    Story behind the song:

Jon Schmidt and Steven Sharp Nelson were booked for a Piano Guys show in Hawaii. How could we resist filming our next video in the land of Aloha -- beautiful beaches, green mountains, and fresh pineapple?? We went to our Founders and Facebook fans to ask what song they wanted us to play there. Somewhere Over the Rainbow was the nearly-unanimous response. But you know how we are ... we couldn't just do this tune by itself...so in the studio we found a made-in-heaven matchup in the timeless melody from the Shaker Hymn Simple Gifts written in the 1800's (also used by Aaron Copland in his Ballet Appalachian Spring). We feel it's an especially appropriate mash-up because of our profound love and respect for the Hawaiian culture -- a people who are so good at finding happiness in simplicity. As you probably could hear we borrowed a lot of ideas from Iz's version which has become the stuff of legend. This arrangement is, in part, a tribute to him.

Getting a piano onto a sandy beach and then onto a big hill in a famous ranch within the SAME day (we only had 8 hours to film) was no small feat. The only thing harder would be to be predict Hawaiian weather, which ended up being our biggest challenge.

We had a little extra help on this one. My mother, Lynne Sanders Nelson -- a main source of my inspiration for pursuing music -- passed away early in life from the effects of a brain tumor. She was an incredibly-gifted musician and taught me to play music passionately rather than just playing 'notes' on a page. 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' was one of her favorite songs. We finished this arrangement on what would have been her 70th birthday. Somehow she helped. I miss her so very much, but when I play songs like this I feel like I get to be with her again. This song is dedicated to her.
    -Steven Sharp Nelson

Thank you so much to the Kualoa Ranch who bent over backwards last-minute for us and provided us such a beautiful place to shoot. Visit their site at -- when you visit Hawaii be sure to stop by and take a tour -- its where dozens of huge blockbluster movies/tv shows have been filmed.

    Story behind the song:
The American Heritage Lyceum Philharmonic (Youth Orchestra) and its director, Kayson Brown, approached us with this idea. We loved it. It combined two of the things we are working to accomplish -- inviting people to classical music and inspiring young musicians. Steven Sharp Nelson had soloed with the orchestra the previous year and loved the spirit and the talent that the orchestra showed at such young ages (ages 13-18!) Together we developed the concept of Beethoven's 5 Secrets, combining OneRepublic's tune Secrets with melodies and moments from all four movements of Beethoven's 5th Symphony.

We used 5 different melodies from the 4 movements of Beethoven's 5th Symphony (not including the bridge the orchestra plays in the middle). Try to guess where they are and where they come from!

What are Beethoven's secrets? He had many. His most prominent secret that he desperately tried to keep from the public and that caused him to be considered extremely eccentric, irritable, and hermit-like was his weakness. He was deaf during most of his life. Imagine that...one of the greatest composers that ever lived could hardly hear. And yet, he wrote his life's greatest works after becoming deaf. He believed that art itself had secrets that had to be forced into in order to obtain art's highest level. There is no doubt Beethoven discovered many of the secrets of art -- people all over the world enjoy them every day. He was a true master of music, blessed by God. This piece and video are dedicated to him.

    Lyrics

Moon river, wider than a mile
I'm crossing you in style some day
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker
Wherever you're goin', I'm goin' your way
Two drifters, off to see the world
There's such a lot of world to see
We're after the same rainbow's end, waitin' 'round the bend
My huckleberry friend, moon river, and me

  • 05 The Piano Guys - Over The Rainbow/Simple Gifts

    3:45

The Piano Guys are an American musical group consisting of pianist Jon Schmidt, cellist Steven Sharp Nelson, videographer Paul Anderson, and music producer Al van der Beek. They gained popularity through YouTube, where in 2010 they began posting piano and cello compositions combining classical, contemporary, and rock and roll music, accompanied by professional-quality videos. In August 2016 the group surpassed one billion views on their YouTube channel, which at that time had nearly 5 million subscribers. Their first six major-label studio albums, The Piano Guys, The Piano Guys 2, A Family Christmas, Wonders, Uncharted, and Christmas Together each reached number one on the Billboard Classical Albums and New Age Albums charts.

