  • Periphery - Blood Eagle

    5:58

Periphery's official music video for 'Blood Eagle', the first single from new album Periphery IV: HAIL STAN - available now on 3DOT Recordings at

Directed by Jeremy Danger ( and Travis Shinn (

    Lyrics:

    We come for war
King of the north and norse
With drums beating, screams repeating and the hammer force of Thor
    Surrender not enough
The christian seed will sing amongst the soil of trees
From the sea is the destroyer
From the sea is the eagle drenched in blood
    Blood eagle is the destroyer
Blood eagle will set the wicked free

Rip the body from the bone now
    Spread the heavens wings
    Show Valhalla glory and memory
    Let the christians sing
    Let ‘em sing

    Let out the roar
    Barbaric to the core
    A storm brewing
All our doing for Odin’s at the door
    The spoils are not enough
    We’ll let ‘em bleed
    The moon takes everyone tonight

    The christians sing
How they sing amongst the broken wings
from the sea is the eagle drenched in blood
    A soul descending swiftly
    The burning stench of afterlife
    No rays from heaven
    Only high sun
    A soul descending swiftly
    The burning stench of afterlife
    No rays from heaven
    And no son
Pleading to the sky once more
    Weeping for the self
For the abandoned children of christ have been laid to waste on the shelf

Pour out the tide of valkyries
The land is ours to claim
No man or woman escape the fire
    Now they can sing
    NOW SING!
    The tide of valkyries

    We come for war
King of the north and norse
With drums beating, screams repeating and the hammer force of Thor
    Surrender not enough
    We’ll let ‘em bleed
    The moon takes everyone tonight

    We come for war

    FLATLINE // LYRICS

Your eyes judge like a jury locked in a trial
No respect for the odd and innocent
    Guilty
Now shut the doors and then open fire
Some fail to make the connection and lose beauty in a mound of rejection
Can’t we understand that no life is out of our hands?
Suffocation and the fear of living is setting in, so let go before he lets go
Patience is wearing thin and leaving him so let go, before he lets go of this life
I wonder what goes on before he lets go

    He says:
Send an angel to pull me from the hell below
This weight is far too much to own and this body doesn’t feel like home
    Send an angel
I feel I’m dying all alone
So lift me up or let me go
because this body doesn’t feel like home
This body doesn’t feel like home

    Love feels far away
The lack of motivation keeps his soul from bettering his own life
Now he’s next level with a bottle and a blade
    retreating in his own way
Suffocation and the fear of living is setting in
so let go before he lets go
Patience is wearing thin and leaving him so let go
before he lets go of this life
I wonder what goes on behind those bloodshot eyes
I wonder what goes on before he lets go

    He says:
Send an angel to pull me from the hell below
This weight is far too much to own and this body doesn’t feel like home
    Send an angel
I feel I’m dying all alone
So lift me up or let me go, because this body doesn’t feel like home

Sleep now and carry on into the black of the night
Sleep now and you’ll be on your way
There’s another one moving on from the flatline
Sleep now and carry on into the black of the night
Sleep now and you’ll be on your way
There’s another one moving on from the flatline

    Slip into the fray
Slip between the night and day

Sleep now and carry on into the black of the night
At peace with everything, but it doesn’t make it right
There’s another one moving on from the flatline
Sleep now and carry on into the black of the night
At peace with everything, but it doesn’t make it right
There’s another one moving on from the flatline

    ABSOLOMB // LYRICS

    Reputations made
    I failed to save
The cold I seek is all I’ll feel
Today I’m selling mine after all
Watch it all fade away to gray
I sold it to rule the world
If only I could rescue you
Cleaning up the mess we’ve made
It’s not the same without your love

    Do you care at all?
    I don’t see a difference
    Is this love at all?

We stayed so close in this life at one time
Now I watch as you fade away
behind the wall of hate inside your mind
    Will we meet again?
I’ll be waiting beyond the edge
    Forever frozen
    Now time stops again
    Revelation

    Solo: Mansoor

I’ve found that it’s all gone
    The absence within us grows
Illuminate the way we choose to flow

    Do you care at all?
    I don’t see a difference
    Is this love at all?

