  • Peggy March & José Hoebee - I Will Follow Him HD

    3:12

Taken from Peggy March's new album ALWAYS AND FOREVER (DA-Music / Night Dance Records)

In 1963, Little Peggy March recorded I Will Follow Him and became the youngest ever female artist to have a US #1 hit on Billboard - a record she still holds to this day, nearly 50 years later!

Dutch singer, José Hoebee of 70s hit group LUV' (You're The Greatest Lover, Trojan Horse), recorded the same song in 1982 and enjoyed a #1 hit herself in the Netherlands and Belgium.

In 2011, the two ladies recorded a duet version of their #1 song, produced by Soren Jensen with Piet Souer (who co-wrote and arranged all of LUV's hits). The song is included as a bonus track on the German edition of Peggy's current album Always And Forever together with another duet with José, My Christmas Wish.

With special thanks to Casper Janssen for the idea!

    Muszę iść za nim,
    odkąd dotknął moją dłoń
Wiedziałam;że obok niego zawsze muszę być
I nic nie może powstrzymać go ode mnie
    On jest moim przeznaczeniem

    Kocham go,
    kocham go,
    kocham go
A gdzie on idzie będę śledzić go,
    będę śledzić,

On zawsze będzie moją prawdziwą miłością,
    moją prawdziwą miłością,
    Od teraz, aż na wieki,
    na zawsze
    Będę za nim podążać..????

Exactly 50 years ago on January 22nd 1963, I Will Follow Him was released by Little Peggy March. She became the youngest ever female at barely 15 to have a US No. 1 Hit. She has held onto this title in the Guinness World Records for an incredible 50 years. To celebrate this iconic song, Peggy went into the studios and recorded a new version complete with a video in honour of her 50 years in show business.

PEGGY MARCH - New Album - ALWAYS AND FOREVER
    UK Digipac Edition:
German 2012 Edition (incl. bonus track I Will Follow Him Duet With José Hoebee)

This is a short version of the beautiful title track of Peggy March's new album. A love song dedicated to her husband since 1968, Arnie Harris, and a song that gave me the goosebumps when we recorded it. The instruments were played by Sam Scott, son of the late Clive Scott, only 15 years old at the time, but a very gifted musician. We spent six hours recording the intricate backing vocals with Jackie Rawe before Peggy laid down her lead vocal, pouring heart and soul into the lyrics and hitting some incredible notes. To me, Peggy is definitely up there with singers like Barbra Streisand and Elaine Paige, vocally.

Peggy made her recording debut at the tender age of 14 by RCA Records, and in 1963 she topped the US Billboard charts with her #1 hit record I Will Follow Him, a song that has become a standard ever since. While Peggy landed four more hits in the US charts, she became a big star in Japan and particularly in Germany where she became a household name with countless TV-performances. By the end of the 70s, she had more than 30 chart hits to her credit! In the 80s, Peggy's career cooled off as she moved back to the US to raise her daughter. Still she co-wrote the song When The Rain Begins To Fall which became a European #1 hit for Jermaine Jackson & Pia Zadora in 1984. In the 90s, Peggy moved back to Germany to revitalize her career with another string of albums and singles, as well as being a regular performer in Las Vegas. However, throughout all these years of singing in German, Peggy had the wish to record an album in English again.

The songs on ALWAYS AND FOREVER are an exciting mixture of pop, disco and dance tracks together with grand ballads (the title track) and even a Northern Soul-style track (Graduation Day) as a tribute to her 60s legacy. The song I Still Follow You with its grand orchestration marks a dramatic and haunting closer to the album. Also included in the album is Peggy's first recording of When The Rain Begins To Fall on which she duets with German singer and longtime friend Andreas Zaron. The whole album showcases Peggy's powerful voice to its fullest.

As a bonus, legendary mixer Tom Moulton has given three of the songs his Tom Moulton Mix treatment!

This is a short version of The Lucky One, one of my personal favourites off our album with Peggy March, and a song that with its Latin vibe and joie-de-vivre made the perfect soundtrack in the car when we drove to Miami's Audio Vision Studios and back. I think you can tell on Peggy's vocal that she enjoyed recording this one in particular. I was particularly proud that legendary disco mixer Tom Moulton handpicked this one as one he'd like to remix.

Peggy made her recording debut at the tender age of 14 by RCA Records, and in 1963 she topped the US Billboard charts with her #1 hit record I Will Follow Him, a song that has become a standard ever since. • Peggy March - Every Days A New Day

    3:48

From the album ALWAYS AND FOREVER - UK Digipac Edition - German Edition (incl. I Will Follow Him duet with José Hoebee)

I am very proud that Peggy March got to perform one of the very first songs I ever wrote in my life, Every Day's A New Day, on the German TV-show Fernsehgarten on August 4, 2013, to a thunderous applause from an enthusiastic audience. It is the opening song of our album ALWAYS AND FOREVER, Peggy's first album of new material in English in 30 years, and one that disco legend Tom Moulton chose to do a mix of as well. Peggy, of course, had her breakthrough as a teenager when her song I Will Follow Him shot to #1 in 1963 - our 50th anniversary recording is approaching 40.000 views on Youtube so far. While Peggy's performed worldwide with #1 hits in Italy and Japan along the way, her main audience has been in Germany where she's had a longlasting career throughout the years, also co-writing the mid-80s #1-hit When The Rain Begins To Fall for Jermaine Jackson & Pia Zadora. A tremendous professional and a joy to work with, I am very proud of the album we did together.

