    We all got to die

    But some people

    Some people

Some people got to suffer before they die
    This about a man

    He's gonna be crucified
    Some people die of cancer

    Some people die of AIDS

But this man's gonna be crucified

VISIONARY SONGWRITER OTIS TAYLOR RETURNS WITH HIS POWERFUL AND UNIQUE BLEND OF ROOTS MUSIC AND NARRATIVE POETRY

My World Is Gone explores the struggles of Native Americans with contributions from Indigenous frontman/guitar virtuoso Mato Nanji

Roots music visionary Otis Taylor's 13th album, My World Is Gone, set for release February 12, 2013 on Telarc, a division of Concord Music Group, is a lightning bolt of musical creativity and social commentary. Its songs crackle with poetic intelligence and a unique, adventurous sound that balances the modern world with echoes of ancient Africa, Appalachia and more (international release dates may vary).

To call Taylor a cutting edge artist is an understatement. Although his music is based in the blues and folk realm, his meticulously crafted recordings crash the barriers of jazz, rock, funk, Americana and myriad other genres to create a hybrid that Taylor labels trance blues. And that signature style serves as a backbone for his frank tales of struggle, freedom, desire, conflict and, of course, love.

The central theme of My World Is Gone was fueled by Taylor's friend Mato Nanji, the singer-guitarist and cornerstone of the band Indigenous. Mato inspired the entire direction of this album, Taylor relates. We were talking about history backstage at a Jimi Hendrix tribute concert that Mato had just played, and, in reference to his people, the Native American Nakota Nation, he said 'My world is gone.' The simplicity and honesty of those four words was so heavy, I knew what I had to write about.

He calls it trance blues. And Chicago-born bluesman Otis Taylor has honed his art into a razor-sharp, steely mojo machine, garnering critical acclaim for such albums as 1979’s When Negroes Walked the Earth, 2008’s haunting Recapturing the Banjo, and the recent Hey Joe Opus Red Meat.

Acoustic Guitar caught up with Taylor, along with fiddler Anne Harris, before a show at Biscuits & Blues in San Francisco’s rough-and-tumble Tenderloin District.

    4:11

    Artist: Otis Taylor
    Album: Truth Is Not Fiction
    Year: 2003
    Lyrics: I went down
To the house of the crosses
    I saw my momma
    Fall on her knees
    Well she told me
    This man's your father
    He killed two people
    And he raped me
    She took her trumpet
She held it in her hand
    She yelled out:
    He's a evil man
    She said to me
I don't know how people could be, I don't know how people could be so evil, she said to me
    Now I work
In the house of the crosses
I watch that evil, that evil man every day
    I'm a guard
In the house of the crosses
I watch that man, every day
Every day, I run to the river,
    I try to wash,
    Wash away my pain,
Every day, I run to the river
    I try to wash,
    Wash away my pain

  • Otis Taylor | KNKX Studio Session

    16:24

Otis Taylor is a unique Blues artist for many reasons. With 15 studio albums and 12 Blues Music Awards, he has made his mark as an originator of Trance Blues, a style that describes his mesmerizing approach to music and the blues.

As he explains in this conversation, his blues is more closely related to African tribal rhythms, which don’t rely on chord changes, something we take for granted with Chicago Blues, for example. The result is something akin to John Lee Hooker’s repetitive, insistent approach, which itself has echoes of the earliest Blues players like Charlie Patton.

Taylor uses banjo prominently in his music, an instrument that originated in West Africa, and went on to become a vital part of American folk and bluegrass. The banjo’s droning fifth string also contributes sonically to his primal sound.

For this tour, Taylor is working with one of Blues-Rock’s most exciting lead guitarists, Mato Nanji, the driving force behind the band, Indigenous. He also has been a part of the Experience Hendrix Tour since 2002, playing with Billy Cox, Luther Dickinson (N. Miss All-Stars) and David Hidalgo (Los Lobos).

Also providing rock-solid accompaniment were bassist Nick Amadeo and drummer Kid Cage. Their driving and interlocking rhythms are an essential part of the Trance-Blues sound of Otis Taylor.

    Musicians:
    Otis Taylor, guitar/banjo/vocals
    Nick Amodeo, bass
    Kid Cade, drums
    Mato Nanji, lead guitar

    Songs:
    1-Little Betty
    2-Ten Million Slaves
    3-Blue Rain in Africa
