Wake up Angelita, your mama just turned off the light
Manolo is already waiting by the old water-pipe
Her shoes in one hand, she carefully walks down the stairs
Holding her breath 'cause there's danger and love in the air
Your papa will beat him if he ever finds out
Begging the Virgin won't help when you hear Manolito shout
    (Manolito shout)
He's already standing under the starlit sky
You run to his arms and you laugh and you cry as he hold you tight
He says, he'll be leaving you soon and you beg him to stay
But he wants to make it somewhere in the U.S.A.
And though he'll be far he promises he'll write every day
When time will be right, he'll come back and he'll take you away

Your papa don't like him, he says he's no good
He steals and he fights and he never behaves, like a young man should
    (Like a young man should)

Angelita she knows, he's not that bad inside
    (Don't cry Angelita)
She takes the medal, she wears on a chain and presses it into his palm
(He'll come back and take you)

  • The Classical Music of Puerto Rico

    Welcome to my Channel!

Pianist Pablo Cintron performs Danzas By J. M Campos and Verde Luz (El Topo). Arr. by P. Cintron

By the late 1700s the country dance (French contredanse, Spanish contradanza) had come to thrive as a popular recreational dance, both in courtly and festive vernacular forms, throughout much of Europe, replacing dances such as the minuet. By 1800 a creolized form of the genre, called contradanza, was thriving in Cuba, and the genre also appears to have been extant, in similar vernacular forms,

in Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and elsewhere, although documentation is scanty. By the 1850s, the Cuban contradanza—increasingly referred to as danza—was flourishing both as a salon piano piece, or as a dance-band item to accompany social dancing, in a style evolving from collective figure dancing (like a square dance) to independent couples dancing ballroom-style (like a waltz, but in duple rather than ternary rhythm). According to local chroniclers, in 1845 a ship arrived from Havana, bearing, among other things, a party of youths who popularized a new style of contradanza/danza, confusingly called merengue. This style subsequently became wildly popular in Puerto Rico, to the extent that in 1848 it was banned by the priggish Spanish governor Juan de la Pezuela. This prohibition, however, does not seem to have had much lasting effect, and the newly invigorated genre—now more commonly referred to as danza—went on to flourish in distinctly local forms. As in Cuba, these forms included the musics played by dance ensembles as well as sophisticated light-classical items for solo piano (some of which could subsequently be interpreted by dance bands).

The danza as a solo piano idiom reached its greatest heights in the music of Manuel Gregorio Tavárez (1843–83), whose compositions have a grace and grandeur closely resembling the music of Chopin, his model. Achieving greater popularity were the numerous danzas of his follower, Juan Morel Campos (1857–96), a bandleader and extraordinarily prolific composer who, like Tavárez, died in his youthful prime (but not before having composed over 300 danzas).

By Morel Campos' time, the Puerto Rican danza had evolved into a form quite distinct from that of its Cuban (not to mention European) counterparts. Particularly distinctive was its form consisting of an initial paseo, followed by two or three sections (sometimes called merengues), which might feature an arpeggio-laden obbligato melody played on the tuba-like bombardino (euphonium). Many danzas achieved island-wide popularity, including the piece La Borinqueña, which is the national anthem of Puerto Rico. Like other Caribbean creole genres such as the Cuban danzón, the danzas featured the insistent ostinato called cinquillo (roughly, ONE-two-THREE-FOUR-five-SIX-SEVEN-eight, repeated).

The danza remained vital until the 1920s, but after that decade its appeal came to be limited to the Hispanophilic elite. The danzas of Morel Campos, Tavárez, José Quintón, and a few others are still performed and heard on various occasions, and a few more recent composers have penned their own idiosyncratic forms of danzas, but the genre is no longer a popular social dance idiom.

