  • Bhaskara 86 at the North Sea Jazz Festival • 13-07-1986 • World of Jazz

    1:20:18

Bhaskara is the name of a music group from Indonesia that plays musicin the Jazz-fusion genre. Formed in 1985, with the name Bhaskara 85, this group was listed as the first Indonesian music group that appeared at the prestigious arena of the North Sea Jazz Festival.

    From Wikipedia Indonesia:
This music group appeared for the first time in Taman Ismail Marzuki, on July 2 - 3, 1985 with the initial formation: Kiboud Maulana (guitar), Udin Zach saxophonist, Bambang Nugroho and Didi Hadju as keyboard players, Karim Suweileh (drums), Perry Pattiselanno on bass, Luluk Purwanto (violin and voice), Dullah Suweileh (percussion), and the main vocalist is Nunung Wardiman who happened to study in France at the time.
They performed 12 songs, including Live is too short to worry, Japanese child, Daughter, Samba in Bali and Es Lilin with a re-arrangement. Bhaskara's presence in the middle of 1985 was inextricably linked to the role of Black Maulana, who acted as the show and supervisor producer of the group.

In 1985 they left for the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague, the Netherlands under the responsibility of Peter F. Gontha of PT. Bhaskara music production. It turned out that the performance of Bhaskara '85 was reasonably successful until the chairman of the North Sea Jazz Festival, Paul Acket, asked the group to return to the festival next year. For the second time, the Bhaskara 86 formation has undergone a slight change. Fortunately, Bhaskara 86 got a broader stage than the previous year. Luluk is again the star of their performance. The compositions are considered the color of personality music that is typical of its elements in Indonesia. After the North Sea Jazz Festival Bhaskara went again to the recording studio, followed by shows in various cities in the country.

  • Terence Blanchard featuring The E-Collective Live at North Sea Jazz Fest 2015

    1:6:47

Thank you to MOJO, Czech Republic State TV - NTR, and North Sea Jazz Festival

Multiple Grammy Award-winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard gives an overview with live performance footage of his latest release Breathless on Blue Note Records. With his new quintet, The E-Collective, Blanchard journeys into an exciting zone of grooved fusion teeming with funk, R&B and blues colors. The album is a statement piece with the title referencing “I can’t breathe,” the words of Eric Garner that have since echoed across the country in protest of discrimination. The E-Collective includes Charles Altura (Guitar), Fabian Almazan (Piano and Synths), Donald Ramsey (Bass), and Oscar Seaton (Drums).

The adventurous 13-tune recording zeroes in on several Blanchard originals, an epic-length piece by Fabian Almazan (“Everglades”) and a scattering of covers, sung by soothing and soulful vocalist PJ Morton (a member of the band Maroon 5), including an exhilarating take on the modern standard “Compared to What“ made famous by Les McCann and Eddie Harris, and the soul-vibed and lyrical take on “I Ain’t Got Nothin’ But Time” penned by Hank Williams.

  • James Brown live at the North Sea Jazz Festival 2nd concert • 11-07-1981 • World of Jazz

    1:20:13

This is the second performance of James Brown and his band, that he did during the North Sea Jazz Festival on 11 July 1981, held in the Congress center in The Hague.

This second concert is extraordinary and sees a James Brown that really gives everything to get the audience to their feet. The first concert that we published on 5 October 2017 which was recorded by AVRO Television earlier that 11th July 1981 saw a lame audience that did not know how to react. In this fantastic video we see what James Brown could do with any audience. Also this concert has a different tracklisting including a sensational 'It's A Man's World' in which he pays tribute to great artists who died such as Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and especially to John Lennon, who died some 6 months earlier.
The concert's encore is a raving rendition of 'Sex Machine'.
    Enjoy!

Today we announce the complete lineup of the upcoming edition. Over 150 performances in total will take place in the weekend of July 8, 9 and 10, spread out over 13 stages.

Previously, performances by Pharrell Williams, The Roots, Gregory Porter, Jill Scott, Earth, Wind & Fire, Pat Metheny & Ron Carter, Simply Red, Joe Bonamassa, Miguel, Flying Lotus, Kamasi Washington, Snarky Puppy, and Artist in Residence Ibrahim Maalouf, among others, were announced for this year's festival.

There are some special projects on this year’s program, such as Michael Mantler. This Vienna trumpeter, composer and bandleader moved to the U.S. in the 1960s and made the free jazz album The Jazz Composer’s Orchestra in 1968, with band members like Don Cherry and Pharoah Sanders. In 2014 he made an update, released on the famous ECM label, for which the original score was adapted to accommodate a big band with string quartet.

We will also celebrate the 100th anniversary of Boy Edgar. He became a legend on the Dutch jazz scene; Edgar worked with both traditional and experimental musicians, which was an anomaly in a time when both genres were mostly diametrically opposed. And he was a family doctor, too. It goes without saying that the prestigious Boy Edgar Prize was established in his name. North Sea Jazz will feature a concert to commemorate Edgar by the Konrad Kosselleck Big Band with some special guests.

