  • CARNATIC VOCAL | SONGS OF MUTHUSWAMI DIKSHITAR

    1:9:48

Muthuswami Dikshitar (March 24, 1775 – October 21, 1835) was a South Indian poet and composer and is one of the Musical Trinity of Carnatic music. His compositions, of which around 500 are commonly known, are noted for their contemplative nature and for capturing the essence of the raga forms through the vainika (veena) style that emphasises gamakas. They are typically in a slower speed (chowka kala). He is also known by his signature name of Guruguha. His compositions are widely sung and played in classical concerts of Carnatic music.
The musical trinity consists of Dikshitar, Tyagaraja (1767–1847), and Syama Sastri (1762–1827) although, unlike the Telugucompositions of the others, his compositions are predominantly in Sanskrit. He also had composed some of his Kritis inManipravalam.
Muthuswami Dikshitar was born in Tiruvarur (of Thiruvarur district in what is now the state of Tamil Nadu) to a Tamil Iyer Brahmin couple Ramaswami Dikshitar(discoverer of Raaga Hamsadhwani) and Subbamma, as the eldest son. In keeping with the Brahminic educational tradition, Muthuswami learnt the Sanskrit language, Vedas, and other important religious texts. He obtained his preliminary musical education from his fatheHis total compositions are about 450 to 500, most of which are very widely sung by musicians today in Carnatic music concerts. Most of his compositions are in Sanskrit and in the Krithi form, i.e., poetry set to music. Muthuswami Dikshitar traveled to many holy shrines throughout his life, and composed krithis on the deities and temples he visited. Dikshitar is considered to have composed on the widest range of deities for any composer. Dikshitar was a master of tala and is the only composer to have kritis in all the seven basic talas of the Carnatic scheme. Dikshitar shows his skill in Sanskrit by composing in all the eight declensions.

  • Sri Muthuswamy Dikshitar - An Exclusive Vintage AIR Concert - M Balamuralikrishna

    57:32

Muthuswami Dikshitar (MD) [1775 – 1835] is believed to have transitioned on Naraka Chaturdashi in Ettiyapuram, Tamil Nadu.

MD, being one among the Carnatic music trinity, is a prominent luminary in who propagated and personified the great art of Carnatic music. He created masterpieces with a perfect combination of devotion (Bhakti) and wisdom (Jnana) bounded together in aesthetics with the felicity of musical expression.

On this Naraka Chaturdashi, we present a vintage radio concert of Dr. M Balamuralikrishna (BMK) dedicated to MD. BMK is accompanied on the violin by Sri. Annavarapu Ramaswamy and Sri. Dandamudi Ramamohana Rao on the Mridangam.

In this radio concert of yore, BMK has brought out many unique aspects in the masterpieces of Muthuswami Dikshitar. This quintessential concert captures MD as a rare phenomenon, a profound scholar, a poet, a composer of the highest order, a master singer and a natural mystic.

The clarity of the lyrics (sāhityam), BMK’s devotion to the composer’s intent, the purity of notes and the precision in placing them in their intended location of a scale (svara-stāna-shuddham) are some of the highlights of this concert.

BMK offers us a splendid portrayal of MD’s compositions. It does not matter which deity is glorified in a composition; he exploits music itself in addition to everything else.

We are grateful to Sri. D V Mohana Krishna for sourcing the audio from which this concert has been restored and remastered for the sacred work of preserving Muralīgānam for posterity.

BMK begins the concert with Shrī Neelóthpala nāyiiké in the rāga Rītigowla. This composition is classified as one of the Nīlóthpalāmbā-vibhaki kriti. It is in the praise of Lord Tyāgarāja’s consort of Tiruvārūr.

Shringāra rasamanjanri in the rāga Rasamanjanri is the next rendition, where BMK presents the interplay of melody and content. Here, MD has brought out the salient features of mantra and tantra of Shākta school of philosophy. The rhythm is subtle, and the verse is divine.

A kriti is always the principal vehicle for expressing the beauty and structure of a rāga, which has the power to evoke a profound emotion when listened to. Māyé twam yāhi in the rāga Tarangini is one such beautiful example. Rāga Tarangini is the 26th rāgānga rāga in the structure followed by MD. This composition has beautiful alliterations with impeccable phrasing and BMK brings out the richness of Sanskrit sounds and intonations through his acumen.

The Gópuccha yati pattern here is in the string of phrases – sarasakāyé-rasakāyé-sakāyé-ayé.

The phrases progressively become shorter and shorter and taper down like a cow’s tail. The soft and melodious mridangam playing for this song in particular is a treat to listen. This is a song that is beautifully rhetoric studded with Yatis.

Māmava pattābhi rāma is the benchmark kriti for the rāga Mañirangu. This composition gives us a panoramic and picturesque portray of poetry about Sri Rama’s coronation as the king of solar dynasty. BMK’s rendition here is akin to the slow and steady movement of a video camera, panning every detail in a proper light and capturing every emotion that pass the mind on seeing (visualising) the spectacular event of Ramayana.

Among the 25 attributes of unmanifested divine principles, the five elements, according to Hindu cosmology, that consists the universe are the earth, water, fire, air and ether. MD has composed a set of kritis known as “Panchabhūta linga kshétra kritis” for the five sacred places where the Lord Shiva has manifested in primordial form.

