    Phosphorescent - Song for Zula

    6:11

Phosphorescent 'Muchacho' out March 19, 2013 on Dead Oceans
iTunes // Amazon // SCD Deluxe Bundle

    Phosphorescent

    Song for Zula
Some say love is a burning thing
That it makes a fiery ring
Oh but I know love as a fading thing
Just as fickle as a feather in a stream
See, honey, I saw love. You see, it came to me
It put its face up to my face so I could see
Yeah then I saw love disfigure me
Into something I am not recognizing

See, the cage, it called. I said, Come on in
I will not open myself up this way again
Nor lay my face to the soil, nor my teeth to the sand
I will not lay like this for days now upon end
You will not see me fall, nor see me struggle to stand
To be acknowledge by some touch from his gnarled hands
You see, the cage, it called. I said, Come on in
I will not open myself up this way again

You see, the moon is bright in that treetop night
I see the shadows that we cast in the cold, clean light
My feet are gold. My heart is white
And we race out on the desert plains all night
See, honey, I am not some broken thing
I do not lay here in the dark waiting for thee
No my heart is gold. My feet are light
And I am racing out on the desert plains all night

So some say love is a burning thing
That it makes a fiery ring
Oh but I know love as a caging thing
Just a killer come to call from some awful dream
O and all you folks, you come to see
You just stand there in the glass looking at me
But my heart is wild. And my bones are steam
And I could kill you with my bare hands if I was free

    Lyrics:
Let’s go for a ride, hej you turn me right on

Let’s get on the bike, hej you turn me right on

Ain’t nothing to hide and hej you turn me right on

The city at night, hej she turn me right on

The kids in the park, hej they turn me right on

The city at dark, hej it turn me right on

Rose on the back, hej she turn me right on

Ain’t nothing will last but hej she tell me, “Ride on”

Take your greedy hands, lay em on me

Take your greedy hands, honey, lay em on me

It’s not in the heart, but hej you turn me right on

We sit at the bar and hej you turn me right on

We lay in the dark, honey, hej you turn me right on

We wait for the part and hej you turn me right on

Take your greedy hands, lay em on me

Take your greedy hands, honey, lay em on me

Moving too fast, hej it turn me right on

Shifting to pass, hej it turn me right on

I know nothing can last, but hej you turn me right on

And Rose on the back, hej she tell me, “Ride on”

I was sittin at a bar in New England
I was thinkin bout another beer
They had a lady playin on a piano
I was liking how it got to my ears
Said hey I like it how you play that piano She just said honey what are you doin here I said well I'm sittin at a bar in New England I was thinkin bout another beer

She said don't I know ya Honey, don't I know ya Honey, don't I know you?

Hey the very first time we laid eyes on you Your mama burst into tears
We were shaking in the medical basement And I guess everything was all in arrears

I was staring like a fool at the camera
Just sayin honey what are you doin here? Hey well the very first time I laid eyes on you Your mama burst into tears

    I said don't I know ya

Honey, don't I know ya Honey, don't I know you?

    3:27

‘C’est La Vie No.2’ from Phosphorescent’s new album ‘C’est La Vie’, out October 5th on Dead Oceans.

    Pre-order / Download / Stream:

    I wrote all night
Like the fire of my words
Could burn a hole up to heaven
I don't write all night burning holes
    Up to heaven no more

I stood out in the rain
    Like the rain might come
    And wash my eyes clean
I don't stand out in the rain
To have my eyes washed clean no more

    C'est la vie she says
But I don't know what she means
I say Love, easy, hey come to me
    C'est la vie she says
But I don't know what that means
    I say alright, well
    C'est la vie

I stood out in the night
In an empty field and I called your name
I don't stand out all night in empty fields
And call your name no more

    I waited for days
For your voice to answer to me
I don't wait up for days
For your voice to answer to me no more

    C'est la vie they say
But I don't know what they mean
I say love's easy if you let it be
    C'est la vie they say
But I don't know what that means
    I say alright, well
    C'est la vie
    I say alright, honey
    C'est la vie
Ain't that just how it goes, honey
    C'est la vie

    Phosphorescent - There From Here

    5:23

From his album C'Est La Vie (2018)

Fifteen years on from making his first album as Phosphorescent, Matthew Houck hasn’t quite achieved the success of his US peers - his music never being quite clear.
He has traded in effects-layered, dreamworld shades of country rock but, most importantly, hasn’t yet enjoyed a breakout song.
A lot has happened to Houck in the five years since his last album, Muchacho and it seems to have brought to his music more focus and vitality. The result is his slickest and best-produced record yet.

Phosphorescent - My Dove, My Lamb

    9:30

    lyrics:
I remember evenings when my dad would sing
Hiding in the hallways, I am listening
Keeping still my body until it's borne aloft
Her hair is soft her breath is soft and her name is soft
And gather me completely in her sighing hands
My dove my dove my lamb

Born with ocean thunder underneath our veins
Lonelier than cows left standing in the rain
Holy when our weight into the waves is tossed
Though ships get lost and fish get lost and names get lost
She will wait to greet me where it meets dry land
My dove my dove my lamb

So. Careful of that language some words are stones
They'll lead you out from town and leave you all alone
Past the mirrored diamond mares that run all night
Where camp town ladies sing that song aw come aw wry
But lo they sing it sweetly so I'll understand
My dove my dove my lamb

Though my sight be near and my way be long
Though the light I chase be disappeared by dawn
I have seen her standing on the roofs at night
I have seen her silver figure bathed and bright
And I have seen her sleeping in the cold white sand
My dove my dove my lamb

So even in these cities where shes haunting me
Even when my weariness is wanting me
Even when my wickednesses want to breathe
Even in these dirty clubs counting 1-2-3
I will keep a singing til I no more can
My dove my dove my lamb

And later if I'm better I'll be born again
I'll pull my newborn body from the thorns and limbs
Finding with my fingers where they've torn the page
From some ancient book all gold and worn from age
And writ upon it neatly though in trembling hand
My dove my dove my lamb

Then later in the evening I hear trumpets ring
I stretch out in the dark and I am listening
Studying the sadness in your perfect limbs
Move them under mine until they learn to blend
And I will keep repeating til they understand
My dove my dove my lamb

    6:16

‘Christmas Down Under’ from Phosphorescent’s new album ‘C’est La Vie’, out October 5th on Dead Oceans.

    Pre-order / Download / Stream:

The waves are pounding on the shore today The sun is shining on the sand
We've been swimming in the water
We've been living off the land

We've been breathing underwater With all those animals that can Hey we are living underwater
We are living off the land

    Hey it's Christmas down under

Some say that Jesus had a daughter Ah but I don't guess he ever met her And she'd have never met her father No I guess this world couldn't let her

No, this world needed a martyr

And hey it's hard to understand But if you need to make a martyr You've gotta take away the man

    Hey it's Christmas down under

One day my dove will be a dragon It's so hard to understand
All dragon wings and dragon fire Then dragon bones beneath the land

So tonight when the clouds break
With all the lightning and the thunder
Hey come find me 'neath lights of the tiki bars Hey it's Christmas down under
