    Welcome to MUSIC CIRCLE

Jonathan David Samuel Jones (October 7, 1911 – September 3, 1985) was an American jazz drummer. A band leader and pioneer in jazz percussion, Jones anchored the Count Basie Orchestra rhythm section from 1934 to 1948. He was sometimes known as Papa Jo Jones to distinguish him from younger drummer Philly Joe Jones.

He is generally held to be the most important drummer of his time, mainly because he caused the transition, or at the very least was instrumental in it, when the art of drumming moved from ‘Ragtime’ music to what we now know as jazz – and drumming changed. He became known as ‘Papa’ Jo Jones to avoid confusion with ‘Philly’ Joe Jones who was a dozen years younger but eventually working at the same time.

Ragtime was a genre of drumming which appeared at the turn of the 20th century, and it was closely associated with a style of entertainment called ‘Vaudeville’. Vaudeville music was often played by one guy with drumsticks on a bass drum and a snare drum and this was called ‘double drumming’. There was of course a place for one guy playing the bass drum and another playing the snare but, the advent of the bass pedal in 1909 and the influence of the great depression would put paid to all of that. Just one guy now took care of all the associated percussion sounds (tuned or otherwise) in the band which in those days was frequently more grandly called an Orchestra .

Jo Jones wasn’t just a drummer, he could turn his hand to piano, trumpet and saxophone. By the time he joined the Count Basie Orchestra in 1934, the centre of jazz had moved from New Orleans to Chicago, and mainly due to the influence of Jo Jones, the whole style of playing the music had changed. He shifted the drummer’s role from that of a strict-tempo timekeeper to that of an interactive member of an improvising group.

«Ces deux disques ne ressemblent à aucun de ceux qui ont été enregistrés jusqu’à présent : ils présentent un artiste livrant avec autant de générosité que de finesse et de savoir le mécanisme de son métier en même temps que sa personnalité d’homme.» Hugues PANASSIÉ, 1973

This is one of the most “cult” experimental records in the entire history of jazz. Jo Jones, an immense drummer—a pioneering reformer with peerless technique—here gives us a complete demonstration of his art. Vol 1 is devoted to drumming technique while Vol 2 focuses on the great historical drummers in classical jazz. First released as two separate vinyl records in 1974, these titles were digitized, restored and reassembled in 2002 by Laurent Verdeaux, who also proposed extended versions. This is a vital set: it improves the quality of the listening-experience and increases the historic experimental value while enhancing the quality of the music. Drum-records, of course, but not just for drummers, whether they are amateurs or experts: this set is just as much for musicians, jazz fans, music historians and beat makers of all kinds. • Rufus Speedy Jones Solo 1968, Drumming for Duke Ellington

This is an amazing solo by Rufus Speedy Jones, drumming for Duke Ellington in 1968. Hang in there for the insanity that ensues! Watch for the crazy crossovers while playing trad-grip ... in a freaking suit! Who is your favorite drummer who made a mark pre-1970?

By the way, what a career! Check it: Starting out on trumpet, Rufus switched to drums at the age of 13. He got an early start in 1954 with Lionel Hampton before being drafted. While stationed at Fort Jackson, Rufus played in a quintet every Saturday night at the black United Service Organization clubhouse in Columbia. He later played with Henry Red Allen, and Maynard Ferguson's Orchestra (1959–1963). He led his own quintet during 1963-1964 (producing a Cameo LP, his only album as a leader). Jones gained fame for his flamboyant work with Count Basie in the mid-1960s and backed that up with Duke Ellington in the latter half of the decade. He notably also appeared with James Brown.

  • Satchmo and Papa Jo Jones 1971

    Welcome to MUSIC CIRCLE

Terri Lyne Carrington (born August 4, 1965) is an American jazz drummer, composer, producer, and educator. She has played with Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Clark Terry, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Joe Sample, Al Jarreau, Yellowjackets, and many others. She toured with each of Hancock's musical configurations (from electric to acoustic) between 1997 and 2007.

Carrington was born on August 4, 1965, in Medford, Massachusetts, United States, into a musical family: her mother played piano as a hobby and her father was a saxophonist and president of the Boston Jazz Society. At the age of seven, Carrington was given a set of drums that had belonged to her grandfather, Matt Carrington, who had played with Fats Waller and Chu Berry. After studying privately for three years, she gave her first major performance at the Wichita Jazz Festival with Clark Terry. At the age of 11, she received a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music.

At Berklee College of Music she played with musicians such as Kevin Eubanks, Donald Harrison, and Greg Osby. She also studied under drum instructor Alan Dawson and made a private recording entitled TLC and Friends, with Kenny Barron, Buster Williams, George Coleman and her father.

In 2007 she was appointed professor at her alma mater, Berklee College of Music, where she received an honorary doctorate in 2003. She has won three Grammy Awards, including a 2013 award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, which established her as the first female musician to win a Grammy in this category.

Carrington serves as Founder and Artistic Director of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice and The Carr Center in Detroit, MI. She also serves on the Board of Trustees for The Recording Academy, Board of Directors for International Society for Jazz Arrangers and Composers and the Advisory Board for The History Makers and New Music USA.
