Catrin Ana Finch is a Welsh harpist, arranger and composer.
Finch was born in Llanon, Ceredigion, and began learning the harp at the age of six. Her mother is German and her father English, but she is a fluent Welsh speaker. By the age of nine, she had passed her Grade VIII harp examination. She was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain at the age of ten, becoming the youngest of its members to play at The Proms. She studied harp with Elinor Bennett, who would become her mother-in-law, before attending the Purcell School, a specialist music school for children in Hertfordshire. She continued her studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London where she studied harp with Skaila Kanga.

During the 1990s, Finch won several competitions for young harpists, including the Nansi Richards Prize and the Blue Riband at the National Eisteddfod of Wales.

  • Welsh Fiddle Tune - Pibddawns y Sipsi #1

    3:50

This is the first of a set of two well-known 'Gypsy Hornpipes' which I believe were written by Welsh harpist Eldra Jarman. I leaned both from Cardiff fiddler (and crowther) Bob Evans. Sadly I don't know the name of the tune.
FYI the harp is the only instrument in Wales that can claim an unbroken instrumental tradition. Fiddling all but died out, or rather was hounded out in a puritanical cull (as it was associated with drinking, dancing, and all things pagan) around the end of 18th century, and has been revived only relatively recently. The harp, by contrast, survived and flourished. Eldra Jarman was the great-great granddaughter of famous Welsh Gypsy harpist John Roberts, and she in turn passed on her talents to Wales' own internationally renowned harpist Robin Huw Bowen

About - I was born, live and work in Wales, and for much of my adult life I have played the fiddle - traditional folk tunes from the Celtic nations. My parents played traditional music too, and growing up my brothers and I lived in a household of music and musicians. Whilst we youngsters strongly rebelled as teenagers (we even had a punk band), it seems that by musical osmosis the power of the trad won out! My brothers and I all play trad now, and over the past three decades have each individually and together been involved in numerous bands, recordings, performances, projects etc in Wales and throughout UK and abroad. As a fiddler from Wales I am often asked by other musos to play us a Welsh tune. Regrettably my repertoire of Welsh trad tunes was much-forgotten, and so this YouTube Channel is about rediscovering and reviving those tunes. These tunes have been handed down to me by my parents, my brothers, from recordings, sessions, and by some notable Welsh traditional musicians (credited in the video descriptions). I hope you enjoy my versions of them, and if so please learn them, play them to others, pass them on, and keep our tradition alive.

  • Welsh Fiddle Tune - Pwt Ar Y Bys

    2:59

Pwt Ar y Bys is a simple Welsh traditional tune and hence popular with players of all standards. I understand that the Welsh name refers to the plucking tip of the harpist's finger - hence Fingering Vamp. In England it is occasionally called Buttered Peas (presumably a phoneticism). As it is a repetitive and uncomplicated melody I have done the mess around and tried to have a bit of fun with it on the fly (which seems to work in varying degrees of success and otherwise). Please pardon the odd fluff!

This is the second of a set of two 'Gypsy Hornpipes' from the playing of Eldra Jarman (which I also leaned from Cardiff fiddler Bob Evans). I found a version of this tune on folktunefinder.com, ironically listed with the title Gan Ainm (Gaeilc for No Name). However YouTuber 'yscolan' tells me that it is Eldra's version of the Swansea Hornpipe.
