    Lyrics:

    Ooh, ooh, ooh
    Ooh, ooh
    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Way up high
And the dreams that you dream of
    Once in a lullaby
    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Bluebirds fly
And the dreams that you dream of
    Dreams really do come true
Someday, I wish upon a star
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where trouble melts like lemon drops
    High above the chimney top
    That's where you'll find me
    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Bluebirds fly
And the dreams that you dare to
Oh why, oh why can't I?
Well, I see trees of green and red roses too
I'll watch them bloom for me and you
    And I think to myself
    What a wonderful world
Well, I see skies of blue and I see clouds of white
    And the brightness of day
    I like the dark
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
And also on the faces of people passing by
I see friends shaking hands saying
    How do you do?
    They're really saying I, I love you
I hear babies cry and I watch them grow
They'll learn much more then we'll know
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
    World
Someday I wish upon a star
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where trouble melts like lemon drops
    High above the chimney top
    That's where you'll find me
    Oh, somewhere over the rainbow
    Way up high
And the dreams that you dare to
    Why oh, why can't I?
    Ooh, ooh
    Ooh, ooh

  • Israel IZ Kamakawiwooles Iconic Performance at 1996 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards.

    15:25

More than 24 years later, those who knew Israel Kamakawiwo’ole best reminiscence about an award’s show performance that left the crowd in tears. Specifically during Kaleohano.

The year was 1996 and IZ had gone solo, but the stage was set for an unforgettable, emotional reunion in Hawaiian music history. The crowd rose to their feet – standing for the entire song – and did indeed shed some tears at the beautiful performance.

“It’s a memory you never never forget,” said Moon Kauakahi, a member of the Makaha Sons of Niihau. “Everybody still talks about that. I mean everyone.”

ENG ► Israel 'IZ' Kamakawiwo'ole (Oahu, 20 May 1959 - Honolulu, 26 June 1997) was an American singer and musician native of Hawaii. It is also known by the pseudonyms Bruddah Iz, or Bradda IZ, or simply IZ.
    ■ He became famous in 1993 with the release of the record 'Facing Future' containing the medley of the songs 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' (which was written in 1939 by Harold Arlen with lyrics by EY Harburg, played by Judy Garland and inserted in the column score for the film 'The Wizard of Oz') and 'What a Wonderful World' (standard brought to success by Louis Armstrong) executed in a version with just the ukulele accompaniment, played by the same Kamakawiwo'ole.
This song was included on the soundtracks of several films.
In the latter part of his life Israel 'IZ' Kamakawiwo'ole has suffered from a severe form of obesity, coming to weigh 340 kg being tall 188 cm., which was even more out the contrast between the size of his body and the tiny ukulele played by him.
He died from respiratory problems on 26 June 1997 at the age of 38 years. The whole day was shown the Hawaiian flag at half mast. His body was exposed to the Capitol Building in Honolulu, where more than 10,000 people paid tribute to him.
    ■ His ashes - as you can see in the video - were scattered in the ocean at Makua Beach.
Iz was nicknamed 'The Good Giant' by his admirers. It is also remembered as being one of the last full-blooded Hawaiians: always smiling and optimistic about him was particularly appreciated the love he felt for his land and his people.

  • Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Israel KamakawiwoOle

    4:51

Beloved Israel Iz Ka'ano'i Kamakawiwo'Ole sings his renowned medley of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World. Israel was among the most celebrated of Hawaiian performers with a kind and gentle spirit that is evident in his touching voice. He tragically died in 1997 of an heart attack at an early age (38) and has been sorely missed by his many adoring fans.

According to Wikipedia: The Hawaii State Flag flew at half-staff on July 10, 1997, the day of Kamakawiwoʻole's funeral. His koa wood coffin lay in state at the Capitol building in Honolulu. He was the third person in Hawaiian history to be awarded this honor, and the only one who was not a government official. Approximately ten thousand people attended the funeral.

