Piano accompanist Ralf Gothóni. This track available on the album Best of Oskar Merikanto (2011). Music of WMG/ Fazer Records/Finlandia. Lyrics:

    Syvästi meri huokaa,
    sen rinta kuohuaa.
    Mutt' rauhallisna taivas
    valoa vuodattaa.

    Min' olen meri, minä,
    levoton, aaltoinen.
    Sin' olet taivahani,
    valoisa, rauhainen.

    Kuvasi, armas, kannan
    nyt vasten rintoain,
    ja sinut itses kätken
    syvälle sielussain.

    Voi laivan myrsky murtaa,
    ja kenties uppoan,
    mutt' sinut sielussani
    vien aallon pohjahan.

    ja auteret kiirehtii pois,
    Kun Pohjolan palkeet käyvät,
    Kun mennyt on yö,
    Kun kimmeltää kesäinen aamu
    ja linnut ne laulelee.

    2. Mä kiireelle korkean vuoren

Probably this is the most famous music with the '' Valse Lente '' composed by Oskar Merikanto .

  • Oskar Merikanto - 2 Impromptus Op. 44

    10:07

Oskar Merikanto was undoubtedly overshadowed by his Finnish countryman and contemporary, Jean Sibelius. That said, Merikanto was an important musical figure in his sphere still, particularly for his work in opera, song, and church music. He was instrumental in bringing operatic performances to the stage in Finland, and his Pohjan neiti (Maiden of the North) was the first Finnish-language opera ever produced. In the realm of church music Merikanto was active both as an educator and composer. But he will probably be best remembered for his songs. A good many of them from his numerous collections (nearly 50 in all!) and from among various lone efforts scattered throughout his output without opus, are regularly heard in recitals and on recordings. Perusing Merikanto's works list, one is struck by its enormity: for chorus alone there are well over 100 entries (some representing sizable collections), and for piano over 80, a body of work that contains, however, not one sonata or concerto! Merikanto typically wrote short works for solo instruments and voice, but his operas and incidental scores for the theater broke with this miniature-like pattern.

Oskar Merikanto was born in Helsinki, Finland, on August 5, 1868. Like Sibelius, his parents were Swedish speakers. The family name, too, Mattsson, was Swedish, which the father changed to the more Finnish-sounding Merikanto. Young Oskar divulged musical talent early on, with exceptional skills on the organ and piano.

In the period 1887-1888, Merikanto studied music at the Leipzig Conservatory. Even by this time, though, he was already active as a composer, with numerous piano works to his credit, including the Fantasia, for four hands (1885) and Two Träumerei (1887), as well as pieces for organ and songs. Merikanto concluded his studies in Berlin in 1890-1891. In 1893 his son Aarre was born. He would also become a noted composer, his father being his first teacher and a profound influence in his life. In 1898 the elder Merikanto wrote the aforementioned opera Pohjan neiti, but it was not staged until 1908.

From the early twentieth century Merikanto worked to promote opera in Finland, conducting and arranging many major performances. He remained quite active in composition throughout his life. Perhaps his most popular sacred work, the hymn Thank you, Lord! from 1924, was among his last. But it still showed his usual mastery and inspiration. Merikanto died in Hausjärvi-Oitti on February 17, 1924.

  • Oskar Merikanto - Barcarolle, Op. 65

    5:19

Oskar Merikanto’s Barcarolle is a piece based on the songs sung by Venetian gondoliers. The barcarolle is filled with aquatic imagery, where the drips, the drops, and the trilling ripples are all skillfully painted using the percussive tones on the piano. These attributes come in addition to the warm texture and splendidly wrought melodies.

Merikanto was born with the surname Kanto, but later changed it to the Swedish-sounding Mattsson and then to the Finnish Merikanto. Merikanto studied in Leipzig under many teachers, including Carl Reinecke. Much of the composer’s style has origins in Finnish folk music, and his melodies, quite fittingly, show influence from Italian-style bel canto singing. Oskar had a son named Aarre, who was also a composer.

  • Oskar Merikanto: Merellä

    5:30

Oskar Merikanto (1868-1924) was a major cultural figure in Finland in the early 20th century. Not only was he a composer, but also a talented pianist, a critic, an organist, a conductor and one of the founders of the Finnish National Opera. Merikanto is especially known for his songs which have become beloved classics and are still widely performed today. Year 2018 marks the 150th anniversary of Merikanto's birth.

