  • Talking Bass With Todd Johnson - Innovating & Educating Bass Guitar

    1:1:26

    Todd Johnson Website:
    Muckelroy Basses Facebook Page:

This week I’m sitting down to Talk Bass Guitar with the awesome player and wonderful human being, Todd Johnson.

Todd is both a bass innovator and hugely popular bass educator. He’s a popular jazz bass performer as both sideman and solo artist and has developed a wonderful style of playing both chords and bass lines simultaneously on his 6 string bass.

Many of you might also know him through his use of the Floating Thumb technique which he developed from his studies with Gary Willis and now teaches in a very systemized and accessible way alongside all of his other educational methods.

So let’s sit down with Todd and get into some Talking Bass!

  • James Fallon - Psychopathy and Science

    1:8:19

Dr. James Fallon is a neuroscientist, biologist, professor at UC Irvine, the founder of a stem cell research company, and author, who discovered one day as he was examining the brain scans of criminals that he had the brain of a psychopath. He’s since given a Ted Talk on the subject that’s been viewed over two million times, and I reached out recently to see if he wanted to talk. Our conversation ranged from how he used to steal cars, to the neuroscience behind Putin's brain, as well as how violence passes through generations.

  • A short introduction to Anarchism Part 3

A short introduction to Anarchism Part 3 of 11

“To be GOVERNED is to be watched, inspected, spied upon, directed, law-driven, numbered, regulated, enrolled, indoctrinated, preached at, controlled, checked, estimated, valued, censured, commanded, by creatures who have neither the right nor the wisdom nor the virtue to do so. To be GOVERNED is to be at every operation, at every transaction noted, registered, counted, taxed, stamped, measured, numbered, assessed, licensed, authorized, admonished, prevented, forbidden, reformed, corrected, punished. It is, under pretext of public utility, and in the name of the general interest, to be place under contribution, drilled, fleeced, exploited, monopolized, extorted from, squeezed, hoaxed, robbed; then, at the slightest resistance, the first word of complaint, to be repressed, fined, vilified, harassed, hunted down, abused, clubbed, disarmed, bound, choked, imprisoned, judged, condemned, shot, deported, sacrificed, sold, betrayed; and to crown all, mocked, ridiculed, derided, outraged, dishonored. That is government; that is its justice; that is its morality.
General Idea of the Revolution in the Nineteenth Century, translated by John Beverly Robinson (London: Freedom Press, 1923), pp. 293-294.”

    Biography
Tyrants is a black shymponic metal band from Rome formed in 2001 by Andrea Aerioch Di Nino. After a long seek Aerioch finally found a worthy musician to work with on the sound he was looking for. Like said before, the genre is a black symphonic metal but opened to other influences, with solos and melodic parts, all mainly composed by the guitarist Marco Sinthoras Gulluni.

The first demo Tyrants was recorded in Rome in 2006 and has been appreciated by many Webzines for its sound, raw but at the same time plenty of melodies, accurate arrangements and giving much space to synths.

The second demo Beyond Death was recorded in 2007 adding new parts but leaving the sound and compositions characteristics unchanged.

Differntly, at the recording time of the first studio album, titled Ruchus, Tyrants decide to leave the typicals raw black metal recordings for a cleaner and more defined sound to bring out
Sinthorass works with guitar and orchestral parts, leaving to Aeriochs voice the raw touch characterizing the band. In the Ruchus album we find new songs but old tracks too from both
Tyrants and Beyond death demos, played and rearranged according to the new sound adopted by the band in the last period. Ruchus has been produced entirely by Tyrants in 2011.

An ulterior change, completing the final work result, has been the meeting with Martina Di Marcoberardino who recorded, as guest, some opera voice parts composed to maximize her vocal range
and give some tracks a more soft and less aggressive tone.

The other guests contributing to Ruchus realization are AlessandroLord Vampyr Nunziati, singing the chorus in Beyond death, and Riccardo Endymion Studer who made the choir in Ruchus and Reborn.

  • From Shadow Unto Crystal

    5:25

This song was made two weeks prior to the Season 3, Episode 1 airdate. I wrote this song to show the expectations for him.

As you might already know, this is my King Sombra's Theme.

Sombra is the Spanish, Portuguese, and Galician word for shadow, which suggests that he has something to with shadows. He's responsible for the disappearance of the Crystal Empire, among other things. Memories and mentioning his name brings pain. Id est aeternum malum. (For this is eternal evil).

The song also touches upon the Crystal Empire itself, and it's own epicness. It's a whole new land, outside Equestria, and it has the potential to have grand scenes of crystal outcrops on grassy fields, a scent of spring air filling the lungs, and crystal ponies with manes that bedazzle most non-crystal ponies.

In other words, Season 3 is at hand. Are you prepared for November 10th when it all goes down?

Feel free to use my music for your projects.

    [EDIT] November 10th, 2012:
He's a looming evil shadow watching over you spreading fear to your heart. On a side note, he is actually the first villain that wasn't cocky. If Discord did something like this he would probably be sitting on a couch waiting for the shield to weaken. Sombra waited while he used his spells and magic to keep Twilight away from the Crystal Heart. Discord and Chrysalis were over the top and charisma villains while Sombra was intimidation and actually Pure Evil. PLEASE watch the episode one more time and look at Sombra again and this time think of him as another villain line, not in the same line Discord and Chrysalis fall under. I guess by hiding the Crystal Heart in the place where every crystal pony feared to roam the most, put that in a cursed door, on top of a cursed staircase, followed by another trap, he is still more evil than most say. I see him like a Moby-Dick: Everypony talks about him, but we really don't see his true form until the end. The more I look at this guy, the more I start to like him. . .

I realized that even the most natural of my friends still used conventional toothpaste and shampoo because they weren’t willing to sacrifice quality. There are natural options and ones that work but find products that do both was almost impossible. We tackled the toughest first, creating the first and only natural toothpaste that is fluoride and glycerin free, and that has calcium and hydroxyapatite to uniquely support the mineral balance in the mouth. It also contains neem oil and green tea to support a healthy bacterial balance in the mouth and fight bad breath. • Martha Helfer, Lessing and the Limits of Enlightenment.

    31:10

How were Jews represented in the literature of Sara Levy’s world? This talk considers the great Enlightenment author Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, Germany’s most famous pro-Jewish author and political activist. Lessing’s theological and dramatic writings on Jews and Judaism form the de facto benchmark of pro-Jewish discourse in German letters, yet a systemic tension runs throughout his oeuvre. The three major works Lessing wrote promoting tolerance toward Jews and Judaism – the theological treatise on The Education of the Human Race (1780) and the two plays The Jews (1749) and Nathan the Wise (1779) – programmatically question their pro-Jewish and anti-anti-Semitic Enlightenment messages, and hence constitute a pivotal juncture in the formation of the rhetoric of anti-Semitism in German letters.
