  • Vocal Mixing For Pros - Using EQ, Compression and FX | Featuring Michael Johns

    21:08

This is how I approach how to mix a vocal in a track from top to bottom. I discuss spot EQing, De-essing, Compression, EQ, Dealing with Sibilance, Harshness and using Effects like Reverb, and Delays. I am demonstrating with a demo I did with my dear friend Michael Johns, an Australian singer that performed on American Idol in 2008. He finished in 8th place and died unexpectedly in 2014 at the age of 35 of dilated cardiomyopathy. He was a dear friend and one of the best human beings I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He is greatly missed by his friends, family and his lovely wife Stacey.

If you're wondering what I do on an average vocal track, it would be some combination of what I talked about in this video, with these steps being essential:
    Ableton Saturator
    Ableton Compressor
Waves Renaissance De-Esser (usually de-esser after all compressors, I made this track really fast so that was a slightly less optimal order)

    Purchase:

    --

    Transcript:

Today, I'm going to be showing you how to mix a smooth sounding lead vocal.

I'm going to be using the song, The Stone by the band Goose and Fox. Please allow me to preface with the fact that this song is really well written. The lead singer has a beautiful voice. It was recorded in a great studio with great microphones and equipment, by really great engineers. As a mix engineer, that will make your life a lot easier. Sometimes as mix engineers, we receive things that were recorded in a bedroom. Maybe the lead singer shouldn't be a lead singer. Poor microphone technique. Could be anything. But in this case, every link in the chain was really good. And that helped me a lot.

Regardless, we have a pretty dense arrangement. A lot of tracks, you can see. It took a good amount of work to get the vocal to sit right. I'll show you how we did that.

So, I'm going to play the final mix with all of my effects on the lead vocal right here, engaged.

    [music and vocals]

Let's fast forward to a more dynamic part of the vocal performance.

    [music and vocals]

All right. So, let's mute that and any effects on that vocal, and play the raw vocal in context. You're going to hear, especially at the louder parts of the performance, it's a little bit harsh, and it doesn't sit quite right.

    [music and vocals]

So, I started with compression. I don't always start with compression on the lead vocal. There are different schools of thought, but in this particular case, since the lead vocal was a little bit harsh and needed some taming, I used the CLA-2A. As you can see, we've got a good amount of compression here.

    [music and vocals]

So, there's compression throughout, but especially on the latter parts of the performance. After that, I used the EQ-3, which I think is really great for subtractive EQ. Works really well because it allows you, if you hold down Shift+Control to solo a band. That allows you to find unmusical and unwanted frequencies really quickly. Let me show you how I work. Some engineers will say, Never solo anything. I'm not one of those engineers.

    [music and vocals]

    So, 425.

    [music and vocals]

    851. That's a pretty harsh frequency.

    [music and vocals]

1400. And then lastly, a little bit above 5 kHz, I wasn't liking too much. Every song is going to be different, but this plugin helps a lot and of course, get rid of... Most of the time, you're going to want to get rid of these sub-y low frequencies that don't add much.

After that, this wonderful plugin, called The Decapitator, I use for distortion. Not distortion in the way that you would think, but more to just help it sit in the context of the mix. You can get pretty crazy with this plugin if you turn up the wetness.

    [music]

In this instance, I did not want that.

    [music]

So, it's mostly the dry signal, but it helps pull forward the vocal a little bit and lets it sit better. After that, this API compressor is really great. I've got a pretty fast attack and relatively slow release. It's just a general compression throughout, about 3 dB.

    [music]

A little bit more on the louder parts. After that, to add some air, I always use, not always, but most of the time, the API 560, because I find that the 16 kHz is excellent. Let's take a listen.

    [music]

So, don't go overboard with this plugin, but I find cutting a little bit of mids and adding some 16 kHz really helps with air.

After that, because I have so much compression and EQ and stuff going on, I find that de-essing is really important. I like this de-esser right here. Sometimes, I also manually de-S by bringing down the volume automation. But in this case, just this regular de-esser with a range of -1.4 dB.

    [music]

So, once again, let's go back a little bit and find how the vocal sounds raw.

    [music]

Then after all of these effects.

    [music]

Now, these effects that I've used, I will never use the same signal chain twice. Probably, you can go through every session I've ever worked on, and you're not going to see these exact settings right here and these particular effects in this order. It's all about the song and finding what the lead vocal needs to get the story across. In this case, it just ended up being these particular plugins.