  • Little Peggy March - I Will Follow Him

    2:53

Little Peggy March, age 15 years old, only ever had one big hit during her decade with RCA Records, but that song, I Will Follow Him, spent three weeks at the number one spot on the charts and even topped the R&B charts for a week as well. It pretty well helped define the early girl-group sound, as much as the Shangri-Las' Leader of the Pack or Great Big Kiss did the later end of the musical genre. Her subsequent hits, I Wish I Were a Princess (which was featured prominently in John Waters' period romp Hairspray) and Hello Heartache, Goodbye Love, scored much lower in the Top 40. RCA continued to record March for ten years, right into the early '70s, but she never scored an American hit of any consequence after early 1964. By contrast, in Europe, she was a popular recording artist for many years and scored several major hits, especially in Germany, where she moved in 1969.

Margaret Battavio, aka Little Peggy March, had dreamt of a singing career for most of her young life, and had been winning talent contests as a young girl. She was signed to RCA in 1962 at age 14, and made her debut that year with a cover of the song Little Me, taken from a Sid Caesar Broadway hit, which vanished without a trace. Her second single was to ensure her place in the pop music reference books, however.

English-born girl singer Petula Clark, who'd been recording since the mid-'50s, had recently scored a hit in France with a song called Chariot on the Vogue label. RCA producers Hugo Peretti and Luigi Creatore (Hugo and Luigi), best known today for their work with Sam Cooke, found the song and got March to record the number in a new version with simpler lyrics, now known as I Will Follow Him. Clark's recording was a slow, moody, soulful piece, with the singer seeking the depths of the song's meaning, all without the doo wop-style did-ip, da did-ip, da did-ip chorus. It sounded like the work of a woman. March's recording, by contrast, picked up the tempo, added a doo wop-style male chorus and a pulsing arrangement, with prominent drums and chorus, and her breathy, breathless reading of the lyrics. It sounded like the work of a passionate girl, and it defined the girl-group sound as much as numbers like Johnny Angel.

March eventually released an entire album built around her sudden number one hit, including I Wish I Were a Princess, which reached the Top 40 in 1963. The rest of the album was a pretty collection of tuneful teen-pop, the world of romance as seen through the persona of a 15-year-old, including such numbers as My Teenage Castle (Is Tumbling Down) and Johnny Cool. She subsequently saw modest chart success in America with the magnificent Hello Heartache, Goodbye Love, a near-cousin of I Will Follow Him in beat and arrangement, which reached the Top 30 and also became a hit in England; and also with The Impossible Happened, a funny, silly little teenage girl's romantic lament, which made the American Top 50. In early 1964, March was still reaching the lower reaches of the charts with Paul Anka's (I'm Watching) Every Move You Make, but after that, music began changing very rapidly with the advent of the British Invasion sound. She recorded 18 singles for RCA between 1964 and 1971 and several albums as well, none of which charted in any serious way in America.

As it turned out, the United States comprised only one part of the audience she was trying to reach, and listeners over there were far more interested in March, as an American pop star, than Americans were. She moved to Germany with her husband/manager, Arnie Harris, and enjoyed a career in recording, variety show performances, and television appearances. In the 1980s, March returned to America, where she continues to be best known for I Will Follow Him and the naive early girl-group sound that it represents, some 35 years after it was first released. ~ Bruce Eder & Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

PEGGY MARCH - I Will Follow Him (1963) Lyrics

Love him, I love him, I love him
And where he goes I'll follow, I'll follow, I'll follow

I will follow him, follow him wherever he may go
There isn't an ocean too deep
A mountain so high it can keep me away

I must follow him, ever since he touched my hand I knew
That near him I always must be
And nothing can keep him from me
    He is my destiny

I love him, I love him, I love him
And where he goes I'll follow, I'll follow, I'll follow
He'll always be my true love, my true love, my true love
From now until forever, forever, forever

I will follow him, follow him wherever he may go
There isn't an ocean too deep
A mountain so high it can keep, keep me away
    Away from my love

I love him, I love him, I love him
And where he goes I'll follow, I'll follow, I'll follow
He'll always be my true love, my true love, my true love
From now until forever, forever, forever

I will follow him, follow him wherever he may go
There isn't an ocean too deep
A mountain so high it can keep, keep me away
    Away from my love

    Do-do do-do-do do-do-do and where he goes
    I'll follow, I'll follow, I'll follow
I know I'll always love him