I hold one last feeling of hope
    our paths will meet again
    Beyond the edge
    Forever frozen
    Time stops now

    LUNE // LYRICS

Snow coming down now like December
Burning up in the summer rays
But I’m not stumbling like a pretender
Medicine is flowing through my veins
Heavy eyes, but the tongue won’t stutter
Mouths are moving and this heart is still fluttering
    I’m on my own

You found me in the cold
Now I am wrapped within the warmth of your touch
There’s never a moment that I let slip by in your eyes
Are we growing old and am I melting in the rays of this love?
Never ever gonna let you go
    Don’t let go

    Slow it down now
I cannot remember why I let them chew on my brain
They’ve come and left this town in smoldering embers
But, my dear I’ll die in your rain
Heavy eyes, but the tongue won’t stutter
Mouths are moving and this heart is still fluttering
    I’m on my own

You found me in the cold
Now I am wrapped within the warmth of your touch
There’s never a moment that I let slip by in your eyes
Are we growing old and am I melting in the rays of this love?
Never ever gonna let you go
    Don’t let go

    Do you feel the love?
    Yes I feel the love
Taste it, hold it, feel it, never let it go
    Do you feel the love?
    Yes I feel the love
    Do you feel the love?
    Yes I feel the love
Taste it, hold it, feel it, never let it go
    Do you feel the love?
    Yes I feel the love
    Don’t let go

    5:57

Periphery's official audio stream for 'Garden In The Bones' from the album, Periphery IV: HAIL STAN - available now on 3DOT Recordings at

    Lyrics:

Mercy like a gun when you’ve come undone
I’ve awoken in the hour that receives no one
The sound of a tribe will shake me out until sunrise
The heat of tomorrow released as the wind blows
A beating stare from all the tribe
    No sleep tonight

    The howl from below
The wolf and the soaring crow
    Am I losing control?
Am I losing all of control?
    All spirits entrance
I toss and turn in no romance
From six under the grass the prison breaks like glass

Stripped of all the air in my lungs now
    Flee from the walls
    So alone
Stampede in the room like a buffalo
Raise me up in my throes

    The howl from below
The wolf and the soaring crow
    Am I losing control?
Am I losing all of control?
    All spirits entrance
I toss and turn in no romance
From six under the grass the prison breaks like glass

Upon the burial lie thieves of their past
    Firewater
    Tenacious
    Upon the burial ground

Between the living and the dead we move
Between the living and the dead we all move
Shift all placement, but they’re sifting you
Between the living and the dead we all move

    The claim we stake
    A land within our wake
    A Garden in the bones
A headdress down in the soil we own
We build it on the bullshit or build it upon the burial
    A Garden in the bones
A headdress down in the soil we own

Stripped of all the air in my lungs now
    Feeling so alone
Stampede in the room like buffalo
    Feeling so low
Pull out all the ground from below
    You’ve given quite a show
Stampede in the room like buffalo
Raise me up in my throes

    The howl from below
The wolf and the soaring crow
    Am I losing control?
Am I losing all of control?
    All spirits entrance
I toss and turn in no romance
From six under the grass the prison breaks like glass

Upon the burial lie thieves of their past
    Firewater
    Tenacious
    Upon the burial ground

JET PACKS WAS YES // LYRICS

    These walls of time release
My eyes move like the drift
    The cries, they resonate within
    The fabric tears before me
    Break ties between the kin

Reaching for a way out of this dream
    I waste my breath ascending
    Fears lead me astray
The past brings them to be
    Whats left to carry me...

    But a memory
    The dream endures these lies
Forever at the edge, left surviving alone

    Whats left as I wonder
I've found a world where I am free
    Inside that which is truth

The ground upon which I have grown is not the same
    The fears, they've fallen away
Presently I've found I am not alone in a world of infinity sewn

