    BOOK OF TRUTHS
Words and Music by Peter Katz

I’ve been staying up all night
I’ve been pacing through the halls
I’ve been running every hill that I can find

I’ve been looking for a reason
That you seem to be believing
That the love that we’ve been living was a lie

And I hear you when you say you’re so confused
Would it help for you to read from my book of truths

    It says
    I love you
    I love you
And I know what that means
It means my life without you
    Is no life to me

    We were travelling together
    Yet we ended up apart
I was looking at the signs and you the road

So I went where they were saying
Didn’t see your heart was trailing
Didn’t feel you falling further as we drove

And I’m sorry that it left you so confused
Wish there was comfort for you here in my book of truths

    Like I love you
    I love you
And I know what that means
It means my life without you
    Is no life to me

Won’t you tell me all the changes I can make
Tell me if you need a moment I will wait
If you teach me I will learn it
Give me something I can work with
And I’ll work without a moment of delay

Cause for me when I think of you I’m not confused
Right in bold on the cover page of my book of truths

    It says I love you
    I love you
And I know what that means
It means my life without you
    Is no life to me

    Do you love me
    Do you love me
Can I ask you for real
    When you think of
    Life without me
How does that make you feel

    If you don’t know
    Then I don’t know
Where we both go from here
    But if you’re asking
    What my truth is
    Then my answer is clear

    LIKE WE USED TO BE
Words and Music by Peter Katz and Rich Jacques

    Maybe in other waters
Where the swells don’t look so big
I could take the chance again
    And still think
    Think that I could live

Yeah maybe on a secret road
One of the places only we know
    You could touch my neck
    Forget, and hit reset

When I got my back to you
That’s when you come right back to me
    And you know
    That I know
    That it feels so sweet
    Like we used to be

You know I like it when I forget it
How good that it used to get
We were the dance floor team
With our big dreams, as soon as our eyes met

When we started out we were kids
But after all that life we lived
We made it up so far
Our own two star, constellation bid

When I had your back for you
That’s when you had my back for me
    And you know
    That I know
    That it felt so sweet
The way we used to be

But now I got my back to you
That’s when you come right back to me
    And you know
    That I know
    That it feels so sweet
    Like we used to be

It took me all this time
To get you off my mind
To get my head back on my shoulders
It took me all this time
To get you off my mind
To get you off my mind…

When I got my back to you
That’s when you come right back to me
    And you know
    That I know
    That it feels so sweet
    Like we used to be

    Lyrics:
I can barely even talk about it now
But I don’t know any other way out
I have pushed myself so hard for all these years
Still it’s not clear, what for

All the roads I drive no longer lead me home
I could fill an ocean with all that I don’t know
I was safer in the insides of those walls
But that’s not all there is

    I know everything falls apart
Just wasn’t ready for life to hit that hard

Like the narrow space between the start and the end
Or the mirror that is now and then
Or the insides that are showing through my skin
    They’re paper thin

When your biggest fear it ends up coming true
That’s when you find out what you have inside of you
I am braver than I ever could have known
These days have shown that to me

    I know everything falls apart
Just wasn’t ready for life to hit that hard

Like the narrow space between the start and the end
Or the mirror that is now and then
Or the insides that are showing through my skin
    They’re paper thin

I feel my eyes adjusting to the dark
I can see the light of far off stars
If I let myself get far enough away
From the city of our lives

Like the hold I never really have
I’m getting older, it’s not all in my hands
But I will not be afraid
Of the insides that are showing through my skin

    I'm paper thin
    I'm paper thin now
    I'm paper thin now
    I'm Paper Thin

When I was in LA in December, after 10 non-stop days of intense writing sessions, producer Bill Lefler and I had a couple of free days to play around in the studio and we cooked this up for you. Really proud of how it turned out. This song is a masterfully written pop song, emotional, hooky, love it. Turn this up on some speakers with good low end, or maybe on a late-night drive…

More surprises for you soon. Take care, P

  • Peter Katz - We Are The Reckoning Official Video

    4:45

    Directed by Justin Broadbent (

I am defiantly convinced that we are good. That love drives us, that we can change, that we can do great things that we didn’t know we could do. That it’s ok to be clumsy, get discouraged, make mistakes, while remembering that it’s worth it, that hope can point us towards a better world.