    Composition assignement
Each year, the North Sea Jazz Festival commissions a promising Dutch jazz composer to write a free composition. In 2016, the honour goes to clarinetist and composer Joris Roelofs. The jury motivates its decision to award Joris Roelofs the Composition Assignment as follows: “Joris Roelofs stands out with his distinctive and unique sound. The variations in his pieces create a contemporary, genuine and mature sound. The listener is taken into a new world in an organic way.” Joris Roelofs will premiere his composition on Friday in Madeira

Pianist Keith Jarrett unlikely to perform again after two strokes - Pair of strokes in 2018 have partially paralysed American musician, who can now only play with one hand.

Keith Jarrett, the jazz and classical musician whose album The Köln Concert is one of the best-selling piano recordings in history, has announced that he is unlikely to perform again after two strokes. The 75-year-old told the New York Times that he suffered the strokes in February and May of 2018, and was left temporarily paralysed. “My left side is still partially paralysed. I’m able to try to walk with a cane, but it took a long time for that – took a year or more,” he said. He spent nearly two years in a nursing facility.
He added: '“When I hear two-handed piano music, it’s very frustrating, in a physical way. If I even hear Schubert, or something played softly, that’s enough for me. Because I know that I couldn’t do that. And I’m not expected to recover that. The most I’m expected to recover in my left hand is possibly the ability to hold a cup in it.”
His condition is likely to bring an illustrious career to an end. It began in 1964 after he moved to New York as a teenager, playing in jazz groups, first with Art Blakey and then, in the early 1970s, Miles Davis, Jack DeJohnette and others. He also began releasing solo material, with 1975’s double live album The Köln Concert bringing new audiences to jazz with its long-form, beautifully sentimental improvisations. It has sold nearly 4m copies.
Jarrett has faced other health problems during his life. He was wearing a brace for back problems at the time of The Köln Concert, and announced in 1998 that he was suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome. Despite those ailments he has kept up a regular schedule of album releases throughout his life, often as live recordings and in a long relationship with the label ECM. His most recent release was 2018’s After the Fall, originally recorded in 1998.
“I don’t know what my future is supposed to be,” he told the New York Times. “I don’t feel right now like I’m a pianist. That’s all I can say about that.”

  • Muddy Waters Blues Band Live At The North Sea Jazz Festival • 15-07-1979 • World of Jazz

    1:6:50

McKinley Morganfield (April 4, 1913 – April 30, 1983), known professionally as Muddy Waters, was an American blues musician
who is often cited as the father of modern Chicago blues.
Muddy Waters grew up on Stovall Plantation near Clarksdale, Mississippi, and by age 17 was playing the guitar and the
harmonica, emulating the local blues artists Son House and Robert Johnson. He was recorded in Mississippi by Alan Lomax for
the Library of Congress in 1941. In 1943, he moved to Chicago to become a full-time professional musician. In 1946, he
recorded his first records for Columbia Records and then for Aristocrat Records, a newly formed label run by the brothers
    Leonard and Phil Chess.

In the early 1950s, Muddy Waters and his band—Little Walter Jacobs on harmonica, Jimmy Rogers on guitar, Elgin Evans on
drums and Otis Spann on piano—recorded several blues classics, some with the bassist and songwriter Willie Dixon. These
songs included Hoochie Coochie Man, I Just Want to Make Love to You and I'm Ready. In 1958, he traveled to England,
laying the foundations of the resurgence of interest in the blues there. His performance at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1960
was recorded and released as his first live album, At Newport 1960.

Muddy Waters' influence was tremendous, not just on blues and rhythm and blues but on rock and roll, hard rock, folk music,
jazz, and country music. His use of amplification is often cited as the link between Delta blues and rock and roll.

    - Muddy Waters; guitar & vocals
    - Luther Johnson; guitar
    - Robert Margolin; guitar
    - Bob Perkins; piano
    - Jerry Portnoy; harmonica
    - Calvin Jones; bass
    - Willie Lee Smith; drums

  • Lenny Kravitz @ North Sea Jazz Festival 2012

    35:44

Lenny Kravitz @ North Sea Jazz Festival 2012
    Rotterdam
    The Netherlands
    Friday, July 6th 2012
(Actually started after midnight 00:45 on Saturday, July 7th 2012)

Here are a few songs I recorded from the nightconcert on the first day @ North Sea Jazz 2012. Starting at 00:45 after a long day full of concerts, the energy level was still high and Lenny Kravitz made sure it didn't drop for a moment. Playing a bunch of hits, a great band and surprise act by Trombone Shorty this was a show to remember.

From a technical point of view. The sound was a bit loud, which meant a slight distortion. Since I haven't come across another audiosource yet, I went with it. I tried to tweak it a little, but not an audio expert. But enjoyable enough I hope.

    NSJ Program description:
Following up on the performances by Prince in 2011, this year multi-instrumentalist Lenny Kravitz is giving a night concert at North Sea Jazz. Kravitz is one of the greats of the music world and last year he released his ninth album. On Black & White America, Kravitz examines his roots as the child of a mixed-race couple. He researched his family history and with his music makes a statement about American multicultural society. Kravitz's has been influenced by many styles and genres, from R&B and soul, to jazz and even classical music. In his own music, Kravitz has one leg in rock and the other in soul. He grew up with jazz: his father was a jazz promoter and a friend of musicians likeDuke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis. He allows promising young jazz musicians to occupy prominent places in his band, including Trombone Shorty.

    Setlist of recorded songs:
    - Always on the Run (partly)
    - American Woman
    - Fields of Joy
    - Stand By My Woman