At Chidambaram (TN, India), He is Ākāsha Linga (Space or Ether) and the composition “Ānanda Natana Prakāsham” in the rāga Kédara is the main item of this concert. It is said that the ether is the first one to manifest from the all-pervasive supreme consciousness. The sound (Shabda) being the prime nature of space and subtleness being its form, the rendition guides the listener in grasping the subtle nature of Lord Shiva, the omnipresent Self. The rāgalāpana, kriti, swara-vinyāsam, followed by a laya-vinyāsam in this rendition portray the subtleness of Divine nature through the sound that’s again the prime quality of Ākāsha.

When we were on a tour, searching for vintage music recordings, we chanced upon some important documents penned by BMK’s guru, Sri. Paruppalli Ramakrishnayya Pantulu (PRP). These handwritten notes contained the list of songs, that were to be song for AIR broadcast dates back to 1940 and 1941. Many of these lists include Shrī Neelóthpala nāyiiké in the rāga Rītigowla and the concerts ending with Nīlakantham bhajé in the rāga Kédāragowla. BMK too, in this radio broadcast concludes his concert with a brief and brisk rendition of Nīlakantham bhajé with a captivating Chitta-swara for the Madhyamkāla sāhityam.

Wishing you and your families, an illuminating Deepavali of inner Self!

The Hindu reviewing this said Of the thematic compositions of Muthuswami Dikshitar, Kamalamba Navavarna Kritis have a special appeal to musicians as offering a challenge in rendering them competently. The gait of the compositions is ponderous and a musician, in enunciating sahitya, has to be extra careful as the words are deemed to contain the efficacious benefits of an incantation of mantras. Mani Krishnaswami who has rendered them in two cassettes, has lived upto her reputation as one for whom sahitya is of as much importance as the musical garb in which kritis are clothed. Whether the song is in Tamil, Telugu or Sanskrit, Mani always bestows extra attention to sahitya.

  • Muthuswami Dikshitars Sarasa Dala Nayana in ragam Khamas | Carnatic Classical

    6:19

To invite this group for a live concert, please visit or email info@indianraga.com

Divine music offered with devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Vishnu.

This soulful rendition begins with the evocative Viruttam Pachai ma malai pol meni written by Thondaradippodi Azhwar, part of Divya Prabhandham the four thousand Tamil verses compiled in praise of Lord Vishnu.  The Viruttam is followed by the beautiful Muthuswamy Dikshitar composition Sarasa Dala Nayana in ragam Khamas Chaturasra Jhampe talam. “One whose eyes are like lotus petals, O remover of distress…..O Hari Govinda…..protect me” …divine music that describes the beauty, the strength, the compassion of Lord Vishnu.

This song, characteristic of Dikshitar compositions, contains the raga mudra where the raga name is woven into the lyrics. It also includes ‘swaraksharas’ or musical notes that are the same as some syllables of the lyrics.  Team Kamaladeepthi Vempati (Vocal), Sindhuja Bhakthavatsalam (Vocal), Kavitha Jayaraman (Veena) and  Ananth Kumar (Mridangam) come together to perform this piece with dedication.

  • Sri Satyanarayanam- Subhapanthuvarali-Muthuswami Dikshitar

    8:09

Founded in September 2006 by Sangeetha Bhusanam R.Amaravathy with the aim of putting into practice her beliefs concerning the Indian Music & Dance. Rhythem Music's aim was -- then as now -- to offer, on the one hand, programmes of genuine quality to audiences, and, on the other, to true artists, a forum where their talents could be exhibited most effectively -- through proper organisation and aesthetic presentation.

As the world became a network of information sharing, Rhythem Music kept pace by creating a unique website, Started in 2006, this was one of the first on-line resources for the Indian classical Music & Dance. Thousands of interested readers, school students, artists and scholars have benefited from this site. It is perhaps the fisrt website to feature comprehensive lists of performers in in the discipline of Music & Dance with contact details. This allowed artists who could not create their own websites to reap the benefit of having a presence on the Internet.

Rhhythem Music began its activities with maiden launch of its fisrt Audio album on Carnatic Music by the eminent Violinist M.S.Gopalakrishna at NARADA GANA SABHA Chennai. The inaugural speech was followed by a Carnatic vocal and Veena concert.

Since its inception in 2006 Rhythem Music has released more than 65 Albums and has organised innumerable national festivals of classical arts.

Oh Lord Nandagopala, Mukunda, Gokula Nandana, you sported on the banks of the river Yamuna.

Oh Madhava, you are the one who held the Mandara mount. Oh Muralidhara, Madhusudana, oh Hari, protect me.

He has a smiling face, beautiful feet, lotus-like eyes, and protects those who seek refuge in him. He is adorned with yellow silk, and reclines on a serpent couch. He eradicates the evils of the Kali age, and is the fountain of mercy. He is worshipped by a host of sages, and gives joy to Guruguha. He has Vaikuntha as his abode, and is steeped in bliss forever. He held aloft the Govarddhana mountain, and is paramour of the Gopikas. He is Govinda.