From the refugee trying simply to have their basic needs of safety met, to the grieving mother and father of another black youth needlessly killed, to the person working late hours at a thankless job to get food on the table, to the artist wanting be taken seriously, to the kid just trying to figure out how to grow up in a complex world… you are seen, you matter, you are the reckoning.

    #WeAreTheReckoning

    We Are The Reckoning
words and music by Peter Katz and Justin Glasco

We are the meant to be, the sum of all that we’ve tried
A tattered history but one with nothing to hide
And our reality, stubbornly, will not be denied

We are the enemies of the empty passing of time
And all the energy that stays locked up inside
We are the reckoning, reminding what it means to be alive

Tell me what you seek out
We’ll fumble in the dark and find it
    And clumsily now
We’ll get to where we get
And through our broken steps, we’ll make it

We are the broken ones, we’ll take the stones that they throw
And build a monument, so everybody will know
We cannot be undone, we will become, the lights along the road

Tell me what you seek out
We’ll fumble in the dark and find it
    And clumsily now
We’ll get to where we get
And through our broken steps, we’ll make it

    We will make it

We are the reckoning reminding what it means to be alive
We are the meant to be, the sum of all that we have ever tried
We are the reckoning reminding what it means to be alive

Tell me what you seek out
We’ll fumble in the dark and find it
    And clumsily now
We’ll get to where we get
And through our broken steps, we’ll make it
    We will make it

    It Was You
Words and Music by Peter Katz

    It’s a holiday today
    Spent the morning sleeping in
    Read the whole newspaper
Can’t remember (the) last time I did
It’s so quiet in this house
Gone the rush there used to be
    Not that all the noise
    Really ever bothered me
I was somewhere in the mix
Had my place there in the race
Love in my heart and on my face

Had my home, through and through
Had my work, always to do
Had my dreams, all come true
Had my life, it was you

There’s this question in my head
    Ringing louder every day
What am I still doing here anyway?
    Don’t feel sorry for myself
Just think my time has come
I had my glory days and now they’re done
Want to lay down in the pages
    Of our photographs
Where I was there beside you, man you made me laugh

Had my home, through and through
Had my work, always to do
Had my dreams, all come true
Had my life, it was you

And I’d do it all again
Send my heart back 50 years
    Though I knew one day
Time would send me right back here
    Without you my standing stone
    My ringer in the fight
    I could go 100 rounds
With you there in my sight
But now the bell has rung
    And everyone went home
While I was left to watch you fade to skin and bone
I know you had to go
Your number called too many times
Just wish I could have been beside you in that line

Had my home, through and through
Had my work, always to do
Had my dreams, all come true
Had my life, it was you

    Right And Wrong v2
Words and Music by Peter Katz

    There is a right
    There is a wrong
There’s no debating which is which
    Those days are gone

    There are not sides
    Of equal worth
Cause there’s no value at all
    To hate on earth

    There is a right
    There is a wrong
    It’s been there all along

    It took such time
    For us to see it
It took blood and tears and loss
    Till we received it

    But it’s decided
    The side that won
    You can’t change it now
    It cannot be undone

    What is right
    And what is wrong
    It’s been there all along

    Somehow the white folks
    Can carry guns
And yell hatred at the top of their lungs

    While Ahmaud Arbery
    Out for a run
    Gets hunted down
Though there is nothing he had done

    Or George Floyd
    Knee on his neck
    Saying “I can’t breathe”
    15 times under arrest
    Another life….gone
    This can’t keep going on

    Or Breonna
    Asleep at home
    They knock the door down
    And another life we mourn

    This doesn’t happen
    To the white picket fence
But if we live behind one
    We must take offence

    It isn’t right
    It’s wrong
    But it’s happened all along

    Those bloody pictures
    They are our shame
    But when you’re human
Then you look and feel such pain

    And you ask questions
    And lose your breath
    More sure than ever
From that tightness in your chest

    That there’s a right
    And there’s a wrong
    That’s been there along

    We must get angry
    And take time to cry
    Raises our voices up
    In outrage amplified

    Demand the light
    Denounce the wrong
There’s no debating which is which
    Those days are gone

    There is a right
    There is a wrong
    It’s been there all along
    There is a right
    There is a wrong
    It’ll be there all along

  • Peter Katz and Royal Wood - Brother

    4:36

    BROTHER
by Royal Wood and Peter Katz

I caught a vision of you
    Looking in the mirror
    A picture I had seen
    Before me all these years
    I'd always wanted me to
    Follow where you walked
To be the image of this brother I had watched

    Well I know dear brother
That the sand it falls away
    Into the hour glass
    With every passing day
    We chose our own roads
But no matter what the cost
    I stand before you saying
    No, nothing was lost

We may have followed beating hearts and settled down
We may have built a life away in another town
But blood is thicker than the water in the ground
You are my brother with my brother I am found

I have that photo where I'm cradled in your arms
I'm still that boy now offering shelter from the storm
Well I release you from your standing of the guard
I push your boat away and know you will go far

We may have followed beating hearts and settled down
We may have built a life away in another town
But blood is thicker than the water in the ground
You are my brother with my brother I am found

At rest or in motion that we keep
Inside tucked away in lock and key
Some things in this life were made to last
Like brother when I see you, no time has passed

    LYRICS:

    No heartbeat, she said
    I don’t feel it anymore
    And just like that
    The closing of the door

    That voice in my head
    I don’t hear it anymore
    It’s so silent instead
    So still before the storm

It’s been broken blur since that day
I cry out agains this fate
I'm ready now to walk away
    I’m ready, I’m ready

    Say goodbye to the year
    Say goodbye to the year
To every hope and every fear
    Cause I'm still standing here
    Say goodbye to the year
    Say goodbye to the year

    I still feel my knees
As they crashed to the floor
With the part of me that tried so hard
    But couldn’t fix it anymore

But I’m holding up my finger now
To all the days that let me down
And if I’m angry, I’m allowed
    I’m ready, so ready to

    Say goodbye to the year
    Say goodbye to the year
To every hope and every fear
    Cause I'm still standing here
    Say goodbye to the year
    Say goodbye to the year

    It came and it went
So I'’m free to forget it
I’m free to let it die

At least I found my friends
    G*d I needed them
    I owe them my life

    Say goodbye to the year
    Say goodbye to the year
To every hope and every fear
    Cause I'm still standing here
    Say goodbye to the year
    Every hope and every fear
    Every day of fallen tears
    Cause I'm still standing here
    Say goodbye to the year

  • Peter Katz - Lay It On Me Official Video

    3:43

Official video for 'Lay It On Me' from Peter Katz's latest album 'We Are The Reckoning'

'We Are The Reckoning' on-sale now on iTunes worldwide:

    CD's/ Vinyl at

Video by: Christopher Mills, Number Four Films inc.

    Note from Peter:

I wrote this song (alongside Karen Kosowski and Sophie Delila) originally with one person in mind, but it has come to bring up so many people in my heart every time I sing it.  From watching the people I love get sick and pass away, to working with young people struggling to find their place in the world, to watching friends struggle under the weight of life, that feeling of wanting to bear the burden for someone you love is a recurring one in me. The timing of this video feels just right for me at this point in my life, sometimes the art is one step ahead.

    Note from Director Christopher Mills:

PETER KATZ - LAY IT ON ME casts flowers as the kind of feelings that come with navigating the sometimes bumpy road of relationships.

Sometimes falling into one another - sometimes breathing next to one another, sometimes neglected, and sometimes completely shattered, the flowers play out the role of the fragile importance of communicating with one another when we are vulnerable.

For anyone who might be suffering from Depression, or Anxiety, or Loss in their lives, remember the Friends who have said, LAY IT ON ME to you.

    Yours Truly,

    Millsburger.

