngest member ever to have played in the orchestra. And Edicson Ruiz was the first musician from Latin America to join the Berliner Philharmoniker.

How did Edicson Ruiz manage to join the prestigious orchestra? Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra meets Edicson Ruiz in the Berlin Philharmonie and talks to him about his life.

Edicson Ruiz was born in Caracas in 1985. He studied double bass with his professor Felix Petit, and later with Klaus Stoll at the Orchestra Academy of the Berliner Philharmoniker. He began his orchestral career in 1996 as principal bassist with the Sinfónica Juvenil de Caracas. Three years later, he became double bassist for the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar. At the age of 16, he made his debut there as principal bassist. Since 2003 Edicson Ruiz has played with the Berliner Philharmoniker.

  • Coffee Shop Musician Sings Surprise Duet with Matisyahu without Knowing It || ViralHog

    3:03

Occurred on July 31, 2016 / Maui, Hawaii, USA

The video was recorded by Matisyahu bassist Stu Brooks, shows the spontaneous duet that followed between local musician Clint Alama and his musical inspiration.

Matisyahu was taking in the local sounds last Friday in Hawaii when he heard a familiar tune. It was a street performer on ukulele, jamming to 2009’s “One Day.”

“Do you know who wrote that song?” Matisyahu asks.
    “Matis,” Alama answers.
“I’m Matisyahu,” the Jewish reggae artist replied.

Pretty good timing, to say the least. Matisyahu was in town to headline the MayJah RayJah Music Festival and gifted a set of guest passes to Alama, no doubt making the ukulele player’s day. -Stu Brooks

  • Professor Longhair - Big Chief

    6:23

Henry Roeland Roy Byrd (December 19, 1918 – January 30, 1980), better known as Professor Longhair, was a New Orleans blues singer and pianist. Professor Longhair is noteworthy for having been active in two distinct periods, both in the heyday of early rhythm and blues, and in the resurgence of interest in traditional jazz after the founding of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

The music journalist Tony Russell, in his book ''The Blues – From Robert Johnson to Robert Cray'', stated The vivacious rhumba-rhythmed piano blues and choked singing typical of Fess were too weird to sell millions of records; he had to be content with siring musical offspring who were simple enough to manage that, like
Fats Domino or Huey Piano Smith. But he is also acknowledged as a father figure by subtler players like Allen Toussaint and Dr. John.He first recorded Big Chief with its composer Earl King in 1964. In 1981, he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. He was awarded a posthumous Grammy for his early recordings released as House Party New Orleans Style, and in 1992 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The B side of the 1985 Paul McCartney single 'Spies Like Us', entitled 'My Carnival', credited to Paul McCartney and Wings, was recorded in New Orleans and dedicated to Professor Longhair.