    Perceive beyond the seam
    A soul evolves as one

  • PERIPHERY - Luck As A Constant

    6:05

This song started out with a set of clean riffs that I had been jamming around with on a Line 6 DL4. I was using the looping function to create clean layers, and you can also have delay going on the patch you are playing, so I was messing with these riffs that used the delay patterns as a rhythm to fill in the gaps, and layering them till I got something pretty. I had also been messing around with the first riff and realized that one led nicely into another I invited Jake over one day and we tracked the basic idea of the song which you can find on my Soundclick page. Jake had some riffs that he had been sitting on that just worked so well with the vibe of my riffs, you gotta love days like those! The first heavy riff is a riff that really uses 3 guitars to their full potential, because there are 3 lines that are either harmonizing or providing counterpoint at most times and it gives the riff a real wall of sound, where it may even be tough to discern which guitar is playing exactly what, but I just thought it had such a cool and rather unique sound, and the harmonies/counterpoint to the riff i had originally written came surprisingly fast. The demo ends with the clean riff from the beginning coming back a little differently, and I had a general idea of what I wanted the song to do, but I just never got around to it, and I kinda left the song alone for a while. When we were doing preproduction for the album, the original plan had been to do enough repeats for a vocal line and then to go into a lead that would end the song. I told that he shoud write the solo for that section, but for some reason I ended up jamming over the riff and coming up with a solo that I was very happy with (which is so rare) so we decided to extend the ending section, and Jake and I could trade off solos. The vocals actually came together on this very song at the end of the recording process, and I didn't hear them until the album was actually getting mixed, but I think Spencer really brought this song to life with his vocals, and the end section of the song is probably one of my favorite vocal lines that he has written, I couldn't imagine a better line over that part! The title of the song refers to the fact that I consider luck to be a very big part of my writing process, and how I almost rely on luck as a constant in my writing process rather than treating it as the variable that it truly is. - Misha

Here is a classic example of Misha and I writing a song together, we were working on riffs totally separate from each other back in 2008, I think, and magically everything worked together and turned into this rather unconventional arrangement. Interestingly enough, this song remained unfinished until recently, the whole melodic ending was written in the studio and has stood out to me as one of my favorite parts of the album. Misha and I got to finally trade off some lead work at the very end of the song which is cool because it totally showcases a different side of our playing styles and you can really hear distinction between the two of us. - Jake

    CATCH FIRE // LYRICS

Lock eyes like we’re staring down the barrel of a shotgun
    Appear so quickly
Leave as swiftly as you came
Sometimes I wish I had the measure of a wise man
But I set the mood, plant the tomb and bury all the bones within
It sure is something when we all catch fire
    Bodies burning like the sunrise

Stay with me, I’ll show you paradise
    It feels so right
Give me that peace of mind and I’ll give you everything
Just know it feels so good that I could die and be alright

    Alive
We breathe when everything is as it seems
But is there something much more?
Underneath the sheets, beneath the skin
there’s a beauty waiting to be adored
We’re cradled in the thick of it, but too ignorant to give a shit
We set the mood, we plant the tomb and bury all the bones within
Don’t keep me hanging from the mouth
It sure is something when we all catch fire
    Bodies burning like the sunrise

Stay with me, I’ll show you paradise
    It feels so right
Give me that peace of mind and I’ll give you everything
Just know it feels so good that I could die and join the stars
Give me that peace of mind and I’ll give you everything
Stay with me, I’ll show you paradise
    It feels so right

We exist in this moment only to fly
    Just stay with me
Twisting love as we hold it on the inside
    Just stay with me

It sure is something when we all catch fire
    Bodies burning like the sunrise

Stay with me, I’ll show you paradise
    It feels so right
Give me that peace of mind and I’ll give you everything
Just know it feels so good that I could die and join the stars
Give me that peace of mind and I’ll give you everything
Stay with me, I’ll show you paradise
    It feels so right

16th note displacement, and how to play “Blood Eagle”
For Periphery's track “Blood Eagle,” which Jake Bowen and his bandmates recorded for Periphery IV: Hail Stan, they employed seven-string guitars tuned to drop-A, one half step down (low to high) Ab, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, Eb. In this lesson, Jake focuses on the rhythmic figures he plays behind Misha Mansoor’s guitar solo in the song.