    LYRICS:

Lay It On Me (words and music by Peter Katz, Karen Kosowski and Sophie Delila)

Every day you counted on that never added up
Every voice that’s telling you that you’ll never be enough
Every lie and every thing you wish you’d never done

    Lay it on me

‘Cause I would rather take your pain
    Than to watch you hurting
I would rather take your pain
    Than to watch you hurting

When you lock the doors up and there’s no more getting in
When you’re in the water and forgotten how to swim
When your hands they get too heavy,
I will take the weight you’re carrying

    Lay it on me

‘Cause I would rather take your pain
    Than to watch you hurting
I would rather take your pain
    Than to watch you hurting

When the bombs are falling and you need someone to blame

    Lay it on me

‘Cause I would rather take your pain
    Than to watch you hurting
I would rather take your pain
    Than to watch you hurting

  • Peter Katz - Online Streaming Audio Video Tutorial

    32:04

Hi fellow musicians and speakers (and anyone trying to go live online). I’ve done a very deep dive over these past couple of months on how to have great audio/video for online concerts/ talks/broadcasts and wanted to share that knowledge. No strings attached, just want to share the knowledge and elevate the game for all of us. I’ve been helping a lot of friends 1 on 1 and just can’t keep up with the demand to help so I decided to self-record a video going through everything. It’s not a heavily edited video with tight cuts and background music. I just wanted to get it out there to you without any further delay, but hopefully it has the info you’re looking for. As a follow up, I’m hosting a FREE Zoom session next Tuesday night (June 2nd) at 7 pm where you can log in with your questions and I can give advice and support with your set-ups in real time. Just so I have a handle of numbers and can easily send you all the login info for the seminar, you can register for that at this Eventbrite link: You won’t be added to any click funnels or mailing lists or anything, I’m just here to help.

LINKS TO SOFTWARE REFERENCED AND PRE-LIVESTREAM CHECKLIST (couldn't fit this all in the description):

Please feel free to share any of this to anyone who might benefit. Hopefully you can support each other too in the comments with community knowledge sharing (that’s really how I learned all this), and I’ll look forward to seeing you next Tuesday night if I can be of service in real time.

    Big love, take care, P

    Caveat:
I’m not a total lighting/video expert yet, still learning a lot about that. The main focus is great audio, but I have some good knowledge on improving your visuals as well that will be worthwhile.

    GENERAL TIPS

    - Go live PRIVATELY on Facebook/Youtube to test your streams.
    - Self-record on Zoom in order to ‘soundcheck’. Self record every possible sound configuration you’ll be using, and ideally, if you have a nice friend, once you’ve soundchecked a bunch, have them log in to do a final check to listen back in real time
    - If you don’t have a mixer you can actually use Loopback to route to your DAW (Protools, Logic, garageband) to get reverb/compression/etc. I can show this during the live seminar or in a future video if that’s of interest
    - Monitor on headphones/in-ears to avoid feedback loops!!

    PRE- LIVESTREAM CHECKLIST

    ZOOM
    - Confirm that your “microphone” input is your audio interface and not just your laptop speakers
    - Confirm that it says “Turn Off Original Sound” top left (which means original sound is ON which is what you want)
    - Confirm that in your advance audio settings you have both “Suppress…” lines disabled (this shouldn’t change once you change it one time)
    - Confirm that you don’t have ‘Automatically adjust volume’ checked (this also shouldn’t change once you change it one time)
    - Confirm that your “speaker” (aka output) is set to your audio interface or headphones (you don’t want the audio coming out of your speakers which could lead to feedback loops)
    - If you’re using a different camera, under the video column confirm that it’s reading the camera you want it to be reading

    ECAMM
    - Make sure in each scene that you have it reading your desired audio interface (I’ve had it reading my laptop audio, my camera audio, etc by mistake, so double check)
    - Make sure your virtual camera and audio output are on (pro version only) and that your audio monitor is sending where you’re intending for it to send

