    You're a good soldier
    Choosing your battles
    Pick yourself up
    And dust yourself off
    Get back in the saddle

    You're on the front line
    Everyone's watching
    You know it's serious
    We're getting closer
    This isn't over

    The pressure's on
    You feel it
    But you got it all
    Believe it

When you fall get up, oh oh
If you fall get up, eh eh

You knew that you were doing wrong
    To love another woman's man
You're always there when he needs you
    Where is he now

    Mama of his baby
    Baby he's killing your love
    Are you really happy

So let him go let him go let him go
    To his children
    To his family
So let him go let him go let him go
    To his children
    Give him freedom

So take a good look at yourself
    Don't you feel guilty
You're only his part-time girl does this make you worry

    About the Ndlovu Youth Choir:
Can participation in a music program change the lives of even the world’s most disadvantaged children? The choristers of the Ndlovu Youth Choir are living proof that it certainly can. This vibrant youth choral ensemble chants, harmonizes, and tip-toe-taps their way through a powerful 11-language repertoire that includes a sampling of all things South Africa: from isicathamiya (is-caht-a-MEE-ya), the a cappella genre accompanied only by body percussion, made famous by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, to ancient tribal chants, contemporary gospel, Afro-pop and Afro-jazz from the repertoires of Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba, and uplifting choral music written exclusively for the choir.
Founded in 2009, this exuberant group has toured southern Africa and Europe with their multi-sensorial performances to significant critical and audience acclaim. The members are selected by audition from the young people from the Ndlovu Care Group, a community program providing healthcare, early childhood education, after-school activities, and more to rural Moutse, Limpopo, South Africa. Program directors find that, because of the time commitment of the choir, as well as the values of self-discipline, self- confidence, and leadership that participation imbues, choristers have lower rates of drug use, delinquency, and teen pregnancy than their peers.
It’s about more than just staying out of trouble, though. The choir offers an early pathway to artistic and professional achievement that is so often only available to children from affluent backgrounds, but it also offers a connection to the children’s ancestral roots and allows them to share those cultural roots with the world. It’s a profound gift in both directions, and one which the singers themselves say fills them with hope: for a better life and for a better world.

    About Wouter Kellerman
Globe-trotting flutist and composer Wouter Kellerman received a 2015 Grammy® Award for his collaborative album 'Winds of Samsara'.
His next album 'Love Language' debuted at nr. 1 on the World Music Billboard charts and received a Grammy® nomination for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, Kellerman’s second nomination in as many years.
Kellerman has also been recognised at home, winning seven SAMA’s (South African equivalent to the Grammy), reinforcing his status as one of South Africa’s foremost musicians. Delighting audiences with a magnetic alchemy of warmth and technical mastery, Kellerman finds his inspiration in the spaces between cultures and countries, genres and disciplines.
Passionate about teaching and empowering young people, Kellerman has sponsored the SOS Children’s Village for the past 17 years.

  • Music and apartheid in South Africa

Some prominent South African musicians discuss the role of music and theatre in publicising black consciousness and anti-apartheid movements in their homeland. There are excellent performances of Nkosi sikelel' iAfrika by Family Factory and the Soweto String Quartet, and excerpts of interviews with Hugh Masekela, Michael Masote and others.

Between 1948 and 1991, South Africa was a nation of diverse ethnicities and tribal groups, however a stringent series of laws and regulations - collectively referred to as apartheid - kept whites in positions of political power and economic affluence, while black South Africans were denied voting rights, political activism, education, freedom of movement and association. One of the reasons that apartheid was so effective and long-lasting was that it suppressed resistance and ideology and exploited divisions amongst the native Africans themselves. Music, dance, theatre and other cultural expressions played a pivotal role in uniting Africans and the world against apartheid and inspiring hope that it could and would be overcome. Nkosi sikelel' iAfrika, a song with a beautiful melody and peaceful and uplifting lyrics, became the best known songs of the anti-apartheid movement - and those who sang it in public were liable to be persecuted or arrested. It now constitutes the first part of South Africa's national anthem, along with an excerpt of the 'old' Afrikaans anthem The Call of South Africa, and some newly-devised English lyrics.

  • For friends, some Folk music from South Africa in 70s

I'm Tony Hay & I've recently made contact with quite a few friends, acquaintances & relatives from my young days back in South Africa many of whom followed the folk music scene in Durban. Although I was a folk singer in the Natal Folk Music Association (NAFMA), I was better known as a recording/sound engineer. I made lots of recordings over those years & I've put together this music video for people to remember some of the music of those days. The video is made of audio clips of just some the recordings I made & the video images are made of old photos only & I've downgraded picture quality in order to keep the sound quality better. Please let me know if I've made any mistakes in all the annotations in the video.

Caroline Blundell has informed me that the song Crazy Man Michael is sung by her and NOT Wendy Coleman. She is accompanied on guitar by John van Nierop. My apologies for this error.

I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
    She's coming in twelve-thirty flight
Her moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say: Hurry boy, it's waiting there for you

It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had