For the last 40 years Eddie Palmieri has enriched Latin music with his imagination. It is difficult to say he had one good year above all others
because Palmieri has improved with each recording, an indication that he hasn't reached his peak. I'm not surprised that others are envious of him.
Many dancers say that he is the best. Many say that he is the sun of Latin
music, the most powerful in the world. He is reverentially referred to as the Messiah but I see him as Latin music's leading astronaut gliding in a
spaceship over the musical heavens, searching, listening, imagining new
ideas and sounds that will enable Latin music to branch out unto another dimension and perhaps make it universally accepted. --Max Salazar
In 1973, Mango Records released Eddie Palmieri's Sentido. It was
by Harvey Averne and Eddie Palmieri, and recorded in a small town
called Blauvelt, New York. Palmieri packed a ferocious punch. Sentido
contained Puerto Rico and Adoración: both composed by Eddie and his
lead singer Ismael Quintana. Condiciones Que Existen (written by Palmieri) showed again the power of Latin rock and featured Harry Viggiano on electric guitar and studio musician Rick Marotta on drums.
We were playing at a dance up on Boston Post Road (Bronx) and I was
going through some financial situations at that time. I hadn't been recording
and sure enough, Harvey Averne came to the dance that night. I had trouble making the payroll and he said, `Can I help you with some money?' I couldn't believe it. Wow! I was able to pay the band and everything. He told me, `Look,
I'm starting a new company, I'd like to know if you're interested in signing with me to record,' and I said, Sure! A brand new company, I like challenges
like that. But I explained to him my situation with Tico and he said, `Well
let me have a partner talk to Tico and Morris Levy.' They made a monetary
arrangement for my first two recordings for Mango Records (which became Coco Records). They compensated Morris Levy with a certain amount of
money and bought me out of my contract for approximately thirty five
thousand dollars So, it was agreed upon and I signed with Mango.
The song Puerto Rico unquestionably became a modern-day classic
that's been re-recorded but never duplicated.
The late Barry Rogers' arranging skills were his best and the trumpet
virtuosity of Victor Paz was unheralded. Palmieri's orchestra was
    obviously up for this one

  • ÌFÉ: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

    April 27, 2018 | Felix Contreras --
When I first heard ÌFÉ I was stopped in my tracks. Literally. I pulled the car over and just listened.

I recognized Afro-Cuban drumming and chanting, but it was coming at me with electronic furnishings that made their drums and vocals sound like a futuristic spiritual ceremony.

ÌFÉ is from Puerto Rico and feature a surprising back story. The group's debut album, IIII+IIII, is a fresh electronic take on tradition that's winning over even the most devout practitioners of the western African-based spiritual ceremonies that form the base of their music. That's hard to do with ritual music.

For their turn behind the Tiny Desk, Otura Mun and his ensemble unplug their drums for their first tune, an acoustic version of their House of Love (Ogbe Yekun). The sound of the second song here is what startled me when I heard the band's debut CD last year: the parts normally performed on Afro-Cuban bata drums and chekeres are electronically treated for a traditional prayer for the deity Oduduwa. By the last tune, Bangah (Pico Y Palo), the electronics have created a sonic playground that plays perfectly against the battery of Afro-Cuban rhythms.

Listen for the explainer during the performance by Otura Mun, who also gives a shout out to those struggling against the vestiges of colonialism still prevalent in Puerto Rico.

    Read Alt.Latino's ÌFÉ primer.

    Set List

    House of Love (Ogbe Yekun)
    Prayer for Oduduwa (Para Meceditas)
    Bangah (Pico y Palo)

Otura Mun (vocals/percussion); Beho Torrens (vocals/percussion); Rafael Maya (vocals/percussion); Anthony Siera (vocals/percussion); Yaimir Cabám (vocals/guitar/percussion)

Producers: Felix Contreras, Bronson Arcuri; Creative Director: Bob Boilen; Audio Engineer: Josh Rogosin; Videographers: Bronson Arcuri, Maia Stern, Dani Lyman; Production Assistant: Joshua Bote; Photo: Eslah Attar/NPR.

  • Puerto Rico is Music

Friday nights in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico brings out artists of all genres to share their music and artistry with people at different locations and squares throughout the old city. Here, a night of traditional Bomba music and dance was celebrated at Plaza Colon. While there was a group designated to perform, people sometimes would spontaneously break out into dance, and I was fortunate to capture one who was moved to dance. Note how the lead drummer follows the steps of the dancer who improvises rhythms through the use of her feet and body.