    GENERAL
    - Turn on Do Not Disturb on your laptop (if you’re on a mac that’s in the notifications tab)
    - If you’re using a phone for camera 2, you must put it in airplane mode, do not disturb AND manually (one by one, super annoying I know) turn off notifications for each individual thing that could possibly notify you during your broadcast. Remember that when you plug your phone in to your computer, it might start getting connectivity to the internet through the cable (using your computer’s wifi) so text messages etc might come in. I just disable anything that could possibly disrupt the broadcast
    - Make sure you’re plugged in directly (not through a hub) for your laptop. ECAMM and other broadcasting software is a major power drain and could drain your laptop if you’re not plugged in directly (speaking from experience)

    'When The Day Is Done’
Music and Lyrics by Peter Katz and Eddie Orso

When the day is done, I’ll be coming to get you
With the rising sun, they’ll be calling you brand new
When the day is done, we’ll be out in the open
And the time will come when I never have to ask again

    Ooh I’m
Yelling it out that we can’t wait no more
    Ooh I’m
I’m coming after, coming after you

It’s crash and burn, over and over
In a hardened world, I know you’re trying to get through
When the change does come, we’ll be higher than ever
At the final turn, what’s then we’ll return to life again

    Ooh I’m
Yelling it out that we can’t take no more
    Ooh I’m
I’m coming after, coming after you

Fall in, I will get you right back up again
Fall in or we can’t go on
Fall in, I will lift you right back up again
Fall in I will keep you strong
    I will keep you strong

When the day is done, I’ll be coming to get you
With the rising sun, they’ll be calling you brand new

    Ooh I’m
Yelling it out that we can’t wait no more
    Ooh I’m
I’m coming after, coming after you

Fall in, I will get you right back up again
Fall in or we can’t go on

  • Peter Katz - Still Mind Still

    7:01

I was in the audience at Glen Hansard's show at the Danforth Music Hall on Sept 16, 2012. During his encore he asked (to my great surprise): 'Is Peter Katz here?' and then invited me up to play a song. This is what happened next. (The band had never heard the song before). (Band members were The Frames/The Swell Season along with members of Levon Helm's band... #dreams)

Huge thanks to Gaby Harvey and Kelly Ambrose for the footage (neither of them had the whole thing so I spliced them together).

Huge thanks to Glen Hansard, the most giving artist I've ever met.

    Dream.

    Take care, Peter

Baby I get dark, then you make it light
When I break my heart, then you make it right
Baby there’s an art to how you live your life
Baby I get dark, then you make it light

See the tears in your eyes
See they fall because of mine
Feel my fears and yours align
    Feel our fears fall behind

Baby I get dark, then you make it light
When I break my heart, then you make it right
Baby there’s an art to how you live your life
Baby I get dark, then you make it light

I have learned to try again
I have learned from how you bend
How you face all your dead ends
How you turn and start again

    Let me take your hand
    Look you in the eye
    So you understand
    All the reasons why
    I became a man
The day I saw you cry
    I became a man
    Standing by your side

So baby when you’re dark, I will make it light
When you break your heart, I will make it right
Babe I learned that art by watching you in life
Baby when you’re dark, I will make it light
‘Cause baby when I’m dark, you always make it light.

  • Peter Katz - Forgiveness

    5:05

The music video for Peter Katz's song Forgiveness. The song was inspired by an interview with Michael Berg, father of Nicholas Berg who was kidnapped and murdered in Iraq by Al-Zarcawi. Michael Berg chose to find forgiveness in his heart instead of carrying on the cycle of hatred and refused to support the killing of Al-Zarcawi despite what he had done to his son. This video is dedicated to his remarkable courage and to his son's life.

We may have followed beating hearts and settled down
We may have built a life away in another town
But blood is thicker than the water in the ground
You are my brother with my brother I am found

Je tiens la photo où tu me prends dans tes bras
Pour te protéger tu sais je serai toujours là
Désormais tu n’auras plus à monter la garde
Tu voles de tes propres ailes et fier je te regarde

We may have followed beating hearts and settled down
We may have built a life away in another town
But blood is thicker than the water in the ground
You are my brother with my brother I am found

Chaque jour, tout s’échange et tout se remplace
(mais) Dans nos cœurs on se réserve une place
Malgré toute la distance et les années
Mon frère quand on se revoit, rien a changé

