  • Myfanwy - Neath Choir

    3:10

Myfanwy (a woman's name derived from annwyl, beloved) is a popular Welsh song, composed by Joseph Parry and first published in 1875. Parry wrote the music to lyrics written by Richard Davies ('Mynyddog'; 1833-77). Some sources say it was written with Parry's childhood sweetheart, Myfanwy Llywellyn, in mind, although the lyrics were probably inspired by the fourteenth-century love-story of Myfanwy Fychan of Dinas Brân, Llangollen and the poet Hywel ab Einion. That story was also the subject of the popular poem, 'Myfanwy Fychan' (1858), by John Ceiriog Hughes (1832-87).

The song, although now considered by some rather old-fashioned, is still a favourite with Welsh male voice choirs. You will find more information regarding the poem in this link :)

Colin Davies was known by many people in Wales and beyond for his love of God and encouragement of young and old alike. He was also renowned for his faithful preaching of the gospel and huge role in looking after and equipping Christian camps for young people in Wales.

Born the only child of farming parents in Llanbedr, his mother tells of an early desire to be a minister, but it was under the ministry of Rev. Jim Webber from the age of 20 that he came to a gradual understanding of salvation.

By 22, he professed saving faith in Christ and was baptised. He fully participated in the life of his church, taking young people to meetings around the county piled in his Land Rover.

Later, following the Lord's calling, he entered the Presbyterian College in Aberystwyth, after which in 1974 he was ordained as a minister.

  • MYFANWY - DAVID ALEXANDER / WELSH CHOIRS / PAUL CHILD / RYAN AND RONNIE guitar cover

    4:56

“Myfanwy” - A popular Welsh song sung by many choirs. Myfanwy is a woman's name derived from Welsh annwyl, meaning 'beloved. The song was composed by Joseph Parry and first published in 1875. Sources differ as to whether Dr. Parry composed the music for an existing poem by Richard Davies (Mynyddog Mwynfawr) (the common belief) or whether Davies wrote the words to Parry's melody following its use with an English lyric by Thomas Walter Price (Cuhelyn), journalist and poet, called Arabella. Richard Davies' lyric may have been influenced by the 14th Century love story of Myfanwy Fychan of Castell Dinas Brân, Llangollen, and the poet Hywel ab Einion. That story was also the subject of the popular poem, Myfanwy Fychan (1858), by John Ceiriog Hughes. Some sources say it was written with Parry's childhood sweetheart, Myfanwy Llywellyn, in mind. In 1947, Merthyr-Tydfil-born author, Jack Jones, wrote a book entitled “Off to Philadelphia in the morning” where he relates the story within some aspects of the life of Dr Joseph Parry, weaving facts into his fictional narrative. The song has been recorded by many Welsh artistes including David Alexander, Ryan and Ronnie and Paul Child. The song is also a favourite with Welsh men's choirs. One of the most widely recognised renditions is by the Treorchy Male Voice Choir. Another compelling version was recorded by the Neath Male Voice Choir. A version has been performed by John Cale, Cerys Matthews on her album of Welsh greats, Tir, and by Bryn Terfel on his album We'll Keep a Welcome. It is also on O Fortuna, the second album from Rhydian, where he duets with fellow Welsh baritone Terfel. Welsh lyrics below for Welsh speakers as well as one English translation. .

    Welsh Lyrics
    Paham mae dicter, O Myfanwy,
    Yn llenwi'th lygaid duon di?
    A'th ruddiau tirion, O Myfanwy,
Heb wrido wrth fy ngweled i
Pa le mae'r wên oedd ar dy wefus
    Fu'n cynnau 'nghariad ffyddlon ffôl?
Pa le mae sain dy eiriau melys,
Fu'n denu'n nghalon ar dy ôl?

Why have I hurt you so Myfanwy
That you should feel such hate for me
Please think of days when we were happy
Even though those days were of so few
I know I’ve been so wrong Myfanwy
But through it all I loved you so
Forgive me now for all my sins
Speak words of love before you go

Pa beth a wneuthum, O Myfanwy
I haeddu gwg dy ddwyrudd hardd?
    Ai chwarae oeddit, O Myfanwy
Â thanau euraidd serch dy fardd?
Wyt eiddo im drwy gywir amod
Ai gormod cadw'th air i mi?
Ni cheisiaf fyth mo'th law, Myfanwy,
Heb gael dy galon gyda hi.

Myfanwy boed yr holl o'th fywyd
    Dan heulwen ddisglair canol dydd.
A boed i rosyn gwridog iechyd
I ddawnsio ganmlwydd ar dy rudd.
    Anghofia'r oll o'th addewidion
A wneist i rywun, 'ngeneth ddel,
    A dyro'th law, Myfanwy dirion
I ddim ond dweud y gair Ffarwél.

    An English Translation
Myfanwy why does wrath’s dark shadow
So fill those jet black eyes of thine
Why do your tender cheeks Myfanwy
No longer with loves blushes shine
Where is the smile that once ignited?
The fire of love within my breast
Where lurks that tone thy voice delighted?
My heart to flee to thee for rest

How did I wrong thee Oh Myfanwy?
To earn that frown of bitter scorn
Were thou but playing Oh Myfanwy?
Whilst golden chords of love were born
Thou art mine own by word of honour
Will thou not keep that pledge of thine?
I do not seek thy hand Myfanwy
Unless thine heart is also mine

May all your lifetime Oh Myfanwy
    Neath brightest sunshine ever stay
And may good health like blushing roses
Bring beauty to thy cheek each day
    Forget those idly broken pledges
That o’er my heart did cast their spell
Stretch forth thy hand my dear Myfanwy
That I might say one word .......Farewell

Dyw i'n canu'r gan hardd gan Joseph Parry (1841-1903) o Ferthyr Tydfil - Bardd 'Pencerdd America' , professwr miwsig Prifysgol Cymru, Aberystwyth, a cyfansoddwr enwog.
Joseph Parry from Merthyr Tydfil spent time as a steelworker in Danville Pennsylvania with a thriving Welsh community. He is still honoured there. On returning to Britain he studied music in London and Cambridge before taking a music chair at University College, Aberystwyth. He enjoyed considerable success as a composer. Myfanwy was his actress friend Lina van Elyn, also from Merthyr. In the film 'Off to Philadelphia in the Morning' she was played by Sian Phillips. I met Sian's parents in 1960 - they were rightly proud of their daughter. Parry was played by David Lyn. Also starring was Connie Booth, sometime wife of John Cleese of the Pythons. She was co-writer of 'Fawlty Towers' and played Basil's hard-pressed employee.
Donny Osmond traces his ancestry to Merthyr and is thus linked to Parry. He sang a well received Myfanwy at concerts in Wales.
My grandparents were married at Merthyr in 1909. They had walked over the mountain from Bargoed, then an emerging coal town with few civil amenities.Seen in the video is their Golden Wedding family group, with Grandad next to my father Dafydd Gwilym Jones. My Irish mother Ellen is to the right of DGJ. I am at rear centre in a dip!
