  • Johnny and Phil Cunningham Reunite Live at Smithsonian Folklife Festival 2003

Leading figures in Scottish traditional music, brothers Phil and Johnny Cunningham were founders of the seminal 1970s band Silly Wizard and the 1980s supergroup Relativity. Born in Portobello near Edinburgh, Phil is a legendary accordionist, Johnny an extraordinary fiddler. Both also gained renowned as composers and entertainers—banter and storytelling being as central to their performances as their astounding playing. They hadn't performed together in eleven years before reuniting for this concert of songs and stories at the 2003 Smithsonian Folklife Festival. Sadly, Johnny passed away unexpectedly a few months after the Festival.

  • Celtic Colours LIVE - Tunes from Here and There

Wednesday night seems as good a night as any to get into some tunes—so we brought some folks together from across the country and over the sea for a night of tunes, from here and there. Longtime friends of the Festival, fiddler Aly Bain and accordionist Phil Cunningham, will join by video from Scotland. After almost 35 years playing together, you can bet they’ve picked up a tune or two along the way. Maybe even some tunes from here on their many visits to the Island for Celtic Colours. Influenced by traditional Cape Breton players like Shelly Campbell, and tapes of Donald Angus Beaton and Arthur Muise, Richmond County fiddler Donna Marie DeWolfe certainly has some tunes from here. She’ll be accompanied by Joël Chiasson on piano. And with their contemporary folk, jazz, and pop influences—and roots in Gaelic tradition, Irish sessions, and Norweigan folk music—the Aerialists, from British Columbia, will have tunes to share from all over.

  • Homecoming: A Tale of Two Traditions

Violinist Nicola Benedetti, celebrates a milestone year for Scotland with an album which is a true reflection of her native homeland. With a stunning new recording of Bruch's Scottish Fantasy as its centrepiece, the album also includes some of Scotland's best loved songs such as Loch Lomond, My Love is Like a Red Red Rose together with collaborations with Scotland's most eminent folk musicians including Phil Cunningham, Aly Bain and folk singer Julie Fowlis (whose voice can be heard on the Disney/Pixar hit film, Brave).

The new album is perhaps the most personal Nicola has ever recorded, bringing together two musical traditions, classical and Scottish folk; worlds that have, for centuries, co-existed but rarely been recorded alongside one another.

  • Donnas Waltz by Phil Cunningham

Donna's Waltz by Phil Cunningham. Another wonderful tune, and I know I'm probably starting to bore you with my obsession ;-)

I hate the bad lighting, though. But it's winter... and I live up north... and I have those energy saving lightbulbs... and the camera is already a few years old... oh well :-)

  • The Hut on Staffin Island - Phil Cunningham

This is a tune I learnt when I was studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (formerly the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama). Ena was down for a sleep when we ceased the opportunity for a babyless tune. It didn't feel the same though so I think she will probably feature in most of (or all) future videos. ????❤️ Enjoy! ????

Silly Wizard play 3 reels : The Galtee Reel / Farewell To Milltown/ A.B. Corsie ( The Lad From Orkney ).
    The first is traditional, Irish.
The 2nd was composed by Co.Clare fiddler Junior Crehan, not Bobby Casey. It seems the lads got their Co. Clare fiddlers mixed up in attributing this tune.
The last was composed by Phil Cunningham.

Miss Rowan Davies is a slow waltz written by Phil Cunningham.