We may have followed beating hearts and settled down
We may have built a life away in another town
But blood is thicker than the water in the ground
You are my brother with my brother I am found
You are my brother with my brother I am found
You are my brother with my brother I am found

    LYRICS:

See you in the walls, where the cracks are
See you where the light used to be
Written in the dust on your pillow
    I can read you perfectly

In every hour of every day, I’m beaten by the silence
And every night I lie awake, no mercy from the violence

And I can’t wait, so long, so long
No I can’t wait, so long

I’ve been holding on to your echo
And hiding out from the sun
Watching for the trace of your shadow
    …It never comes

And I can’t wait, so long so long
No I can’t wait so long so long
For every hour of every day
For every night I lie awake

    Physical:
    Digital:

    Note from the director:

DEAR is comic-book style flip book through a wide selection of PETER KATZ's many alternate personalities. Anonymous hands from unseen bodies frequently invade PETER's personal space. Sometimes they are covered in letters or paint, other times, they squash, clap, and interact with strange, hand-animated squiggly lines that seem to inhabit and sometimes personify the vulnerable admission of the song's lyrics, and the occasionally impassioned wail of the music.

DEAR is an unusual mix of dark and light themes built with colourful pieces, an honest to goodness, heart on the sleeve performance from PETER, and a hell of a lot of dizzying, hand-painted vintage wallpaper patterns.

Statement from the Director Christopher Mills:
BROTHER is a simple examination of many sets of BROTHERS (and sisters), from VERY YOUNG to VERY OLD, intermingling in a neutral environment, juxtaposed with a Brotherly duo performance featuring PETER KATZ, and ROYAL WOOD, both looking pressed, tight, and ready to take on the entire f**ing world with not only their sizzling charisma, but also their seriously well intentioned passion for doing the right thing. These Men want us to take good care, eat a reasonable meal, and get all those real, personal feelings out, any time you want. As a video, all BROTHER aims to do, is to step back a moment, keep the visual gags loose and simple, and watch all these amazing people have a good time at the studio.

    Right and Wrong
    by Peter Katz

    There is a right
    There is a wrong
There’s no debating which is which
    Those days are gone

    There are not sides
    Of equal worth
Cause there’s no value at all
    To hate on earth

    There is a right
    There is a wrong
    It’s been there all along

    It took such time
    For us to see it
It took blood and tears and loss
    Till we received it

    But it’s decided
    The side that won
    You can’t change it now
    It cannot be undone

    What is right
    And what is wrong
    It’s been there all along

    Despite the layers
    And dirty cracks
    Despite the poison holding torches
    Trying to send us back

    There's too many people
    Who act from love
    Too many people
    Who will always rise above

    Who know what’s right
    Who know what’s wrong
    Who’ve known it all along

    Those bloody pictures
    They are our shame
    But when you’re human
Then you look and feel such pain

    And you ask questions
    And lose your breath
    More sure than ever
From that tightness in your chest

    That there’s a right
    And there’s a wrong
    That’s been there along

    So let’s not worry
    While we cry
Cause there is only one way out
    That we will find

    Towards the light
    Away from wrong
There’s no debating which will win
    Those days are gone

    There is a right
    There is a wrong
    It’s been there all along
    There is a right
    There is a wrong
    It’ll be there all along

    'We Are The Reckoning'
Music and Lyrics by Peter Katz and Justin Glasco

  • Peter Katz - Brother Live

    6:55

Last night, after a crazy day of hauling boxes and furniture, moving into my new place and a storage locker, I booked it out to somewhere between London and Sarnia (not sure where exactly) to play an intimate show in a couple's converted shed/concert hall. I was exhausted, knowing I had to get on a plane to Los Angeles for writing sessions the next day, the timing made no sense. And yet, as soon as I hit the first note on my guitar, something gelled, and I had one of my favourite shows ever playing for the 75 or so people from the community who had gathered for the concert. I found out that 3 of the women there had learned 'Brother' on the Ukulele, as well as Royal Wood's part, and so I invited to come up and play it with me. This video documents what happened next. Totally unrehearsed, and totally magical I think. Playing live music is my saving grace. Love P

P.S. thank to Lauren Huston for capturing this!
