The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Neil Diamond - You don't bring me flowers 2008

    Released 1977

Live at Madison Square Garden, New York City,
    here together with Linda Press

    You don't bring me flowers
You don't sing me love songs
You hardly talk to me anymore
When you come through the door
At the end of the day

I remember when you couldn't wait to love me
Used to hate to leave me
Now after lovin' me late at night
    When it's good for you
    And you're feeling alright
    Well you just roll over
And you turn out the light
And you don't bring me flowers anymore

It used to be so natural
    To talk about forever
But 'used to be's' don't count anymore
They just lay on the floor
    'Til we sweep them away

    And baby, I remember
All the things you taught me
    I learned how to laugh
And I learned how to cry
Well I learned how to love
    Even learned how to lie
So you'd think I could learn
    How to tell you goodbye
You don't bring me flowers anymore

    (Instrumental)

You don't say you need me
You don't sing me love songs
You don't bring me flowers anymore

    Money talks
But it don't sing and dance
    And it don't walk
And long as I can have you
Here with me, I'd much rather be
    Forever in blue jeans

    Honey's sweet
But it ain't nothin' next to baby's treat
    And if you pardon me
    I'd like to say
    We'll do okay
    Forever in blue jeans

    Maybe tonight
    Maybe tonight, by the fire
    All alone you and I
    Nothing around
But the sound of my heart
    And your sighs

    Money talks
But it can't sing and dance
    And it can't walk
And long as I can have you
Here with me, I'd much rather be

Forever in Blue Jeans is a song by Neil Diamond which was co-written with his guitarist Richard Bennett. This up-tempo track, released as a single by Columbia in February 1979, was taken from the previous year's Neil Diamond album You Don't Bring Me Flowers.

According to Cotton Incorporated Neil Diamond might have been right when he named his 1979 #1 hit Forever in Blue Jeans: 81% of women are planning their next jeans purchase to be some shade of blue. [1] The song, needless to say, has been used to promote the sale of blue jeans, most notably Will Ferrell, impersonating Neil Diamond singing, for The Gap.

You Don't Bring Me Flowers is an album by Neil Diamond released in 1978 to capitalize on the success of the title song, a duet with Barbra Streisand, which had originally appeared as a solo recording on Diamond's previous album, I'm Glad You're Here With Me Tonight.

Neil Diamond - Song sung blue 1972

This is not a sad song
A sad song to sing when you're alone
In it's way a glad song yes a glad song
A simple tune that simply seems to make you feel good
    when you sing along

Song sung blue everybody knows one
Song sung blue every garden grows one
Me and you are subject to the blues now and then
But when you take the blues and make a song
Good Lord you sing them out again come sing them out again

Song sung blue weeping like a willow
Song sung blue sleeping on my pillow
Funny thing but you can sing it with a cry in your voice
And before you know it start to feeling good
    you simply got no choice

    (Instrumental)

    NEIL DIAMOND CENTRAL WEBSITE -

THE STAGE, SHE IS THE GOD-DAMNEDEST WOMAN YOU EVER SAW. - ND 1972

I’ve always regretted not filming the Hot August Night concert in ‘72, an album so pivotal in my career. - ND (2018)

'Crunchy Granola Suite', the very first song from Hot August Night 1972 - The greatest live performance of all time. Neil Diamond at his electrifying, mesmerizing and hypnotic best.

Electric... his audience falls like plums at his feet. - Tone - Daily Variety.

The lean, sensual performer was A TRIUMPH. - Michael Carmack - Los Angeles Herald-Examiner.

... he moved the audience through many moods from joy to sorrow. - Sue Cameron - The Hollywood Reporter.

More of a triumph, in every measurable way, than his stunning show last summer at the Greek .... Most of all, Diamond gave of himself. - Robert Hilburn - Los Angeles Times.

I enjoyed the outstanding theatrical experience of my life, due to the unsurpassed and almost hypnotic talents of Neil Diamond. - James A Doolittle - General Director, Greek Theatre Association.

    Hot August Night 1972 -
He knocked them dead. One of the greatest albums ever made. Neil came through a cloud of smoke and the audience just exploded. It was the first time I saw him confident on stage. That was chemistry. Hot August Night was the big turning point. That magnetism that people think of with Neil Diamond was born on that night. - Lee Holdridge - Composer and conductor collaborated with Neil Diamond on the film score for Jonathan Livingston Seagull. Website:

The human voice is the most important instrument at our disposal, yet it is one of the most difficult to understand or define. You either hear it or you don't. It either moves you, or it leaves you cold ... it is more than just a sound ... it is the soul itself. -- Neil Diamond 1974.

The 30-piece orchestra with conductor and composer Lee Holdridge behind him. The strings were magical and it was the most entertaining concert I have ever been to. I went to see him 3 times that week and, to this day, I can't forget how fantastic he sounded. - Bonnie Schultz

    CRUNCHY GRANOLA SUITE
    NEIL DIAMOND

I got a song been on my mind
And the tune can be sung
    And the words all rhyme
    Deedle-ee deet deet deet deet
    Deet deet deedle dee doo

    And it don't say much
    And it won't offend
If you sing it at school
They're liable to send you home
    Never knowin' what you're growin'
Think you're growin' your own tea
    Good Lord

Let me hear that get me near that
    Crunchy Granola Suite
Drop your shrinkin' and stop your drinkin'
    Crunchy granola's neat
    Sing it out
    Alright
    Da da da da
    Da da da da da
    Dee dee dee dum
I know a man was outta touch
And he'd hide in a house
    And he didn't say much
    Deedle-ee deet deet deet deet
    Deet deet deedle dee doo

