  • Newen Afrobeat feat. Seun Kuti & Cheick Tidiane Seck - Opposite People

    13:50

  • Antibalas: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

    14:47

There just aren't many bands like Antibalas. These are jazz players making dance music: Their music is big and fun, and their guiding spirit is Fela Kuti, the brilliant big-band leader and Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer. Afrobeat is a musical style featuring nearly endless songs, mixing funk and jazz, grooves and riffs, with the rhythm carried by not only the drums, but everyone. Everyone — horn players, bass players, guitarists — plays rhythm in Afrobeat music.

Antibalas (Spanish for bulletproof) is a Brooklyn ensemble, and 11 members turned up at the Tiny Desk. Many of these musicians may be familiar to listeners of Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, The Roots, Paul Simon or Public Enemy. Most recently, Antibalas found some fame performing — and some of the members arranging and directing music — for the Tony-winning Broadway stage presentation of Fela!

It's one thing for a big group to make a big sound — and, sure, Antibalas does that — but what stands out is the subtlety of this ensemble; the way the horns weave in and out of each other, sometimes complementing and at other times inspiring and creating musical conversation between players. That extends to all the players, from vocals to guitar. When you start to listen to that conversation and you hear that build in a rhythm, it's so powerful, so full of joy. If they come to your town, drop what you're doing and go see them. Wear dancing shoes.

  • Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 - Struggle Sounds  | Live Plus Près De Toi

    6:59

    4:56

    Out now:

Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 return with a huge new single, ‘Black Times’, featuring the unmistakeable guitar work of special guest Carlos Santana. Based around an infectious mid-tempo Afrobeat groove, the track sees Seun calling for reflection and a collective focus on black history to energise and organise for the future:
“We must pass the black knowledge to the future black God and Goddess”. ‘Black Times’ is the title track from his new album, which will be released on 2 nd March 2018 on Strut.

  • Fela Kuti - Perambulator

    14:37

    Stream/download Perambulator here:

    More info here:

Despite being credited to Egypt 80, Perambulator - backed with Frustration - was almost certainly recorded in January or early February 1977, years before the formation of the band. On the original 1983 release, American trumpeter Lester Bowie, of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, was credited as guest soloist. Bowie stayed with Fela for a few weeks in January and February 1977 and the solo on the title track certainly sounds like him. Further evidence is provided by the lyrics for “Perambulator,” which are a humorous lampoon of incompetent, lazy government bureaucrats, who “perambulate” aimlessly and ineffectually, and waste public money on jollies such as trips to London to study British methods of refuse collection. By the 1980s, Fela’s lyric writing was angrier than this and it is near inconceivable that he would write a light-hearted lyric such as “Perambulator” after the army’s destruction of Kalakuta Republic in 1977.

    Performance - 3 july 2011
It's 1997. Your father, an icon both home and abroad, has just died, leaving the family business in your lap. You are just 15. This is the situation the teenage Seun Kuti suddenly found himself in when his dad, the legendary Fela, passed on at the age of 59, with Kuti Jr inheriting the potentially onerous task of fronting his father's band Egypt 80. As their name suggests, this is an outfit that had been playing supercharged, politically edged Afrobeat since before new-born Seun was even born. He's certainly a dead ringer for Fela, sharing the same wiry figure as well as the compulsion to say what needs to be said. He once took a sabbatical to try other music, but soon returned to the fold. I didn't want to be continually compared to my dad, he told The Guardian. Then I realised that was the coward's way out. I could be a really good Afrobeat star in my own right. And that he is.

    7:05

  • Seun Kuti + Egypt 80 - Night Dreamer Direct To Disc Sessions

    33:51

Album: Night Dreamer Direct-To-Disc Sessions (2019)
    Label: Night Dreamer (London, UK)

    1. Struggle Sounds
    2. Black Times

Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 cut direct-to-disc session for Night Dreamer debut.

Seun Kuti, youngest son of afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, and leader of his father’s Egypt 80 band, entered the Artone Studio in Haarlem, Holland, earlier this year to cut a direct to disc session in a single take.

The first to be released on the Night Dreamer label, the session brought some of the foremost afrobeat musicians in the world together, many of whom cut their teeth playing with Fela himself.

Inheriting both his father’s musicality and political activism, Seun was only fourteen when his father died, and has played with the band for over twenty years, first as a singer and then as a saxophonist in his father’s mould.

For the Night Dreamer session, the band took a day to acclimatise themselves to the recording process, sound check levels, and perform a few test cuts, with Seun was the central figure throughout, orchestrating the band with the assurance of his father.

Playing without the safety of multiple takes, Seun and Egypt 80 cut all four tracks (two per side) in a single take without rehearsal on the second day, improvising with all the focus and relaxation of a band in the midst of a world tour.

The recordings were cut to the studio’s Neumann VMS70 lathe, capturing not just the urgency of the performance but the atmosphere of the session itself, with all its imperfections. A snapshot of a legendary outfit at the top of their game.

Cut direct-to-disc on Monday 27th & Tuesday 28th May 2019 at Artone Studio, Haarlem, The Netherlands.

“I Go Shout Plenty” was recorded in late 1976 or January 1977, but was not released until 1986, as the title track of an album which also included “Why Black Man Dey Suffer.” The release was delayed for so long because the master tape was among the unissued recordings caught up in the aftermath of the Nigerian army’s destruction of Kalakuta Republic in February 1977. Decca Afrodisia, fearful of regime reprisals if it offered support to Fela, halted the release of any Afrika 70 record it thought the regime might deem “seditious.” In the lyric, Fela asserts his right to raise his voice in opposition to the Nigerian authorities. “I Go Shout Plenty” is a typically fiery, mid-period Afrika 70 track.

I Go Shout Plenty was first re-issued on 10 vinyl by Knitting Factory Records for Record Store Day on April 16, 2016, backed with Frustration (the 1983 B Side of Perambulator).

Noisemaker Media provides viewers front row access of the 2013 SummerStage Concert Series. On Saturday, June 23rd, 2013, concert-goers were privy to watch legendary afrobeat musician Femi Kuti and his band, Positive Force and Brooklyn-based DFA recording artist Sinkane.

Olufela Olufemi Anikulapo Kuti, popularly known as Femi Kuti, is a Nigerian musician and the eldest son of afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. Femi was born in London to Fela and Remi Kuti and grew up in the former Nigerian capital, Lagos. His mother soon left his father, taking Femi to live with her. In 1977, however, Femi chose to move in with his father. Femi eventually became a member of his father's band. Femi has been nominated for a Grammy award three times in the world music category in 2003, 2010 and 2012 but has never won.

For 2013, Noisemaker Media partners up with the City Parks Foundation to produce exclusive event video coverage of the SummerStage Concert Series at Central Park.
