Natalie Merchant: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

    27:57

January 12, 2016 by BOB BOILEN

In the summer of 2014, Natalie Merchant came to Washington, D.C., to perform her first album of all-new material in 13 years. She was supposed to play here at my desk the day after that evening's performance. Instead, she fell ill, wound up in a D.C. hospital, and canceled her upcoming dates.

Now, Merchant has rerecorded her first solo album Tigerlily, complete with strings and different instrumentation. That album is called Paradise Is There: The New Tigerlily Recordings, and she recently came back to town to make a documentary film about that record. And so it was with abundant joy that Natalie Merchant finally made it to the NPR Music offices. This was truly one of the most warmhearted Tiny Desk performances I've ever seen. She sang two songs from that self-titled 2014 release and something from Tigerlily, and then Merchant had the NPR audience join her for a beautiful hymn — so have a tissue handy.

Paradise Is There: The New Tigerlily Recordings is available now.

    ---
You've been so kind and generous
I don't know how you keep on giving
For your kindness I'm in debt to you
    For your selflessness, my admiration
    And for everything you've done

    You know I'm bound...
I'm bound to thank you for it

You've been so kind and generous
I don't know how you keep on giving
For your kindness I'm in debt to you
And I never could have come this far without you
    So for everything you've done

    You know I'm bound...
I'm bound to thank you for it

    I want to thank you
    For so many gifts
You gave with love and tenderness
    I want to thank you

    I want to thank you
    For your generosity
    The love and the honesty
    That you gave me

    I want to thank you
    Show my gratitude
My love and my respect for you
    I want to thank you

    I want to...

    Thank you
    Thank you
    Thank you
    Thank you
    Thank you
    Thank you

Natalie Merchant - Whats the Matter Here

    6:48

    From the DVD 'VH1 Storytellers' (2005) - part 3/8
    ---
That young boy without a name
    Anywhere I'd know his face
In this city the kid's my favorite
    I've seen him, I've seen a
    I see him every day

    Seen him run outside
Looking for a place to hide
    From his father
    The kid half naked
    And said to myself
    Oh, what's the matter here?

    I'm tired of the excuses
    Everybody uses
    He's your kid
    Do as you see fit
But who gave you the right
    To do this?

    We live on Morgan Street
    Just ten feet between
And his mother, I never see her
    But her screams and cussing
Well I hear them every day

    Threats like
    If you don't mind
I will beat on your behind
    Slap you, slap you silly
    Made me say
    Oh, what's the matter here?

    I'm tired of the excuses
    Everybody uses
    He's your kid
Just do as you see fit
    But get this through
    That I don't approve
    Of what you did
To your own flesh and blood

Oh I have heard the excuses
    Everybody uses
    He's your kid
Just do as you see fit
    But get this through
    That I don't approve
    Of what you did
To your own flesh and blood

    Well if you don't sit
    In your chair straight
    I'll take this belt
    From around my waist
    And don't you think
    That I won't use it

Answer me and take your time
What could be the awful crime
He could do at so young an age?
If I'm the only witness to your madness
Offer me some words to balance
Out what I see and what I hear

    All these cold and rude
    Things that you do
    I suppose you do
    Because he belongs to you
    And instead of love
    And the feel of warmth
    You've given him these cuts
And sores that don't heal with time or his age

And I want to say, Hi
    Want to say
    What's the matter here?
    But I don't dare say
    What's the matter here?
    But I don't dare say

    Natalie Merchant: Motherland

    4:48

    Alfredo

Natalie Merchant - Break Your Heart

    6:53

From the DVD 'VH1 Storytellers' (2005). Recorded in 1998. Part 5/8. Featuring N'Dea Davenport as guest vocalist.
    ---
    People downcast in despair
    See the disillusion everywhere
Hoping their bad luck will change
Gets a little harder every day

    People struggle, people fight
For the simple pleasures in their lives
    But trouble comes from everywhere
It's a little more than you can bear

I know that it will hurt
I know that it will break your heart
    The way things are
    And the way they've been
And the way they've always been

    People shallow, self-absorbed
See the push and shove for their rewards
I, me, my is on their minds
You can read about it in their eyes