  • PERIPHERY - Icarus Lives

    4:26

    Lyrics:

Believe in memories to resurrect me

    Besieged by falling dreams
    Hold them tightly
Adorn my wings to thee, and use them nightly

I'm neither angel nor a demon spawn
Though some will call me god
Gravity is just a law I've wrought

Hear temptation take the sky for all to see
Sheer elation to write in history

I'm neither angel nor a demon spawn
Though some will call me god
Gravity is just a feeble plot

When I said I'd never kneel again
    What I really meant
Was (fucking) pull the pin because time is spent

Unite with ravens on their shadow flights
    As my nocturnal right
Gravity is just a mortal's vice

When I said I'd never feel or see
Love and sight are last resorts for me

  • PERIPHERY - Mile Zero

    5:31

This song started out as a very short soundclick demo. I had actually written all the parts that are in the demo in a Guitar Center whilst trying out the new Mesa Mark V which had just arrived, and sometimes you just get inspired by good sounding gear. The part I demoed ended up being the middle section of the song, and I remember being very intrigued by Mark's phrasing and style and was definitely letting that influence me (even though he wasn't in the band yet). This sat as a very short demo for a while because I just didn't have any other ideas for the song, and didn't want to force it. But when Mark joined up, I knew he and I would have to complete this since he was an influence on the writing. The first riff of the song was something that he had been jamming on for a while, and it is the perfect example of how a simple riff can be just as moving and powerful as a complex one if written just right. We started recording his ideas, and as I was writing riffs to add to his, I realized that my original Mile Zero ideas fit perfectly and fluidly moved the arrangement along. Before we knew it we had a complete song, and at that point Spencer started to demo some vocal ideas for the complete arrangement. When we heard his demos we knew that this song had to be on the album. It has a very different vibe from the other songs, and the arrangement is a lot more progressive than the beginning of the song might leave the listener to believe making it a pleasant surprise in my opinion. The finishing touch was Wes Hauch's solo. Wes is one of our best friends, and we have always told people that he is the best guitarist that people don't know about yet, we wanted show people why we believe that, and his solo is definitely one of my favorite moments of the album. Again we gave him no direction and just told him to do his thing, and he just went to town on that section. An interesting to note about the section that he solos over is that it is technically the beginning riff of the song, but with the downbeat in a different place. Before we ever recorded this song, Mark would jam on the riff, and that was where I heard the downbeat on the riff, but when we recorded it and Mark was playing it to a click, i realized the downbeat was in a completely different place, giving the riff a much groovier and swingy feel. We decided to have it go Mark's way first and mine second (which ended up being the solo section after the fact) and the intro riff is purposely introduced in a way that makes it a bit unclear as to where the actual downbeat is. Fun times! - Misha

I had written a couple really simple, fluffy riff ideas - the first 2 riffs in the song - they had sort of a Devin Townsend vibe to them and we tried to see if we could make them work with any of our pre-existing song ideas. They ended up being the same tempo as the original Mile Zero riffs that Misha had written beforehand, and we succeeded in connecting those ideas in a natural way. It's a really different Periphery song but I love how light and optimistic it sounds coming near the end of such a dense album. I remember us arranging it late at night and not even really intending it to be for the new album, it just happened that we all liked it and felt the album could use one more song. It also has probably my favorite solo on the album, with Wes Hauch being the perpetrator. His guitar playing makes me want to jump off a bridge. - Mark

  • PERIPHERY - Ow My Feelings

    6:08

    Lyrics:

    Lost the way
    Feel the world below me
    Painlessly ascend
Torn away dissolving the life I know
    Grasp the light
    Feel the glow enfolding
    Exaltation
Isolate the answers are truths from lies

    Loss of faith
    The path unravels before me
    Unholy day
    I'm letting go

Through time these cries distort the view
    Hopeless misdirection
We all defy the chance to know
This world is not the one I knew
    Holding tight to our beliefs
Awake to what we have become.

Void the past, create the new
Separate the few because I hold ability to lead
    Astray
Now living through every day on the path between
    The frozen lines

Now no one ever will know about this experience
Will someone for once step back
And gaze upon the world through my eyes

Drawn behind the point of view
    Seal us from the truth
On our own the fear of life decays

Time alone reveals our fatal aspect of arrogance
In life we're not the only ones
Free from the walls I'm alive

    Lost the way
    The path unravels before me
    Unholy day I'm letting go

    Podcast Punk Rock MBA:
    Spartiti:
