    Info
Shumi Maritsa was the Bulgarian national anthem from 1886 until 1947. The music was derived from the German folk song Wenn die Soldaten durch die Stadt marschieren that was very popular in Bulgaria in the mid-19th century. The original text was written by Nikola Zhivkov, a head teacher in Veles (now in North Macedonia). The lyrics were edited many times, most notably in 1912 by the poet Ivan Vazov. The title refers to the Maritsa river. It literally translates to Maritsa makes noise but the connotation is closer to Maritsa roars.

Mila Rodino (Мила Родино, translated as Dear Motherland or Dear native land) is the current national anthem of Bulgaria. It is based on the music and text of the song Mila Rodino by Tsvetan Radoslavov, written and composed as he left to fight in the Serbo-Bulgarian War in 1885. The anthem was adopted in 1964. The text has been changed many times, most recently in 1990.

Between 1886 and 1947, the Bulgarian national anthem was Maritsa Rushes (Shumi Maritsa, Шуми Марица); from 1951 to 1964, it was Dear Bulgaria, land of heroes (Balgariyo mila, zemya na geroi, Българийо мила, земя на герои); in the brief period between these two, it was the march Our Republic, Hail! (Republiko nasha, zdravey!, Републико наша, здравей!).

  • National Anthem of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Bulgaria

    3:46

[UPDATED FROM 2013] The National Anthem of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Bulgaria has remained as Mila Rodino like its predecessor. However, their Flag and Coat of Arms has drastically changed, with the Coat of Arms somewhat combining the first iteration and the last and with the addition of the Hammer and Sickle within the Star. As for the Flag, the Coat of Arms has been placed in the center of the Flag with a much larger size, rather than being placed smaller and in the upper-left canton. The New Warsaw Pact and each of the 5 member nations were formed after the 2037-2039 Eastern Bloc Revolutions, which was aided by the New USSR's Armed Forces. Unlike the first Warsaw Pact, East Germany and Albania are absent, and Premier Latyeskov feared that if he were to recapture what was East Germany, a third World War would start. After the formation, diplomats from the Warsaw Pact member states along with ambassadors from the Western European states signed the Geneva Non-Aggression Pact during a conference in Geneva, Switzerland on August 23rd, 2039.

I have pledged, to heal the wounds of my nation,
How come my unfortunate brothers rot away?
If I don't regret for them, grieve for them; then I live,
Let the dark streams of blood in my heart go dry.

I have pledged, to spread light to that darkened country,
How come two brothers do not see one another?
When I see this, if I don't get distressed, hurt, seared,
Let the tears that flow from my eyes become a sea of blood.

I have pledged, give my word to die for the nation,
Knowing, seeing, to wipe away the teardrops of my nation.
If I live a thousand years without seeing, knowing and become a khan with council,
Still one day the gravediggers will come to bury me.

Don't miss out all of my other national anthem lyric videos when you check out my Nightcore National Anthem Lyric Videos Made by Disco Saturn playlist at .

NOTE: This upload is actually a reuse of the national anthem of the former People's Republic of Bulgaria under the communist era - Mila Rodino (Мила Родино / Dear Motherland) - that I used in a previous upload while answering this question of alternate history: What if the People's Republic of Bulgaria became a republic of the Soviet Union? This was actually based on surprising research that I saw on the Wikipedia article on the republics of the Soviet Union (

The leader of the People's Republic of Bulgaria, Todor Zhivkov, suggested in the early 1960s that the country should become a union republic, but the offer was rejected.

The new title of this national anthem from an alternate timeline is now called the State Anthem of the Bulgarian Soviet Socialist Republic (Държавен Химн На Българската Съветска Социалистическа Република / Dŭrzhaven Khimn Na Bŭlgarskata Sŭvetska Sotsialisticheska Republika). As a disclaimer I am still showing respect of the original anthem while I wrote down the original Bulgarian text at the bottom so you can sing along with it. I just think this medley remix that I made on Audacity by speeding it up sounds great and liked the way it turned out. The flag featured on this video is what the Bulgarian flag would look like if it were a Soviet republic; it combines the symbolism from the flags of Soviet Union and Bulgaria. See also the original upload featuring the Nightcore version of the anthem at .

  • National Anthem of Bulgaria

    1:45

Bulgaria is a Balkan nation with diverse terrain encompassing Black Sea coastline, a mountainous interior and rivers, including the Danube. A cultural melting pot with Greek, Slavic, Ottoman, and Persian influences, it has a rich heritage of traditional dance, music, costumes, and crafts. At the foot of domed Vitosha mountain is its capital city, Sofia, dating to the 5th century B.C.

Mila Rodino is the current national anthem of Bulgaria.

The song was created by the composer Tsvetan Radoslavov in 1885 after his participation in the Serbo-Bulgarian War. He was inspired to create the song based on his poems when he saw Serbian students singing their own patriotic song on their journey home. It was first printed in 1895 in Part I of Music Textbook by K. Mahan.

    - ORIGINAL CYRILLIC SCRIPT -

    - ENGLISH TRANSLATION -

    Proud Stara Planina,
next to it the north sparkles,
    the sun gilds Vitosha
    towards Tsarigrad it shines white.

    Refrain:
    Dear Motherland,
    you are heaven on earth,
    your beauty, your loveliness,
    ah, they are boundless.

    Bulgarian brothers, let's go
    to the Balkan.
There a heroic battle is approaching,
    for freedom, justice.

Performed by prof. Lily Atanassova. Recorded by Bulgarian National Radio in 1956.
LILY ATANASSOVA (1921 - 2004) was born in Sofia in the family of the pianist-pedagogue and composer Georgi Atanassov who garduated from the Prague Music Academy. She studied with the academician Andrei Stoyanov - the
founder of the BUlgarian piano school and lately became his assistant and follower of his traditions. As a piano
professor in the State Music Academy Lili Atanassova created a bunch of great performers and pedagogues at the
international status. She was a Dean of the Instrumental Faculty and a Deputy Rector of the Academy for many years. She has edited a great amount of piano literature. Took part as a jury member in many prestigious competitions, founder of the Pleven Festival Laureate Days Katia Popova. She has been awarded the orders of Peoples Republic of Bulgaria - First Grade, St Cyril and Methodius - First Grade, Golden Century and elected as Doctor Honorius Causa of the State Academy of Music - Sofia.
Lily Atanassova is an inimitably performer of works by Chopin, Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms. Her great musical achievements give her a place among the greatest Chopin performers in Bulgaria. Critics and public alike feel that one of the peaks in her interpretative art is the Chopin's concert Op.21 f minor and the recital from 1972 with four Scherzos and four Ballads by Chopin - a concert still to be remembered.

Mila Rodino (Мила Родино [ˈmiɫɐ ˈrɔdino], translated as Dear Motherland or Dear native land) is the current national anthem of Bulgaria. It is based on the music and text of the song Mila Rodino by Tsvetan Radoslavov, written and composed as he left to fight in the Serbo-Bulgarian War in 1885. The anthem was adopted in 1964. The text has been changed many times, most recently in 1990.

Between 1886 and 1947, the Bulgarian national anthem was Shumi Maritsa (Шуми Марица); from 1951 to 1964, it was My Bulgaria, land of heroes (Balgariyo mila, zemya na geroi, Българийо мила, земя на герои); in the brief period between these two, it was the march Republiko nasha, zdravey! (Републико наша, здравей!).
