  • Airmachine

    5:11

Airmachine is an instrument that consists of 2 vacuum cleaners (one blowing air in, the other sucking air out) and a system of automated valves opening and closing air outputs (water valves combined with servo-motors). By a Gardena connection system I connect all possible wind instruments, toy instruments and also balloons or other inflatable objects to each its air output (for example overtone flutes, balloons of different colors, forms and sizes, siren whistles, harmonic tubes, toy double reed instruments, car horns).
Self-moving handles of automated valves are also used to strike different percussion instruments.
The whole object, controlled through a MIDI controller by a percussion player becomes a surrealist visual and noise theatre.
Videos recorded in ZKM October 2013, cameras: Christina Zartmann, Paula Reissig, with the support of the Berliner Künstlerprogramm of DAAD and SWR - Festival Donaueschingen.

Pscipolnitsa is a mythical character common to the various Slavic countries of Eastern Europe. She is referred to as Południca in Polish, Poludnica in Serbian, Bulgarian and Russian, Polednice in Czech, Poludnica in Slovak, and Poloznicha in Komi; the Pscipolnitsa is a noon demon in Slavic mythology. She can be referred to in English as Lady Midday. She was usually pictured as a young woman dressed in white that roamed field bounds. She assailed folk working at noon causing heatstroke and aches in the neck, sometimes she even caused madness.

Pscipolnitsa, who makes herself evident in the middle of hot summer days, takes the form of whirling dust clouds and carries a scythe or shears; most likely the shears would be of an older style, not akin to modern scissors. She will stop people in the field to ask them difficult questions or engage them in conversation. If anyone fails to answer a question or tries to change the subject, she will cut off their head or strike them with illness. She may appear as an old hag, a beautiful woman, or a 12-year-old girl, and she was useful in scaring children away from valuable crops. She is only seen on the hottest part of the day and is a personification of a sun-stroke.

In this energetic work, Adámek masterfully interweaves a wide timbral spectrum within an environment full of musical expression.

Within the work's large structure, the composer playfully choreographs exchanges in timbre and infuses a dialogue with infectiously fractured rhythmic motives. - Zach Seely

enoa LAB - opera in the making
The starting point of this music theatre project are postcards of the grandfather of the Czech composer Ondřej Adámek, sent during the Second World War from Theresienstadt.
Because of the strict censorship these postcards, which are all preserved, are false good news.

During two days, the participating singers/performers had the opportunity to work together with Ondřej Adámek (composition) and Katharina Schmitt (libretto/writing) on the initial ideas of the production.

  • Ondřej Adámek - B-low Up

    12:21

    17 instruments - Klangforum Wien

    B-low Up (2009-10)
I started to work on B-low Up when I just had finished Nôise for ensemble Intercontemporain. As Nôise is an intensive piece inspired by Japanese theatre, based on melodic lines with a very dramatic aspect, charged of expression and emotion, I wonted to write something much more lightening and transparent for Klangforum. The name and fame of the ensemble made me focus on the sound aspect. I started a research of sliding sounds inside the piano strings and also whistle sound of electric tubes placed in the vacuum cleaner.
The sound of gesture of vacuum cleaner with electric tubes, switched on and off gave a form to the sound gesture mainly used in the piece: a very fast jumping up and slow harmonic getting down. I searched for special techniques of harp glissando and string instruments pizzicato with glissando using also slides and picks. The string instruments play a lot of natural harmonic scales to get the sound similar to electrician tubes placed in the vacuum cleaner. Each of them has a different scordatura of one or two strings.
The beginning of the piece relates to a breath noise inside the human body, constantly accelerating. The second part is based on waves of soft rhythmical sound getting up and down, each wave shorter and shorter. The third part is another kind of accelerando where the waves of energy become rhythmical pattern. The title B-low Up refers to the aspect of constant going up and down. The
expression Blow Up has a multiple meaning: to blow (air), explosion, in mathematics a geometric transformation which replaces a subspace of given space with all the directions pointing out of that subspace.

    Festival Presences - February 16, 2017

    Program:
Ondřej Adámek - Polednice, for choir and orchestra
Kaija Saariaho - True Fire, for baritone and orchestra
Helena Tulve - Extinction of things seen, for orchestra
Kaija Saariaho - Orion, for orchestra

    Conductor: Olari Elts
    Choral direction: Martina Batič
    Vocals: Davóne Tines
    Choir: Choir of Radio France
    Orchestra: Orchestre National de France
    Soloist: Thomas Ospital

For this new edition, the Présences festival explores new musical horizons and celebrates the work of the great Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho . A work that is part of the spectral aesthetics and whose recognition now exceeds the borders of Europe.

During this evening, two works by the composer: Orion's symphonic fresco as well as his latest vocal work, True Fire, were released in France. These two works are performed by the Orchestre National de France under the direction of the Estonian Olari Elts. The orchestra is accompanied, in its interpretation of True Fire, by the American baritone Davóne Tines.

To these two works is added the delicately chiselled writing of Helena Tulve which will be played the Extinction of things seen. Finally, Ondřej Adámek completes the poster with Polednice, another symphonic fresco full of curiosity and originality in which the Chœur de Radio France and percussionists are invited to play with toys or dishes.

  • ADÁMEK // Sinuous Voices, by Roméo Monteiro, Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain, Daniel Kawka

    15:55

Curious, open-minded, fascinated by other cultures, Ondřej Adámek assimilates every aesthetic whose path he crosses. His works reveal all these influences, stamping them with a very individual sound colour that, combined with a powerful rhythmic sense and solid formal solid architecture, creates highly personal music by no means exempt from dramaturgy. Adámek seeks out specific playing techniques for classical instruments and creates new and original instruments. Here the Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain under the direction of Daniel Kawka lays before us an eclectic panorama of his music, from the ritualised, even mechanised sinuosities of a lullaby to the disconcerting mechanism of the strange musical machines he invents, which he does not hesitate to place in front of the orchestra.
