  • Wind that Shakes the Barley Jig, Cock of the North , MVI 2119--20160513_2323 Cockswain

    4:33

Please enjoy this video recorded LIVE at Tim Finnegan's 5-14-16.

    From the Bands facebook page:

We play original music written by the band. Celtic, punk rock, blues and americana influences! We also dabble in traditional tunes, sea shanties, jigs and reels.

    Cockswain cox·swain [kok-suhn, -sweyn]
    noun
    1. the steersman of a racing shell.
    2. a person who is in charge of a ship's boat and its crew, under an officer, and who steers it.
    3. a scruffy Celtic rock band from Phoenix, AZ

The project that became Cockswain was conceived in late 2011 by songwriter, lead singer, and mandolin player Neil Jay Ward, and their debut was St. Paddy's Day 2012. The group mixes in pub standards in between covers of The Pogues, The Dubliners, and Tom Waits with a high-energy punk rock vibe, all while original music remains the focus.

Neil Jay Ward- Lead vocals, guitar, bouzouki
    Clint DAvis - bass, vocals
    Jack Hoole- Drums
Maureen Perzan- flute, tin whistle, vocals
    Amanda Lubking- fiddle
    Wake Lubking- banjo, vocals
    Ryan Woods- lead guitar, vocals

  • Watching Rice Grow

    5:24

A piece inspired by standing out in the rice fields; the sun on your back; a gentle breeze blowing; all is quiet expect the occasional bird, the mechanical rattle and clang of the wind driven bird scarer, and the trickle of water through the subak.

Images taken by me in Bali, Indonesia. Music composed and performed by me.

This piece set to the natural tuning of 432.10 Hz with a base note of 136.10 Hz being the cosmic frequency of the Earth Year. Possibly one of the contributing factors as to why this piece feels so chilled. Thought you might like to know :)

On October 2nd, 2015 at Seamus McCaffrey's, the Sea Merchants ROCKED the place! Anyone who is familiar with the Sea Merchants knows that a night of playing cannot pass by without this one song making its appearance! I think that most musicians have a bit of the rebel at heart in them and this song in particular taps into our independence as a people.. especially here in America.

A special shout out goes to Seamus McCaffrey's Irish Pub and Restaurant who certainly do their fair share in supporting LIVE music here in the valley!

Folks, if you like this video please take a moment to like the Sea Merchants page, it's sort of like putting a tip in their jar plus you get the added benefit of being informed of events if you subscribe to their events. We appreciate all the support and LOVE we can get! Thanks!!

Also, be sure to subscribe to events so that our events will be added to your local event listing on your facebook calendar of events! We hope to see you at an event soon!

Fast Eddie is a veritable library of Traditional old time Irish and English folk songs. Stay tuned each week for more rare, popular and original works by this savvy musician! Catch him live at Tim Finnegan's Irish Pub from 6-8:30 each Friday night!

Jimmy MacCarthy is best known as a songwriter. Composing since the late 1970s, his songs have been recorded by many Irish artists including Christy Moore, Mary Black, Finbar Wright, Maura O'Connell, The Corrs and Westlife. Ride On, recorded by Christy Moore, is one of his best-known compositions

    Ride On

Sure you ride the finest horse I've ever seen
Standing 16' one or two, with eyes wild and green
You ride the horse so well, hands light to the touch
I could never go with you no matter how I wanted to

    Ride on, see you,
I could never go with you no matter how I wanted to
Ride on, see you, I could never go with you no matter how I wanted to

When you ride into the night, without a trace behind
Run you claw along my gut, one last time
I turn to face an empty space, where you used to lie
I look for the spark that lights the night
Through a teardrop in your eye

Ride on, see you, I could never go with you no matter how I wanted to
Ride on, see you, I could never go with you no matter how I wanted to

Ride on, see you, I could never go with you no matter how I wanted to
Ride on, see you, I could never go with you no
    matter how I wanted to

I could never go with you no matter how I wanted to
I could never go with you no matter how I wanted to

The Wind That Shakes The Barley - Reel - Violin - Play Along Tab Tutorial

There is this reel, a song, a novel, and even a movie all with the same title. But none bear any close relation to the tune, save the name, the concept of which is itself a deeply ensconced in Irish consciousness. The song is an Irish ballad by Robert Dwyer Joyce (1836–1883), about a young Wexford boy who is about to sacrifice his relationship with his beloved to join the 1798 Irish rebellion. Oddly, the melody of that song is close to the tune entitled “The Battering Ram.” The novel (1946) is by James Barke, and about Robert Burns. The movie (2006) is directed by Ken Loach, set during the Irish War of Independence (1919–1922) and the Irish Civil War (1922–1923), and about two County Cork brothers who joined the Irish Republican Army to fight for Irish independence from the United Kingdom. The movie takes its title, in part, from the Robert Dwyer Joyce song which is featured early in the film. More recently, the Canadian singer, songwriter, accordionist, harpist, and pianist Loreena McKennitt released her ninth album (2010) which features our tune as the sixth track. The common thread is the name, which refers to the barley (or oats) that Irish rebels often carried in their pockets as provisions when on a march.