Finnish cellist Jussi Makkonen and pianist Nazig Azezian, both of whom completed their master’s degree at the Sibelius Academy, began their cooperation in 2013. Makkonen and Azezian are specialized in Finnish and especially in Jean Sibelius’ music. Over the past few years they have reached hundreds of thousands of listeners with their concerts, records and music videos. The artists have had several successful concert tours in the most distinguished concert halls in the United States, most European countries, Malaysia, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia and Hong Kong. They have also performed in hundreds of schools in Finland and in many European countries introducing classical music to young audiences. Since 2010, the narrative school concerts have already been attended by over 500 000 children. Makkonen and Azezian have also received numerous music awards, and in August 2017 their Sibelius-themed Melody Forest record was the first Finnish chamber music record to sell platinum.
Makkonen and Azezian are continuing their applauded concert tours in the United States in 2018-2021 performing also music composed for them by prominent Finnish composers.

The music video, as well as Makkonen and Azezian's previous music videos, has been filmed by Aira Vehaskari, whose roots are in Helsinki and New Orleans. She left her successful career as a reporter behind her to start her own company Blooming Rock, focusing on making films and documentaries. With Makkonen and Azezian, Vehaskari created Sibelius Inspiration concert that combines videos, music, sound, light and fashion design.

  • Oskar Merikanto - Valse Lente - piano solo

    3:36

Oskar Merikanto - Valse Lente - piano solo

Valse Lente performed by Lauri Tikkanen on piano.

    1:18

When I visited Finland, I only knew dead people. Composers Jan Sibelius and Oskar Merikanto. I found a peaceful capital, Helsinki, and people enchanted, to my surprise, by coffee and tango (passions that i share) and by dry sauna (which I hate since I prefer water and steam).

Oskar Merikanto (1868-1924) composer, organist and conductor wrote, among other works, the first singspiel in Finnish but he remains popular because of the numerous folk song-influenced salon romances.

We are lintening to one them, but I do not know which one. Any suggestion is welcome.

  • Oskar Merikanto: Lied ohne Worte, Op. 37 No. 2

    3:53

Phillip Sear plays a haunting song without words from 1899 by the Finnish composer Oskar Merikanto (1868-1924).
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Merikanto (1868-1924) was a Finnish composer, conductor organist and pianist, who spent much of his professional life in Helsinki, his native city. In making this video, I was surprised to see that I hadn't played any of his music for ten years, having last uploaded anything by him in 2008! This piece seems to me to have the feel of a Finnish version of Faure's song 'Le berceau'. However there is something about the piece that is unmistakably Scandinavian. • Oskar Merikanto: Elämälle - Tuomas Hoikkala & Kalevi Kiviniemi

    2:42

”Elämälle”, op. 93/4 by Oskar Merikanto (1868-1924). Tuomas Hoikkala, saxophone, Kalevi Kiviniemi, organ. Recorded at Sibelius Hall, Lahti, Finland.

Sibelius Hall is one of the finest concert halls in Finland. Hall was designed by architects Kimmo Lintula and Hannu Tikka of the firm Artto Palo Rossi Tikka Oy. It is the world's first concert hall constructed entirely of wood, only foundations and some other parts are made of concrete. Main hall has 1200 seats, and acclaimed acoustics was designed by master acoustician Russell Johnson. Sibelius Hall was inaugurated in March, 2000. It is home of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra.

Organ is a 52-stop concert hall organ by the Swedish organ builder Grönlunds Orgelbyggeri. It was inaugurated 3rd of May, 2007. History of the organ is special: Pro Organo Pleno society, founded and lead by organist Erkki Krohn, raised the money for the organ. Basically organ represents French romantic tradition, but has special stops, f.ex. high pressure Tuba Mirabilis 8', Xylophon and Fågelsång (Nightingale).

Although this was filmed in Standard Definition (SD), video and audio quality is better when viewed in 720p or in 1080p. Video, audio, editing and description by Mika Koivusalo.

Ivan Joanals i Ametller, piano.

Ivan Joanals i Ametller, piano. Romanssi Op. 12 Oskar Merikannosta (Helsinki, 5. elokuuta 1868 - Hausjärvi, 17. helmikuuta 1924).

Nauhoitin sen palan kun oli vähän tylsää koulussa. Toivottavasti en tuhonnut liian sen.

Merikanto voidaan pitää toinen Suomen tunnetuin muusikkoa, juuri Jean Sibeliuksen takana.

Recording from one day practise while I was kinda boring. Hope I didn't destroy much this piece.

Merikanto can be considered as the 2nd most famous musician of Finland, right behind Jean Sibelius.

  • Oskar Merikanto: Kesäillan idylli; Marssi

    4:15

Merikanto (1868-1924) was a Finnish composer, conductor organist and pianist, who spent much of his professional life in Helsinki, his native city. These pieces were probably written in 1900 and make up Merikanto's Op. 16. The first piece (Op. 16/2) translates as 'Summer night's idyll', and the second is subtitled 'vanhoilta ajoilta' (from olden times).