    And like a man
With a tiger outside his gate
    Not only couldn't relax
    But he couldn't relate
    Now he can, family man
    Tried my brand
    Dig

Let me hear that get me near that

It was the third of June,
    On that summer's day
    When I became a man
At the hands of a girl almost twice my age

    And she came to me
    Just like a morning sun
And it wasn't so much her words as such
As the way they were sung
It was the way they were sung

    Desiree
    Oh, Desiree
    There I was found
    By the sweet passion sound
    Of your loving song
Time was right, the night was long

    Remember, Desiree
    Oh, Desiree
    Somehow I knew
I could only have you 'til the morning light
If only for that single night
Sweet Desiree, you made it right

Then came the fourth of June,
    On that sleepless night
Well I tossed and I turned
While the thought of her burned
    Up and down my mind

For she was there and gone
    Without one regret
    But she continues on
Like the words of a song
I could not forget, I could not forget

    Desiree
    Oh, Desiree
    There I was found
    By the sweet passion sound
    Of your loving song
Time was right, the night was long

    Remember Desiree
    Oh, Desiree
    And though somehow I knew
I could only have you 'til the morning light
The night was long, the time was right

    Do you remember, Desiree
    Oh, Desiree

    Do you remember,

    NEIL DIAMOND CENTRAL WEBSITE -

SOOLAIMON - A variation of the word Salamah, meaning Hello and Welcome as well as Good-bye and Peace be with you in many languages. - ND

When rhythm and blues lost its sensuality for me I fell in love with a woman named gospel. We met secretly in the churches of Harlem, and made love at revival meetings in Mississippi. And loving her as I did, I found a great yearning to know of her roots. And I found them. And they were in Africa. And they left me breathless. The African Trilogy is an attempt to convey my passion for the folk music of that black continent. - N.D.

Soolaimon was originally written for an extended piece (The African Trilogy) Soolaimon took on a life of its own when it was presented to a live audience. - ND

I’ve always regretted not filming the Hot August Night concert in ‘72, an album so pivotal in my career. - ND (2018)

    Cracklin rosie, get on board
Were gonna ride till there aint no more to go
    Taking it slow
    Lord, dont you know
Have made me a time with a poor mans lady

    Hitchin on a twilight train
Aint nothing here that I care to take along
    Maybe a song
    To sing when I want
Dont need to say please to no man for a happy tune

Oh, I love my rosie child
You got the way to make me happy
You and me, we go in style
Cracklin rose, youre a store bought woman
You make me sing like a guitar hummin
So hang on to me, girl
    Our song keeps runnin on

    Play it now
    Play it now, my baby

Cracklin rosie, make me a smile
Girl if it lasts for an hour, thats al right
    We got all night
    To set the world right
Find us a dream that dont ask no questions, yeah

Oh, I love my rosie child
You got the way to make me happy
You and me, we go in style
Cracklin rose, youre a store-bought woman
You make me sing like a guitar hummin
So hang on to me, girl
    Our song keeps runnin on

    Play it now
    Play it now
    Play it now, my baby

Cracklin rosie, make me a smile
Girl if it lasts for an hour, thats all right
    We got all night
    To set the world right
Find us a dream that dont ask no question, yeah

Cracklin' Rosie is a 1970 song written and performed by Neil Diamond in 1970, from his album Tap Root Manuscript. This was Neil Diamond's first American #1 hit on the U.S. pop singles chart, reaching the top in October 1970, and his third to sell a million copies. It also become Diamond's breakthrough in the UK, reaching #3 on the UK Singles Chart in December 1970, and stayed there for four weeks.

Married to a catchy and dynamic melody and arrangement, the lyrics suggested to some a devotion to a woman of the night:

Oh, I love my Rosie child —
You got the way to make me happy.
You and me, we go in style ...
Cracklin' Rose, you're a store bought woman
You make me sing like a guitar hummin' ...

But in actuality, Cracklin' Rosie is a type of wine drunk by a native Canadian tribe that Diamond had visited in Canada. Apparently the tribe had more men than women. Cracklin' Rosie was the nickname they used for their homemade alcoholic brew, which the single men, who did not have dates, would sit around the fire and drink together.

In terms of wine itself, the title is seen to refer to (misspelled) rosé wine which is crackling - a U.S. term equivalent to pétillant or lightly sparkling. A Crackling Rosé is produced by, for example, Paul Masson Vineyards and Beckett's Flat.

The single version released by Uni Records in 1970 was in mono, while the album version from Tap Root Manuscript was in stereo.

Cracklin' Rosie is a bottle of wine. This song tells of an Indian tribe in Canada who apparently had more men than women. Diamond said he'd visited the tribe and Cracklin' Rosie was a nickname they used for their own homemade alcoholic brew which the single men of the tribe would sit round the fire together drinking - he thought the name was catchy so he used it in a song. (thanks, Emma - London, England)

This was Neil Diamond's first American #1 hit, although he had previously written a number of hits for other artists including I'm A Believer, which was a 1966 #1 for The Monkees. Two years after Cracklin' Rosie, he topped the American charts again with Song Song Blue and in 1978 his duet with Barbara Streisand, You Don't Bring Me Flowers became his third and last US #1.

This was Diamond's most successful single in the UK.

Tap Root Manuscript is an album by Neil Diamond, released in 1970. It was one of the most experimental albums Diamond ever recorded, featuring prominent African sounds and instruments. The album ended up being a commercial success, with a string of top forty hits. All of the songs on this album except for the track He Ain't Heavy...He's My Brother were written by Diamond.