    Transcript Exerpts:

Today is about aux tracks for greater control when doing parallel processing. Today is lead vocal, then I'll do more on bass, kick, snare.

We've got lead vocal level. I'm setting this lead vocal track, processing it with some EQ, some compression, and that's going out to a lead vocal level.

The lead vocal level is here, and that's getting treated with EQ, compression. I'm parallel compressing it, and if you look at parallel compression lead p-comp is sent out to the lead vocal level, so the dry and parallel compression are meeting at the last chain of processing. But more importantly, level between parts.

Let's solo her vocal and mute the parallel chain. Now I'm going to un-mute the parallel chain. Then we've got the Manny Marroquin plugin. Got the Manny EQ and I'm using that after all of that compression to bring some classiness, some air. Then Waves Vocal Rider. I'll side chain the music to the vocals so that I can keep the vocal on top. I've given the lead vocal quite a bit of love when it comes to automation there. So that's impacting how that signal gets sent into the compressors, as well as the parallel compression.

All vocals, drums, percussion, low-end, all music, and the only two getting compression are the all drums and then I'm treating the music a different way with the slate stuff.

I wanted the drums to be heard more than the music so I dipped the music out at that one little section. On this song I didn't do what I normally do, which is drop the overall level by one dB, and then pull up at the pre-chorus by half a dB, and then pull up for the chorus back to zero. Between the pre section you've got some percussion, production, drums and strings.

  • Mixing Modern Female POP Vocals - Exclusive Tutorial

    17:58

Mixing modern female pop vocals starts with learning hot to mix pop vocals, how to make vocals sound good, how to eq vocals and how to process pop vocals.

This mixing tutorial will show you the basics of pop vocal mixing techniques.

The mixing tips contained in this tutorial will help you to produce like a pro! Beginner music production is a lot easier when you have mixing tricks that the pros use.

Mixing techniques are not something that you develop over night, but with the right tips and tricks and music engineering tutorial you will be well on your way to developing the skill set that you need to create amazing mixing demos.

Successful music engineers are successful because they take t heir natural talent and combine it with the right music technology. Modern mixing success relies heavily on knowing how to use modern mixing technologies.

    Let’s Jump Right In.

The very first thing you want to do is to master the compression. Compression will get rid of the background noise nicely and isolate some of the unwanted sounds.

The goal is to always compress slowly. The goal with compression is to find the gate threshold that works for your ear and style and that complements the vocals.

Finding the sweet spot takes a bit of an effort. The slower you move the better the results. This also requires a great deal of listening.

The compression will give the track a more natural and comfortable sound. It reduces the frequencies that are not discernable to the human ear.

Once you get the compression threshold set and you feel satisfied with your results it is time to move on to balancing out the sound.

Getting the right balance between vocals and instruments is critical so we are going to talk about EQ. You need to get very familiar with how to use the equalizer feature.

Most people mistakenly think that the EQ controls only volume, but it does more than that. It adds the balance and can control the brightness of the vocals.

To equalize the vocals, you want to start out by cutting out anything 60Hz because you will not need anything below that level to master the vocals. Fullness is usually found between 100HZ and 250HZ.

Whatever you do, do not listen to the vocals without the instrumentation and try to equalize or compress from there. You must be the listener and the listener are not hearing the vocals without the music.

The type of sound will highly effect the settings on your equalizer. We go over some tips in the tutorial that will give you a general idea of what settings work best!

    Some Tips.

Mudding is not always a bad thing when it comes to vocal sounds as a matter of fact sometimes it enhances the vocals nicely! Vocal compression can leave some sibilance sounds behind. That is what the De-esser is for.

Typically, you are going to get quite a bit of sibilance with female vocalists and you will notice it with s’s or t’s. Words with s’s or t’s tend to come across as hissing noises.

Sometimes they do not sound so bad and can add a bit of character to the vocals, other times they sound awful and can be annoying to hear.

A de-esser can get rid of the noise. This dynamic processor can be used right after the compression and the equalizer to clean up the track nicely.

We address a wide range of tools and how to use them to mix modern pop vocals like a pro. Watch the video, gather the tips and tricks and then get to practicing.

Leave your comments or questions below in the comments section and share some of your mixes with us.

Enjoy the video and remember no one starts out as a master mixer, practice, practice, practice in your home studio is going to be the best way to hone your skills and get to the level of master as quick as possible!
