  • Rare Essence: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

    16:05

Suraya Mohamed | July 19, 2017 — Dominated by drive and momentum, heavy on percussion and bass, go-go music is all about the beat. Live, songs can continue on for half an hour, as the percussion continues to simmer and punctuate between and across different pieces. That's why we call it go-go, because it goes on and goes on and goes on, as guitarist Andre Johnson put it in a documentary film.

While the Tiny Desk doesn't allow for that kind of expansive get-down — though they did play seven songs — this visit by Rare Essence perfectly encapsulated the genre's incomparable meld of soul, R&B and, most importantly, funk (with a dash of Afro-Cuban influence).

Rare Essence emerged not long after go-go itself did, beginning as a group in 1976 in Washington D.C. Ever since the group has kept a steady schedule playing around town and around the world — they have ten shows scheduled for the month of July alone.

At the Tiny Desk, the group's closer brought everyone home — much too soon, no matter how late — with Overnight Scenario, a classic. Sing along when you hear it...

Three in the morning, the Pancake House
Four in the morning, we'll be rolling to my house
Five in the morning, the lights go out
Six in the morning, you can hear her start to shout
Seven in the morning, she'll be calling a cab, calling a cab...
Eight in the morning, talking 'bout the fun she had
Nine in the morning, she just getting home
Talking about the overnight scenario, scenario...

Originating out of Washington, DC, Capital City Music is a worship ministry made up of artists, dreamers, and creatives. We exist in partnership with ministries and churches across DC and beyond. For many years, we have gathered people in different cities and communities with the desire to see worship pave the way for times of ministry. This vision eventually developed into recording live worship albums.

  • Taylor Swift: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

    28:59

Watch Taylor Swift play The Man, Lover, Death by a Thousand Cuts and All Too Well at the Tiny Desk.

    More from NPR Music:
    Tiny Desk Concerts:
    Twitter:
    Instagram:

Oct. 15, 2019 | Lyndsey McKenna -- As Taylor Swift settled in for her Tiny Desk, she looked out at the 300-plus NPR employees and guests. Wow! This is a lot of people in a tiny office! she said. I love it! Then, after introducing herself, she explained her objective: I just decided to take this as an opportunity to show you guys how the songs sounded when I first wrote them.

It should come as no surprise that someone who commands stadium stages could hold court in NPR Music's corner of our Washington, D.C., office — specifically, behind Bob Boilen's desk — but Swift was truly at home in stripped-down, solo-session mode. (It's just me. There's no dancers, unfortunately, she quipped.)

Opening with an acoustic rendition of The Man, from her 2019 album, Lover, Swift delivered a critique of gender double standards with a sense of humor (and a perfectly deployed hair toss), Leonardo DiCaprio name check and all. Turning to the piano with a smile for Lover's title track, she explained the guitar-string scars of the song's bridge. Picking up the guitar again for Death by a Thousand Cuts, Swift confronted a question that she says has haunted her career: What will you ever do if you get happy? Across the song's run-on thoughts and relentless searching, Swift offered an answer: She'll continue to excel at crafting superb story-songs.

Though most Tiny Desk concerts stop at three songs, we couldn't turn down the chance to hear All Too Well from Swift's 2012 album, Red. Routinely cited by critics and fans alike as a favorite, the beloved track has become the stuff of Swiftie legends, striking in its specificity (that scarf!) and relatable in a way that anyone who has loved and lost can understand.

That sense of connection is at the heart of it all. Some 800 Tiny Desk concerts since we published our very first back in April 2008, the aim remains the same: In the midst of meetings and conference calls, Tiny Desk concerts offer respite from the workday and opportunities to see artists reimagine their work in a strange setting. It's always special, but on some days, it feels downright magical. Watching Taylor Swift perform — and then interact with co-workers and guests who have grown up with her — was simply enchanting.

  • Trouble Funk: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

    18:24

May 30, 2018 | Abby O'Neill -- Go-go — Washington D.C.'s regional twist on funk — reigned in the DMV during the 1980s, and one of the scene's signature acts was Trouble Funk. More than 30 years later, the collective, led by Big Tony Fisher, still fills sold-out venues with heavyweight percussion and call-and-response lyrics. Trouble Funk concerts are bona fide jam sessions, so I was determined to squeeze their unrelenting rhythms behind the Tiny Desk.

With 12 members sandwiched into a cramped space, the electricity was almost tangible as they launched into the 1982 banger Pump Me Up, a song sampled in Public Enemy's protest anthem Fight the Power and M/A/R/R/S's dance classic Pump Up The Volume. The drum breaks here are definitive go-go and it was hard to discern who was having more fun: the band or the audience. On Grip It, buoyant and staccato horn melodies propelled the song forward, while Let's Get Small featured Trouble Funk's classic call-and-response chants. Drop the Bomb, another notable gem from their lengthy discography, kept the energy level high and Don't Touch That Stereo was all raw, unencumbered funk. To conclude the set, they segued into E Flat Boogie, their first hit in 1979, with Big Tony's vocals front and center.

While the late Chuck Brown is often acknowledged as the godfather of go-go (and you can see why during his Tiny Desk), Trouble Funk was a key part of the sound's second wave. In a city often interrupted by the transient revolving door of government officials and federal staffers, the funky artform is woven into the fabric of this city and inspires a spirit of dance, rhythm and sheer joy.

  • Diana Ross - Its My Turn

    2:21

I can't cover up my feelings...I'm excited to finally post It's My Turn. This song of affirmation and empowerment was long before Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive, Katy Perry's Roar and Sara Bareilles, Brave. It came at a time Diana Ross was looking for a new direction, away from Motown and away from Berry Gordy (who was controlling her every move). It was bold move on her part but this was a different kind of love song that fans are usually use to from the Queen of Motown. It was the title theme song of the movie starring Michael Douglas and Jill Claybough.

On this night in the Kennedy Center, Diana Ross gave a beautiful rendition of her hit song and the audience loved it.

  • Grateful Dead - Feel Like A Stranger

    10:18

Bob Weir and John Barlow's wonderful 1980 song was mostly played as a show-opener, and allowed the Dead to jam powerfully to start the show. Like Shakedown Street, Feel Like A Stranger had a long, extended jam after the vocals, and gave Jerry unlimited space to explore his musical ideas. Always a favourite opener of mine, and this one features Bruce on accordion more than a year after he'd left active touring with the Grateful Dead. - David Lemieux

  • BEST OF HENRI DIKONGUE - DJ ERIC

    44:52

    Ok my friends, lovers of good music, behold these tunes from one of the gems of Cameroon and African music - Henri Dikongue ;
Henri Dikongué (born 1967) is a Cameroonian singer and guitarist.[1]
Dikongué was born in Douala to a family of musicians. He attended a school music in Paris, where he attempted unsuccessfully to release a first album. He started a music/acting troupe and worked with actor Martin Yog and musicians Alfred M'Bongo and Manuel Wandji, as well as Maranatha, a South African chorus.
After finally choosing to settle in Paris in 1989, he perfected his skills with classical guitar and collaborated with African musicians such as Manu Dibango and Papa Wemba. In 1995 he released his first album, Wa. His music mixes elements from makossa, bikutsi, reggae and rumba. He sings in his native tongue, Duala.
His second album, C'est la vie, was released in 1997 (in the US under the Tinder Records label) and sold about 10,000 copies. Between 1997 and 1998, he toured Germany and the United States.
His third album, N'oublie jamais, was released in 2000. This album incorporated more musical styles such as reggae and flamenco, but the album wasn't as successful as his previous works.
