  • Chopin / Paul Badura-Skoda, 1956: Etudes, Op. 25 - Complete

    28:53

From the LP shown above, Westminster XWN 18811, issued in 1959. The Études by Frédéric Chopin are three sets of solo studies for the piano published during the 1830s. There are twenty-seven compositions overall, comprising two separate collections of twelve, numbered Op. 10 and Op. 25, and a set of three without opus number.

    11:16

Fantaisie sur des rythmes flamenco (1973)

A piece for solo piano inspired by Spanish flamenco music by Swiss composer Frank Martin (1890-1974). This live recording by pianist Paul Badura-Skoda (also the dedicatee of the work) was made at the 1994 Raritäten der Klaviermusik festival at the Schloss vor Husum.

Martin provided this explanation of the piece:

The powerful and diverse rhythms of flamenco have strongly appealed to me for many years, but what interested me even more than the rhythmic effect is the expression of flamenco with its mixture of tragedy, act of providence and merriment. ... One day I discovered a sequence of chords which sufficiently provoked the dreamy, intellectual world of romanticism and which immediately expressed itself as a slow rumba rhythm. This beginning has a special character and brings the whole first part of the fantasia along with it. The gradually intensifying rhythms erupt in a frenzied flamenco rumba which stops abruptly when it reaches the climax. After a long silence a 'soleares' is introduced which, like most flamenco dances, is based on an ostinato rhythm. The word 'soleares' means solitude, a solitude which at the same time means longing, rebellion and submission to fate. The work ends in a 'Petenera', a slow dance which represents the sorrows and defiance of a woman who has been left by her lover.

  • Beethoven / Paul Badura-Skoda, 1955: Tempest Sonata in D minor Op. 31 No. 2

    22:40

Digitized from the LP shown above, released on the Westminster label in 1956. The Piano Sonata No. 17 in D minor, Op. 31, No. 2, was composed in 1801/02 by Ludwig van Beethoven. It is usually referred to as The Tempest (or Der Sturm in his native German), but the sonata was not given this title by Beethoven, or indeed referred to as such during his lifetime. The name comes from a reference to a personal conversation with Beethoven by his associate Anton Schindler in which Schindler reports that Beethoven suggested, in passing response to his question about interpreting it and Op. 57, the Appassionata sonata, that he should read Shakespeare's Tempest. Although much of Schindler's information is distrusted by classical music scholars, this is a first-hand account like any other that any scholar reports.

    -------------------------------------------------------
Paul Badura-Skoda ( 6.
