Nova Musik - Korg microKORG XL+ with Rich Formidoni

Check out great deals on Korg microKORG XL+ at Nova Musik:

Korg USA's Rich Formidoni gives us an overview of the microKORG XL+, including sounds unique to the '+' model and a tour of the front panel interface.

With its unmistakably unique exterior and its inimitable sound, the microKORG set the standard for analog modeling synthesizers. The year 2008 saw the introduction of the microKORG XL, which inherited the microKORG's fat and powerful sounds, while adding keyboard staples such as electric piano and CX-3 organ. And now, in the next evolutionary step, the microKORG XL+ delivers a fresh update to the sounds and look of the microKORG XL, making it an ideal compact keyboard.

Lush analog modeled synthesizer sounds that are characteristic of the microKORG have been freshly added to the microKORG XL+. In addition, for band use, the microKORG XL+ comes equipped with the piano sound from Korg's classic stage piano, the SGproX (famous for its ability to stand out in your band's mix), as well as its hard-edged grand-type electric piano. This compact package also includes sounds from the M1 and the VOX organ, vintage tape-type string and flute machines, as well as other gorgeous sounds from keyboard history.

Casio VL-Tone improvisation by Raymond Castile

My very first electronic instrument was a Casio VL-Tone (or Casio VL-1, both names are on the instrument). I was just a little kid and already in love with Vangelis, Wendy Carlos, John Carpenter and other synth players. So my parents bought me this little toy synth, either for my birthday or Christmas. I played with that thing night and day. I made avant-garde tape recordings, thinking I was Vangelis recording Beaubourg. That was the only electronic instrument I had until I turned 16, when my grandmother bought me an organ.

The Casio VL-Tone in this video is the very same one from my childhood. I dug it up last night to see if it still works. Yes it does. I plugged it into my mixer, added some effects, and was surprised at how good it sounded. So tonight I recorded this.

The only two instruments are the Roland Juno 60 providing the arpeggio and the Casio VL-Tone providing the lead. I've got some Lexicon and Valhalla effects to fill out the sound and add some texture.

I doubt I will use the VL-Tone again for a recording like this, but it was fun to do this time.

Covering 4 of the best Piano based songs of their decades: Imagine-by Lennon, Faithfully- Journey, Trouble- Cold Play, and I Can Only Imagine- Mercy Me. The Irony is that I can't stand medleys, so I'm pretty annoyed with myself for doing this. Feel free to tear me a new one, or surprise me with a complement, it's still a free internet...for now. And if you wanna see a tutorial of any of these, I'll try and post something showing how I play it, if I can rig my camera overhead somehow. Anyway Peace, Love , and free Internet.

    Ambient music:
As a genre, ambient focuses on creating a mood or atmosphere through synthesizers and timbral qualities. It often lacks the presence of any net composition, beat, or structured melody. Due to its relatively open style, ambient music often takes influences from many other genres, ranging from house, dub, industrial and new age, amongst several others. Since it is a relatively ambiguous term, ambient has no distinct characteristics, and its style can vary a great deal. In essence, it is a term to describe any form of electronic music which puts an emphasis on tone and atmosphere over traditional musical structure or rhythm. Ambient music is often highly conceptual and experimental in style, while it is said to evoke an atmospheric, visual or unobtrusive quality.

    Space music:
Space music, also called spacemusic, is an umbrella term, synonymous with a segment of New Age Music and Ambient Music. It has also been associated with preceding styles of relaxing music such as lounge music, easy-listening, and elevator music... space music can evoke a continuum of spatial imagery and emotion, which can be beneficial for introspection, and for developing, through a practice of deep listening, an awareness of the spatiality of sound phenomenon. This type of psychonautic listening can produce a subtle trance-like state in certain individuals which can in turn lead to sensations of flying, floating, cruising, gliding, or hovering... space music is used by some individuals for both background enhancement and foreground listening, often with headphones, to enable states of relaxation, contemplation, inspiration, and generally peaceful expansive moods; it may promote health through relaxation, atmospherics for bodywork therapies, and effectiveness of meditation. Space music appears in many film soundtracks and is commonly played in planetariums.

Colour Etude II & Live Electronics

Live recording of the premiere of my piece, 'Colour Etude II', at IKLECTIK Art Lab in London, 18 March 2017.

Performed by Xenia Pestova & Késia Decoté. Audio Recorded and mixed by Saint Austral Sound. Video by Hugo López-Castrillo.

    Programme Note:

'Colour Etude II' was commissioned by keyboardist Xenia Pestova. The piece is scored for one or two toy pianos and live electronics. It was premiered as a duet by Xenia and Késia Decoté in March 2017, at a concert in London.