    Musical style
The Piano Guys' Schmidt and Nelson perform live in 2002.The Piano Guys draw on classical, contemporary, and rock and roll in their compositions for piano and cello. Much of their popularity among younger fans is based on their mashups of classical and contemporary songs, such as blending Bach and Bruno Mars, or Vivaldi's Winter and Disney's Let It Go.

Nelson and van der Beek serve as songwriters for the group. The Piano Guys have also covered classical, pop, and film songs. These include: Pachelbel's Canon in D (as Rockelbel's Canon); One Direction's What Makes You Beautiful and Story of My Life; We Three Kings; Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer; Taylor Swift's Begin Again; Home by Phillip Phillips; Swedish House Mafia's Don't You Worry Child; Theme from Jurassic Park; and Coldplay's A Sky Full of Stars (as When Stars and Salt Collide).

    Videography
The group's YouTube videos show the musicians performing in a variety of open-air, natural, and exotic settings. These include locations in the Utah desert, at the edge of a 1,000-foot cliff, atop a speeding train, and at a beach, among many others. Anderson's goal was to put pianos in places where nobody would expect to see them, thereby generating marketing buzz for his store. In the videos, Schmidt is seen playing a variety of Yamaha grand and baby grand pianos, while Nelson plays acoustic and electric cello. Anderson plans to film Schmidt and Nelson performing at each of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Videos at the Great Wall of China (Kung Fu Piano: Cello Ascends), the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro (How Great Thou Art), Chichen Itza (The Jungle Book/Sarabande), and Petra (Indiana Jones and the Arabian Nights) have been completed.

Each video typically costs less than $5,000 to produce, as cameras, helicopters, and other production equipment are donated by friends and supporters.

Most songs are composed of numerous audio tracks mixed together. Occasionally, previous audio tracks are superimposed to imitate many identical instrumentals played simultaneously. For Michael Meets Mozart, Nelson prerecorded 100 cello tracks, including percussion effects he made by drumming on the cello itself. As of October 2017, The Piano Guys have uploaded 76 videos onto their channel. Their cover of Christina Perri's A Thousand Years is their most-watched video, having logged more than 138 million views as of September 2018.

    Personal lives
Members of The Piano Guys are all middle-aged family men who had other careers before the group took off. Schmidt had a solo musical career with eight albums and seven piano books to his credit. Nelson owned a real estate agency, Anderson owned a piano store, and van der Beek operated a recording studio in his home. After signing with Sony in 2012, all four quit their jobs to pursue their joint musical career.

All four are devout members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Each of them served full-time Mormon missions: Anderson in Washington state, Schmidt in Norway, with Nelson and van der Beek in separate missions in Korea. The group prays together before each recording session, video shoot, concert, and songwriting session.

A stirring mash-up of Shawn Mendes’ “In My Blood” and the main theme from Tchaikovsky’s masterwork, “Swan Lake.” Listen to the intensely beautiful back and forth battle between the “Black Swan” of insecurity, doubt, and depression and the “White Swan” of hope, faith, and courage. Which one will win out in the end? You decide as you hear how it plays out.

Story behind the music and the video:
We get asked all the time, 'How do you like touring?' We love it. We especially love meeting the people who have been listening, sharing, and supporting our music. We are so grateful for the opportunities we have, thanks to you. But as we travel along with our equipment, checked luggage, cellos, and carry-on bags we carry a feeling that never gets checked away. We miss our family. We miss home. When we first heard Phillip Phillips' Home we couldn't help but be emotionally drawn to it.

We started arranging this tune by slowing it way down...then speeding it way up...then splitting the difference until it laid into just the right tempo. Once we had the right feel it flowed. Jon's piano licks especially shined in this arrangement -- lending the energy we needed to portray the feeling of heading home after a long journey. The lyrical, placid cello melodies represent a fatigued serenity. The last chorus is the sound of what we feel when we see our families after a long tour -- the familiar smells, the familiar smiles, and the incomparable feeling of belonging...click here to read the rest of story

We want to thank Breck Dockstader, his family, and the Cliff Rose Lodge for helping us with the locations of this video. Breck hung out with us the entire time ensuring we had everything we needed - he helped move the piano, offered location options, and even let us stay in his family's lodge. We'd like to dedicate this video to his father Dale Dockstader, whom we consider a very special fan and whom we all felt was enjoying the video shoot with us, but from the best vantage point of all.
Be sure to check out there beautiful lodge!