The 64 photos of Rainbows were selected from Google and Bing image searches for rainbow to help visualize Israel's soaring words and melodious Spirit that still touches and inspires our deep places many years after he has gone. Thank you Israel Kamakawiwo'Ole.

Oh why, oh why can't I?

Someday, I wish upon a star
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where trouble melts like lemon drops
    High above the chimney top
    That's where you'll find me

    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Way up high
And the dreams that you dare to
Oh why, oh why can't I?

Uh uh uh uh uh uh uh Uh uh uh
Uh uh uh uh Uh uh uh Uh uh uh

    4:08

Israel IZ Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole (Hawaiian pronunciation: [kaˌmakaˌʋiwoˈole]; May 20, 1959 -- June 26, 1997) was a Hawaiian musician.

He became famous outside Hawaii when his album Facing Future was released in 1993. His medley of Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World was subsequently featured in several films, television programs, and television advertisement commercials.

Through his ukulele playing and incorporation of other genres (such as jazz and reggae), Kamakawiwoʻole's music remains a very strong influence in Hawaiian music.

    Early life
Kamakawiwoʻole was born at Kuakini Hospital in Honolulu to Henry Kaleialoha Naniwa Kamakawiwoʻole, Jr., and Evangeline Leinani Kamakawiwoʻole. He was raised in the community of Kaimuki, where his parents had met and married. He began playing music with his older brother Skippy and cousin Allen Thornton at the age of 11, being exposed to the music of Hawaiian entertainers of the time such as Peter Moon, Palani Vaughn, and Don Ho, who frequented the establishment where Kamakawiwoʻole's parents worked. Israel continued his path as his brother Skippy entered the Army in 1971 and cousin Allen parted ways in 1976 for the mainland.

In his early teens, he studied at Upward Bound (UB) of the University of Hawaii at Hilo and his family moved to Mākaha. There he met Louis Moon Kauakahi, Sam Gray, and Jerome Koko. Together with his brother Skippy they formed the Makaha Sons of Niʻihau. From 1976 throughout the 1980s, the Hawaiian contemporary band gained in popularity as they toured Hawaii and the continental United States and released fifteen successful albums.

In 1982, Kamakawiwoʻole's brother, Skippy, died of a heart attack. In that same year, Kamakawiwoʻole married his childhood sweetheart Marlene. Soon after, they had a daughter whom they named Ceslie-Ann Wehi.

Throughout his life, Kamakawiwoʻole was obese and at one point weighed 757 pounds (343 kg; 54.1 st) standing 6-foot-2-inch (1.88 m) tall (BMI = 97.05 kg/m²).[7] He endured several hospitalizations because of problems caused by his obesity. Beset with respiratory and other medical problems, he died in Queen's Medical Center at 12:18 a.m. on June 26, 1997. Kamakawiwoʻole is survived by his widow, Marlene Kamakawiwoʻole, and their daughter, Ceslie-Ann Wehi.

The Hawaii state flag flew at half-staff on July 10, 1997, the day of Kamakawiwoʻole's funeral. His koa wood coffin lay in state at the state capitol building in Honolulu. He was the third person in Hawaiian history to be awarded this honor, and the only one who was not a government official. Approximately ten thousand people attended the funeral. Thousands of fans gathered as his ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean at Mākua Beach on July 12, 1997. The funeral and the scattering of Kamakawiwoʻole's ashes were featured in the official music video of Over the Rainbow released posthumously by Mountain Apple Company; as of June 2012, the video as featured on YouTube has garnered over 70 million views.

On September 20, 2003, hundreds paid tribute to Kamakawiwoʻole as a bronze bust of the revered singer was unveiled at the Waianae Neighborhood Community Center on Oʻahu. The singer's widow, Marlene Kamakawiwoʻole, and sculptor Jan-Michelle Sawyer were present for the dedication ceremony.