    People ruthless, people cruel
See the damage that some people do
Full of hatred, full of pride
It's enough to make you loose your mind

I know that it will hurt
I know that it will break your heart
    The way things are
    And the way they've been

I know that it will hurt
I know that it will break your heart
    The way things are
    And the way they've been

    Don't spread the discontent
    Don't spread the lies
    Don't make the same mistakes
    With your own life
You never will let love survive

I know that it will hurt
I know that it will break your heart
    The way things are
    And the way they've been

    Don't spread the discontent
    Don't spread the lies
    Don't make the same mistakes
    With your own life
    Don't disrespect yourself
    Don't loose your pride
    And don't think that
    Everybody's gonna choose your side

    Natalie Merchant - Carnival

    5:31

From the live DVD 'VH1 Storytellers' (2005). Recorded in 1998.
    ---
    I've walked these streets
    A virtual stage
    It seemed to me
    Make up on their faces
    Actors took their
    Places next to me

    I've walked these streets
    In a carnival
    Of sights to see
    All the cheap thrill seekers
    The vendors & the dealers
    They crowded around me

    Have I been blind
    Have I been lost
    Inside myself and
    My own mind
    Hypnotized
    Mesmerized
By what my eyes have seen

    I've walked these streets
In a spectacle of wealth & poverty
    In the diamond market
    The scarlet welcome carpet
That they just rolled out for me

    I've walked these streets
    In the mad house asylum
    They can be
Where a wild eyed misfit prophet
    On a traffic island stopped
And he raved of saving me

    Have I been blind
    Have I been lost
    Inside myself and
    My own mind
    Hypnotized
    Mesmerized
By what my eyes have seen

    Have I been wrong
    Have I been wise
    To shut my eyes
    And play along
    Hypnotized
    Paralyzed
By what my eyes have found
By what my eyes have seen
    What they have seen

    Have I been blind
    Have I been lost
    Have I been wrong
    Have I been wise
    Have I been strong
    Have I been
    Hypnotized
    Mesmerized
By what my eyes have found
    In that great street carnival
    In that carnival

THE LOWLANDS OF HOLLAND - Natalie Merchant with The Chieftains

    3:48

For listening pleasure only. Copyright violation or infringement of any kind is NOT meant or intended.

    THE LOWLANDS OF HOLLAND
    [Traditional, Circa 1625, Roud # 484]
    Arranged by : Paddy Moloney
Performed by : NATALIE MERCHANT with The Chieftains
[Erik Della Penna (Guitar) & Martin O'Connor (Accordion)]

Album : Tears of Stone (1999)

On the night that I was married and upon my marriage bed
there up came a bold sea captain and he stood at my bed head
saying, “arise, arise young wedded man and come along with me
to the lowlands of Holland to fight the enemy”.

Now then Holland is a lovely land and upon it, grows fine grain
sure it is a place of residence for a soldier to remain
where the sugarcane is plentiful and the tea grows on each tree
well I never had but the one sweetheart
and now he’s gone far away from me.

[Said the mother to the daughter,
“give up your soul’s lament sure there’s men
enough in Galway for to be your heart’s content”
sure there’s men enough in Galway, but alas, there’s none for me
since the Lowlands of Holland stole away my love from me.]

I will wear no stays around my waist, no combs, all in my hair
I will wear no scarf around my neck for to save my beauty fair
and never will I marry, not until the day I die
since these four winds and these stormy seas
came between my love and I.

    Ground control to Major Tom
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on

    Ground control to Major Tom
    Commencing countdown, engines on
Check ignition and may gods love be with you

Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five,
Four, three, two, one, lift off

This is ground control to Major Tom
    You4ve really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now its time to leave the capsule if you dare

This is Major Tom to ground control
    Im stepping through the door
And Im floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today

    For here
Am I sitting in a tin can
    Far above the world
    Planet earth is blue
And theres nothing I can do

Though Im past one hundred thousand miles
    Im feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell me wife I love her very much she knows

    Ground control to Major Tom
Your circuits dead, there4s something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom ?..

Here am I floating round my tin can