If you've read this far in the description you're invited over to dinner at Paul's Home. Please bring an appetizer. (Let us know in the comments what you'll be bringing...:-).

Story behind TPG's Story of My Life

As we began our arrangement of One Direction's Story of My Life we wanted it to feel like each note of the music was a word in a vivid story being told. When writing a song sometimes you just need a little spark. That catalyst came from a piece of classical music -- one that had such a storybook feel to it that we gleaned inspiration from it: Saint-Saëns' Aquarium from his Suite Carnival of the Animals. It's an incredibly beautiful and transportive piece. You can listen to it here:

When we were finished we all stepped back and listened as objectively as we could, imagining what sort of story was being told in order to identify the best places to film. What happened surprised us all. The story itself took over. It was like film score -- but in reverse... more here:

    4:54

This is a little project I did during my spring break, inspired by the piano guys cover of somewhere over the rainbow/ simple gifts. After seeing Steven Sharp Nelson make such an impact on the music world with his more modern cello style of playing, I decided I wanted to do something similar, So this is an ALL cello piece.
All loops were taken on their first or second trial so I apologize for the scrubby sounding tones haha
This was basically me strumming the chords of the song Somewhere over the rainbow/ What a wonderful world sung by Brother Iz (his real name is Israel Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole) on the cello, then re-recording this over and over and over again putting new loops on top as i felt.
This piece was mostly for me, because it was fun jamming with myself haha

Thanks so much for listening :)

    Story behind the song:
Our kids give us great inspiration for our music. When Jon's 17-year-old daughter said how much she loved this song, Jon decided to try it. He experienced a flood of inspiration. Never has a piano part come
together this fast, Jon says. Steve experienced similar inspiration
while composing the cello parts. Since the lyrics suggest a bride
walking towards the groom in a ceremony we thought we would include a quote from the Bridal Chorus by Wagner in the climax of the song. (It is carefully disguised).

As it seems to always go, Paul and Tel didn't find the spot until they spent 9 hours driving around southern Utah the day before the shoot looking. After getting a little discouraged by not finding anything that great, they just happened to check out a little-hidden spot right near Baker Dam and thought it was perfect for the song. The next morning we all loaded up the piano and headed out there to film, but after getting the Truck and Trailer stuck and waiting for the sun to move, we didn't get started filming until that evening having about 3 hours of light. It was so fun to film and play in the middle of the trees!

    The story behind the song:
Each time we write/arrange a tune we take a journey. We have to admit-this journey took us a lot further than we expected. Retracing our steps reveals several factors that made this a reality. As we started arranging it we had serious writer's block. Perhaps some of the worst we've ever had. In fact, one day instead of writing we went around the entire studio with a can of WD-40 and coated every piece of metal to ensure that we were a squeak-free studio. Then on a whim we decided to back away and take an entirely new approach to the song-an African approach. It may seem random in retrospect, but at the time it was an exciting way to restart the arrangement. It was working, but our journey still was on foot until we called in Alex Boye, one of the most talented people we've ever met. Alex has this contagious energy that gave new life to the song and to us. He sings the tune in 4 different languages: Swahili, English, Yoruba (his mother's native language), and Alex's own African scat (we'll call it...Scafrican) =) Most of the words you hear are translated from the lyrics in the original Coldplay Tune. We're huge fans of Alex -- We bet you are now too!

