Philip Herschkowitz (1906 - 1989): Songs from poems by Paul Celan - Espenbaum - VI Leuchten

    Sara Hershkowitz, Soprano
    Lisa Leonksaja, Piano

When Lisa Leonskaja and I first sat down at her piano this January to play through Philip Herschkowitz’s “ Espenbaum”--- this song was a mystery.

What could he have possibly meant, with this music?

The poetry of Espenbaum is by Paul Celan. It is exquisite, it is dark and magnificent and horrifying and wretched and sublime all at once.

Espenbaum is about a young mother being deported to Auschwitz, narrated almost in a childlike tone, like that of a small boy waiting for his mother who never comes back. (“Meine Blonde Mutter Kann Nicht Heim”).

But Philip went and wrote it as—wait for it--- an andantino quasi allegretto.

So who the f*ck writes a song about grief and dead mothers as an andantino quasi allegretto?

This question haunted me for most of December and January of this year.

But as we worked on it, this little miracle happened—the miracle that every musician knows about—when a song you initially don’t understand slowly reveals her secrets to you, and you feel this surge of joy, like God has just given you the meaning of life.

The realization was this: Grief—the unspeakable grief that Philip Herschkowitz lived as a Jewish man in exile in the 1930’s, first from Nazism, then from Stalinsim--losing his family, so similar grief that Paul Celan shared and wrote about---grief is not linear.

Grief isn’t pretty. It's not like on TV where an attractive lady cries dainty tears in a hanky, wearing a perfect Chanel suit, and somehow not messing up her mascara.

    Grief is grotesque.

An allegretto quasi andantino in a song about grief is grotesque.

Because real grief--can be not crying for a year, or five, or twenty after the bad thing happens.

It can be noticing the weirdest thing on the day that the tragedy hits—lipstick on the teeth of the women who gives you the news.

The smell of the neighbors pot-roast in the air, and really wishing you could eat that for dinner instead of whatever they are making at home.

Grief is not logical or linear and sometimes finds something outrageously hilarious or gets horny at the wrong moment.

    Grief is not appropriate.

That is the truth of grief.

    Philip understood this.

The truth and rawness of that, is what makes this-- imo-- one of the most brilliant and savage and honest songs about grief that I have ever heard.

    2:25

Philip Herschkowitz.

    h̲̲, d̲, e̲s̲, b̲, d̲e̲s̲, c̲̲, e̲̲, g̲i̲s̲, a̲, f̲, g̲, f̲̲i̲̲s̲̲

    Spiegel ihr ermüdetes Gebaren;

    Es kehrte zurück zu Gott und in sein altes Maß;

    Gerd Zacher

    Stamm aus Stimme und Geste,
    ein um das andere Mal,
    zittert ohne Hoffnung
    im Windhauch von gestern.

    Das Mädchen suchte seufzend
    dies alles zu fangen;
    kam aber immer
    eine Minute hintendrein.

    Oh Sonne! Oh Mond, Mond!
    eine Minute hintendrein.
    Sechzig graue Blüten
    umgarnten ihre Füße.

    Schau, wie sie schaukelt,
    ein um das andere Mal,
als Jungfrau aus Blüte und Zweig
    im Windhauch von gestern.

    Herbst
    Guillaume Apollinaire

    2:05

The Kinderstück by Anton Webern [formerly Anton von Webern]. My recording can be downloaded here:

Twelve-tone music (sometimes also called serial music or just serialism) is really fascinating to me. Apart from its tonality or rather atonality, the compositions of Anton Webern are also having a very minimal touch. To underline the deep and minimal feel I've used a tape delay on this piano recording ...

    -----------------
    Wikipedia says about Webern this:

Anton Friedrich Wilhelm (von) Webern; 3 December 1883 – 15 September 1945) was an Austrian composer and conductor. Along with his mentor Arnold Schoenberg and his colleague Alban Berg, Webern was in the core of those in the circle of the Second Viennese School, including Ernst Krenek and Theodor W. Adorno. As an exponent of atonality and twelve-tone technique, Webern exerted influence on contemporaries Luigi Dallapiccola, K?enek, and even Schoenberg himself. As a tutor, Webern guided and variously influenced Arnold Elston, Frederick Dorian (Friederich Deutsch), Matty Niël, Fré Focke, Karl Amadeus Hartmann, Philipp Herschkowitz, René Leibowitz, Humphrey Searle, Leopold Spinner, and Stefan Wolpe.