The piece is the second in a series exploring the strict application of certain spectral techniques influenced by the research of William Sethares, after 'Colour Etude I', this time with an added emphasis on improvisation. It makes use of two pitch sets; one from the spectral analysis of a toy piano's C4 (middle C), and one from its F4. The electronic components of the piece consist of two procedurally-generated and evolving soundscapes derived from the the analysed spectra, which provide the backdrop for the piece, and a sampler which contains toy piano notes tuned to pitches from these spectra that would otherwise be unplayable (microtones and notes in an extreme high register).

The electronics can be wholly controlled using the 'Colour Etude II: Live Electronics' iOS application, freely available for iPad & iPhone, which greatly streamlines the equipment requirements of this piece and increases portability. Alternative options are available, including a Supercollider patch to control the soundscapes and an EXS24 file for the sampler.

The score provides a series of text instructions, pitch restrictions and some notated examples to structure and guide the player's or players' material throughout the piece, therefore also providing the overall shape. Beyond this, everything is improvised.

Get the app for free here and try out some of the sounds from the piece:

Vox Continental: From Tradition to Innovation

The original VOX Continental, a transistor organ that appeared in the 1960s, is a timeless classic beloved by top players as a practical keyboard with a home on any live stage. Now, a completely new keyboard that carries this concept into the present day has been again released by the VOX brand.

The VOX Continental uses a simple and intuitive interface that allows quick accessibility of every function. The high-quality sound engine section is centered on organ, electric piano, and acoustic piano, and provides a wealth of stage-ready sounds. In addition, the Continental features a powerful effects section to enhance these sounds, and even analog valve drive powered by Nutube, the cutting-edge vacuum tube. It's an instrument that perfectly fits your live performance requirements for a variety of styles including rock, pop, jazz, and more.

The air of tradition that emanates from VOX organs, together with the innovation of decades of research, down to the illuminated VOX logo shows the new VOX Continental is a fusion of both, redefining the existence of the modern stage keyboard.

Roland AX Synth Demo - PMT

Here's a modern take on theose 80's style mobile keyboards that were made famous by Jan Hammer. Everyone under 40 asks... Jan who?.... but the actual truth is that for the past 20 years, Roland have been persistently badgered by keyboard and synth players asking for a mobile synth such as the Roland AX.

So in response to the many requests, here's the latest mobile synth offering from Roland. The first thing potential purchasers should know is that the AX has its own sound generator on-board and doesn't need to be fed via MIDI from another synth or sound module - although it does have full MIDI implementation built-in for layering sounds and handling MIDI controller messages.

It's also packed full of the latest and coolest sounds from the Roland library and - as you can see from the accompanying image - is used with a shoulder strap much in the same way as a guitar (hence the Key-Tar name tag). It also has a few on-board tricks of its own, including a Ribbon Controller, D-Beam controller, and a modulation bar... not to mention the large easy-to-view backlit display.

Specification-wise, the Roland AX-Synth has 49 keys, can provide up to 128 voice polyphony and has 264 tones (Patches) on board, it has stereo 1/4 inch output jacks plus a USB port for connection to a PC or Mac. There's a headphone socket (1/4 inch jack) and the ability to plug-in a foot pedal plus the A/C power input that charges the 8 x Ni-MH internal batteries and allows up to 6 hours use whilst dis-connected from the mains ... It's also possible to download an editor/librarian software application for those who wish to customise their own AX patches.

A big thank you to Luke Edwards for coming to the store !!!

MusicRadar Basics: connecting your digital piano to a computer

MusicRadar Basics is brought to you in association with Roland.

While many digital pianos have built-in tools for learning and making music, you can expand your possibilities even further through your PC. A digital piano can be easily connected to your Windows or Mac computer, opening up a universe of music education, composition and recording software to explore.

One of the main reasons you might wish to connect your piano to a computer is to record your performances, either for self-evaluation for sharing via social media or for sending to family and friends. When you record yourself playing on a digital piano, you are recording data and not actual sound. This has some big benefits. Recording data means you store all of the actions you make when you play a piece - both key presses and control actions. This data is stored in a format known as Standard MIDI File (SMF) and this data format allows you to do many things that you couldn’t do with a simple audio recording.

For example, if you recorded the right hand part of a piece, you could slow it down while practising the left hand. You could perhaps change the sound if you didn’t like the instrument. If you recorded your piece straight into a PC you could even edit individual notes. It is worth noting that some pianos give you the option to record your performance as SMF data or audio – useful if you want to transfer it to a PC and email or burn a CD.

    How do you connect?
Connecting your piano to a computer is very simple. All you need to send MIDI data from your digital piano to your computer and back again is a USB cable. There are two types of USB connector – type A and type B. Type A is a USB to device connector and allows direct connection to a variety of external memory-storage devices such as a USB key. Type B is a USB to host connector and allows connection to computers. If you plan to use these connections, you need to check the type of USB connections available on the instruments you're considering before you buy. Simply stating USB in the specifications doesn't tell you the type of USB connectivity provided.

Just like a digital camera or printer a digital piano needs a bit of software called a driver. You will have to install a driver for your digital piano. All of the major digital piano manufacturers are very good at providing these at no charge.