When we had finished the arrangement we all agreed that listening to it was like taking a journey to somewhere remote and ruggedly beautiful. How were we to depict this... READ MORE HERE:

We'd like to thank from the bottom of our hearts, Duane Fielding who offered the helicopters and SkyHawk for not dropping the piano... :-) Half-way through the first day of shooting we discovered that, as typical guys, we had forgotten to bring ANY food or water to this remote location. We had two options: one, wrestle a mountain rodent and harvest cacti or two, starve. Duane, our head pilot, took pity on us. He took off (literally) and moments later landed in a Wendy's parking lot, ordered 5 of everything (sadly, he couldn't use the drive through) ...took off again and brought us chicken sandwiches and hamburgers via airmail. Thank you Duane! Flying in your helicopter was a dream come true for us despite the lack of doors. =)

    Filming location:
    (Southern Utah)

All the instruments you hear are REAL instruments. We wanted to be authentic about this. The following percussion instruments were used:

    Djembe (drum)
Agogo bell (like a cow bell)
    Udu (the porcelain vase-looking drum)
    Guiro (gourd scraper)
    Djabarra (shaker)
    Rain stick
Pangi seed shaker (goat toenails or Unas)

    The Story:
It was 2011. Late in the year. What started as a small town ambition to sell pianos through social media had shown some promise as a standalone YouTube music video channel. We had a few videos under our belts. We had a handful of subscribers. We were building steam. We were loving it! But one looming, sour-faced, obstinate obstacle stood in the way.

    Reality.
How could we sustain this? How could we keep this pace? We had robbed too much time away from family, day jobs; we were living two lives - nocturnal and diurnal - in an attempt to write music and film videos in every spare second. Our day jobs, including the Piano Store itself, saw a sharp decline due to negligence. Reality hit. It hit hard. Our music videos were not providing near enough to provide for our families, our number one priority. They say that the only difference between a large pizza and a professional musician is that a large pizza can feed a family of four!

So we hatched this crazy idea.

What if our genesis, as official full-time Piano Guys, could be crowd funded? What if we offered special packages to people in exchange for their support to help us get our wheels off the ground? We launched the Founders program. We were cautious in our optimism, but we were completely overwhelmed. The generous support... READ MORE...

The writers, Paul Epworth and Adele, described Rolling in the Deep as a dark blues-y gospel disco tune. As we started arranging this cover, the song came alive when we found a destined matchup in the melody from Gustav Holst's classical piece Jupiter-a deep melody that rang out when layered on top of everything we were creating for this arrangement. To make a long studio-story short, it all came together after that. ALL sounds were created by acoustic & electric cellos (5 different cellos) and piano. By the time we were finished we had used 60 tracks.

In this arrangement we borrowed a melody from Gustav Holst's Jupiter Suite from The Planets -- op. 32 -- be sure to listen to his original composition -- it's amazing! The melody we used comes in about half-way through the piece.

Meaning / Story behind the song:
When we first heard Rachel Platten's Fight Song we were inspired by its message. In a world where we too often talk about our differences, we have at least one thing in common. We all struggle. Not in the same way, nor at the same level, but we all want a fighting chance. And we all share in one gift: The will to make the most of our lives. To take what we've been given and turn it into something better could be considered the sentient measuring stick of success. But to do so seldom is simple and more often requires we fight. Not against each other. But against the current threatening to drown the ambition in us.

There is a tremendous purpose in struggle. It is when the struggle becomes so fierce that we must fight to swim or sink. John Newton, who penned Amazing Grace, worked on a slave trader ship and condoned inhuman atrocities. As his ship was on the verge of being torn apart in a violent storm he called out for Grace. Once his feet were again planted on firm soil he determined to change. His covenant was written into these words,

I once was lost, but now I'm found; was blind, but now I see.

Grace is the defining moment when we face and fight a monster poised to define us or destroy us.

This song and video for us were a struggle, but a beautifully defining one. We chose the Scottish culture to depict the dichotomy between Grace and struggle. Who else is tough enough and yet delicate enough to don a kilt in battle? And the Scottish pipe and drum are the ultimate conveyors of melody and cadence. One represents Grace, the other the indomitable fight. Our dream was to film one of the most iconic castles on the Earth, Eilean Donan Castle in Dornie, Scotland.