Webern's music was among the most radical of its milieu, both in its concision and in its rigorous and resolute apprehension of twelve-tone technique. His innovations in schematic organization of pitch, rhythm, register, timbre, dynamics, articulation, and melodic contour; his eagerness to redefine imitative contrapuntal techniques such as canon and fugue; and his inclination toward athematicism, abstraction, and lyricism all greatly informed and oriented intra- and post-war European, typically serial or avant-garde composers such as Olivier Messiaen, Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luigi Nono, Bruno Maderna, Henri Pousseur, and György Ligeti. In the United States, meanwhile, his music attracted the interest of Elliott Carter, whose critical ambivalence was marked by a certain enthusiasm nonetheless; Milton Babbitt, who ultimately derived more inspiration from Schoenberg's twelve-tone practice than that of Webern; and Igor Stravinsky, to whom it was very fruitfully reintroduced by Robert Craft.

During and shortly after the post-war period, then, Webern was posthumously received with attention first diverted from his sociocultural upbringing and surroundings and, moreover, focused in a direction apparently antithetical to his participation in German Romanticism and Expressionism. A richer understanding of Webern began to emerge in the later half of the 20th century, notably in the work of scholars Kathryn Bailey, Julian Johnson, Felix Meyer, Anne Schreffler, as archivists and biographers (most importantly Hans and Rosaleen Moldenhauer) gained access to sketches, letters, lectures, audio recordings, and other articles of or associated with Webern's estate.

Born in London in 1951, Philip Sawyers studied at Dartington College of Arts in Devon, violin with Colin Sauer, and composition with Helen Glatz (a pupil of Vaughan Williams and Bartok). Whilst at the Guildhall School of Music in London, he studied violin with Joan Spencer and Max Rostal, and compositional guidance from Buxton Orr, Patric Standford and Edmund Rubbra.

In 1973, Sawyers joined the Royal Opera House Orchestra, Covent Garden. During this period he also freelanced with other orchestras and chamber groups including the London Symphony Orchestra, the English National Opera Orchestra and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, some West End theatre orchestras and in film, pop, and light music sessions leaving very little time for composition. Time was also taken up with teaching and coaching, principally as a violin coach for the Kent County Youth Orchestra, and as visiting teacher at various educational establishments.

In 1997, he decided to opt for a quieter life, left the ROH, and undertook a year of postgraduate study at Goldsmith’s College, University of London. Alongside composing, Sawyers now works as a freelance violinist, teacher and adjudicator having spent 12 years as an examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music from 2001-2013.

To Gidon Kremer in Memory of Dmitri Shostakovich / Приношение для фортепианного квартета и ударных впервые было исполнено в Wiener Konzerthaus 17 февраля 2005 ансамблем Kremerata Musica на концерте, посвященном Д. II. L'amant (The Lover)

Let's go to bed, I propose, kissing you,
dusky, the skin, the breasts, the mouth.
Let's go to bed, I murmur, taking hold of you
in a handful, tender, so lovingly,
    your hair, your earlobe,
with great love and fear of loneliness.
And with the nature of one who can yet,
neither resist nor restrain himself further,
already you are standing, inside my embrace,
all consent, lover: Let's go to bed.

Theorin Tango per big band (1995) Duration 5 minutes. Score and parts: HT

Håkan Theorin is a composer of contemporary music, who lives in Stockholm, Sweden. He was born in 1959 and studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm 1979-1983, and has composed works for different categories of instruments and voices. His subjects at the Royal College were, among others, composition, orchestration and electronic music. During the years at the College, he also received lessons in piano two years and clarinet one year. In his spare time, he played the clarinet, saxophones and piano in different orchestras around Stockholm during the years 1972-2007.

The musical language and expressions of his works are sometimes very total-chromatic in a style reminding of the second Viennese School. Other works are written in a rather diatonic language, permitting even ordinary major and minor triads but often composed by chromatic relations of the tonal material. Since 1998, he has mostly used a diatonic, major-, minor-based musical language. His main musical influences comes from G Mahler, F Delius, R Strauss, J Sibelius, S Rachmanninov, A Schönberg, M Ravel and A Berg.

In 2017, he was finally diagnosed with ASD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, specifically Asperger's Syndrome, something he had suspected for a long time.

Most of the scores are available at the Swedish Music Information Center, Stockholm (SMIC, ). Besides, there exists about 150 works composed during the years 1973-1980.
