  • Oscar Peterson - Tenderly

Recorded in the summer of 1958 at the Orpheum Theater in Vancouver, and featuring the Oscar Peterson Trio (with bassist Ray Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis), the set finds the group in top form, featuring a simmering treatment of Alone Together and a pristine take of My Funny Valentine. The trio delves into rarely heard original material, including Peterson's lovely Music Box Suite (also known as Daisy's Dream). The consistent high quality of the performances and the opportunity to hear less well-known songs make this vinyl an essential purchase for fans of Oscar Peterson.

    Joe Pass - Guitar
    Niels-Henning Örsted Pedersen - Bass

Check Doc Severinsen's version of 'Wave':

Check Toots Thielemans & Elis Regina's version of 'Wave':

    Original lyrics in Brazilian Portuguese:

Vou te contar, os olhos já não podem ver
Coisas que só o coração pode entender
    Fundamental é mesmo o amor
    É impossível ser feliz sozinho...

O resto é mar, é tudo que eu não sei contar
São coisas lindas que eu tenho pra te dar
Vem de mansinho a brisa e me diz:
    ‘É impossível ser feliz sozinho...’

Da primeira vez era a cidade...
    Da segunda o cais e a eternidade...

Agora eu já sei da onda que se ergueu no mar
E das estrelas que esquecemos de contar
    O amor se deixa surpreender
Enquanto a noite vem nos envolver...

In trio formations, as soloist and fellow musician of the Singers Unlimited – this is how piano giant Oscar Peterson has so far appeared on the re-releases from the MPS catalogue. The Canadian now reveals another exciting face with this 1969 recording. On Motions & Emotions we experience him with jazz versions of popular pieces from Pop, Easy Listening and Songwriting as the protagonist of a quartet of longtime companions, embedded in rich orchestral colors. She was painted by a magician of the guild, the great Claus Ogerman, who had previously worked for Tom Jobim. The Brazilian is also represented with his standard “Wave”, in which the orchestra builds a luminous tropical backdrop for Peterson’s fantastically dragged phrasing. Peterson and Ogerman pay tribute to another great orchestra leader, Henry Mancini, in “Sally’s Tomato” with feather-light trilling brilliance. Jimmy Webb’s “By The Time I Get To Phoenix” experiences a metamorphosis almost into the classical – Ogerman opens infinite sound spaces here with the distantly indulging strings. Bobby Gentrys “Ode To Billy Joe” cleverly abducts Countryfolk into Bigband Jazz by means of fiery keyboard playing. Finally the hits: from soul comes Bobby Hebb’s “Sunny”, whose theme the pianist here cleverly harmonizes out to then decorate it bluesy in dialogue with the wind instruments. Burt Bacharach’s “This Guy’s In Love With You” shines with a leisurely late night mood and a pompous finale. Yesterday” is provided with a sparkling bossa substructure, while the second Beatles homage “Eleanor Rigby” oscillates between loose groove, deep melancholy and swing. Peterson plus quartet plus orchestra: Enthusiastic detail work also in the popular sector.

From the album Oscar Peterson Plays the Duke Ellington Songbook. I only transcribed the right hand because I didn't want it to take forever for me to finish this. I didn't add the chords (as I should have), but they are rhythm changes. Each chorus is marked with a double bar. Enjoy!

  • Oscar Peterson Trio - You Look Good to Me @ Amsterdam

The Oscar Peterson Trio performing the piece You Look Good to Me at Het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I suppose the Oscar Peterson Trio doesn't require further explanation.

This is a very rare recording. It was broadcasted on Dutch television about a year ago. As far as I know, this video has not been uploaded yet.

I once heard there are many fine video recordings like this in the archives of this Dutch building. It's such a shame that no one can reach these treasures..

  • Mack the Knife - Oscar Peterson 1974.

Mack The Knife - Oscar Peterson 1974

This is a duo performance by Oscar Peterson together with one of his favourite bass players Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen. This was recorded in 1974 in Prague.
The film crew did a fantastic job. Can you imagine having a seat in a chair next to Oscar and Niels and be able to get the full impact of these two magic jazz masters?
I'm always totally taken that even on the small section of the computer screen one can get the full musical impact, particularily if one connects the computer sound output via an amplifier into top notch speakers or headphones.
Just to watch and listen to these giants through the best possible sound reproduction makes it worth investing in such equipment.
I did and it has been worth every penny