Grace somehow made this video possible. We had to postpone our trip to Scotland several times, and when we could no longer postpone we had to leap in faith because... READ THE FULL STORY HERE:

    Who are The Piano Guys?
    ____________________________
Since formally introducing themselves in 2011 on YouTube, The Piano Guys – Steven Sharp Nelson (Cellist/Songwriter), Jon Schmidt (Pianist/Songwriter), Al Van der Beek (Music Producer/Songwriter) and Paul Anderson (Video Producer/Entrepreneur) – unassumingly arrived as a musical phenomenon. Over the course of eight studio records, they have impressively tallied 2 billion-plus global streams, clocked upwards of 1.6 billion YouTube views, earned six No. 1 debuts on the Billboard Top Classical Albums Chart, sold out concerts in almost every corner of the world (including Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Red Rocks, Sydney Opera House, and Paris Olympia), averaged nearly 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify, and attracted a diehard audience. Not to mention, they’ve appeared in The New York Times, Fast Company, BuzzFeed, Mashable, and People, were featured on CBS Sunday Morning and performed on the TODAY Show, Good Morning America and The Tonight Show.

Their latest album, “Limitless,” catapulted to the top of the charts, holding the No. 1 spot on iTunes, Apple Music and Amazon classical charts. With over 28 million digital streams worldwide, the newest release from The Piano Guys lives up to the name Limitless as the foursome once again leap past boundaries for the 13-track collection. Limitless features the guys’ take on the latest pop hits – from Shawn Mendes to Ed Sheeran to Coldplay and Imagine Dragons, The Piano Guys continue to break new ground, even exploring the K-Pop world with two BTS covers. Rounding out the collection are two tracks from the box office hit The Greatest Showman as well as four new original compositions, culminating in a diverse new album with massive multigenerational appeal.

The Piano Guys are watched or listened to over 3 million times EVERY DAY.

    The Story:

Ironically this song for us was about beginning again...and we filmed it in a café...on a Wednesday (see Taylor Swift's lyrics). No kidding. But what's crazy is we didn't plan it that way. Just like so many of our songs and videos, miracles made it happen.

We were writing another cover tune and it was flowing like molasses uphill in January. :-) After beating our heads against the wall for too long trying to make it work we stepped back and reset...and decided to begin again. ;-) But like so many things in life the struggle had a great payoff. While we were writing the cover-tune-fail we found inspiration from a classical piece, as we often do -- J.S. Bach's Sheep May Safely Graze (Cantata No. 208 -- you can hear a version of the original here: As we were listening to this piece it called to memory a tune from Taylor Swift's album, Red. Her Begin Again melody and Bach's Cantata seemed so well matched it was a mash-up made in Heaven. We switched to Swift's tune immediately and our arrangement finally started flowing like the Fountains of Versailles. :-) There were even moments (especially the Bridge melody of Begin Again and the primary melody of the Cantata) when the two seemed to play off and echo each other naturally. We wanted this arrangement to be a mix of the two styles -- a pastoral, classical feel paired with a pop-country vibe ... polished off by a bit of Valentine romance. :-)

Then it was on to find a location! We just did what we always do...find a bunch of locations that have potential only to find, at the last minute, that they don't fit, can't work, or won't allow us to film...then, after all we can do, we're gifted a location by a miracle! :-) The day before we were scheduled to film, one of us woke up with an image in his head -- a vision of a green European garden café. Where could we find any living plant, let alone a quaint outdoor Euro-café, in the middle of winter in Utah? A GREENHOUSE! As this blessing would have it, we found a perfect indoor garden setting in a greenhouse with a café vibe that was just what we had envisioned. And it was 4.3 miles away from where we were meeting! On top of that, an employee there said she was a big fan and went straight to the owner for us...who turned out to be a high school friend of Steve's parents! And what day could they fit us in? A Wednesday. We don't believe in coincidences. Life's too meaningful to believe in meaninglessness. :-)

    Video Tech Info:
This video was shot using our new Canon 5D Mark IIIs. We used a technique known as lens whacking to get the filtered sunray light look on some of the scenes, courtesy of our good friend Shaye Scott who joined us on this shoot. We couldn't quite fit a jib in the greenhouse so we used a very long monopod to simulate a couple jib shots.
