  • Music of Pakistan, Lahore - Râga Yaman

    26:04

    ●▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬●
Artists: Khan, Bary Fateh Ali - harmonium
Khan, Bary Fateh Ali - vocals
    Ershad Hussain - tabla
    Sabir, Ghulam - tanpura
    Khan, Nazim Ali - sarangi
    Ali, Mustaq - tanpura
    Ali, Sultan Fateh - svarmandal
Album:The Music of Islam, Vol. 13: Music of Pakistan, Lahore.
    Year: 1998

Ten years in the making, The Music of Islam series recorded in Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, Yemen, Pakistan, Indonesia, Iran and Qatar represents the most comprehensive sound documentation available to Westerners today, of a world religion dating back to 1/622. Although governed by strict rules for fourteen centuries, contact with other cultures has radically affected Islamic music throughout history. As the world enters the XV/21st century the timing of this collection serves an even larger purpose, documenting the traditions that have survived and will continue to survive for centuries to come. Today, one fifth of the world's population, one billion people, are Muslims, occupying a large territory stretching from the Atlantic shore of north and west Africa, through west, central, and south Asia to island southeast Asia, and attracting an increasing following in India, western Europe, north America, east Asia, and southern Africa. This is a global presence which cannot be ignored.

Many orthodox Muslims have traditionally held that music is generally detrimental to the listener's religious life, and as a result there is relatively little sacred music in Islam. But there is some. Central to Islamic life is the chanting of the holy scripture, the Qur'an. Two associated works, the call to prayer known as ezan (adhon) and the tekbir, are known throughout the Islamic world, and are also performed in a highly stylized, richly embroidered style of chant. These prayers are the subject of this volume. A further prayer, the mevlud (mawlid) and regional prayers for the month of Ramadan are reserved for special occasions. All of these sacred works are sung/recited (the distinction becomes almost a semantic one in these performances in Arabic, of course); but difference in pronunciation and inflection have led to distinctly regional styles of performance. The five reciters recorded in this volume are all based in Istanbul, Turkey, where the tradition of Qur'anic chant is particularly strong.

The classical music of Pakistan has its roots in pre–Islamic times. Hence the names of the majority of ragas have Hindu connections and are from the Sanskirt language. Muslim musicians from Pakistan will generally sing in the Urdu language and the lyrics, if religious, will be in praise of Allah.

Islamic culture, and in particular Persia, has had a profound influence on the evolution of music. Today, Muslim musicians play a major role in the music world. Whether they are from Pakistan or India, names like Ustad Bary Fateh Ali Khan, Vilayat Khan, Amjad Ali Khan, or the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan are among the great musicians of the XIV/20th century.

In this recording, Ustad Bary Fateh Ali Khan presents three ragas for three different periods of the day: early morning, early evening and evening. The concept of set periods of the day to which ragas are attached is based upon how one generally feels at different times. This is further defined by scale and the ascending or descending structure of the raga. Each raga is in the tin-tal rhythmic cycle, the closest to the Western concept of 4/4 time.

  • Sufi Music of India & Pakistan

    55:42

Sufi music is the devotional music of the Sufis, inspired by the works of Sufi poets. Qawwali is the most well known form of Sufi music, and is most commonly found in the Sufi culture in South Asia. However, music is also central to the Sema ceremony of the whirling dervishes, which is set to a form of music called Ayin, a vocal and instrumental piece featuring Turkish classical instruments such as the ney (a reed flute). The West African gnawa is another form, and Sufis from Indonesia to Afghanistan to Morocco have made music central to their practices. Sufi love songs are often performed as ghazals and Kafi, a solo genre accompanied by percussion and harmonium, using a repertoire of songs by Sufi poets.

  • Faiza Mujahid _ Meri Zindagi - Pakistani Artist

    3:11

    Artist: Faiza Mujahid
    Song: Meri Zindagi
    Language: Urdu
    Country of origin: Pakistan

    Faiza Mujahid:
Faiza Mujahid's point of departure was the remarkably hummable and contagious tune Bandeya Ho. A joint effort by her and Khawar Jawad, for the Shoaib Mansoor film Khuda Kay Liye, propelled her into a singing sensation overnight.

Not only has she sung the vocals for this song but produced the composition as well. Her passion for music is not limited to vocal conditioning but a knack for creating compositions and writing her own lyrics -- as is the case for most of her songs.

Although Bandeya Ho marked a seminal point in her career, much controversy followed the release of Khuda Kay Liye and Faiza and Khawar parted ways to maintain individual careers as each believed in a different school of musical thought. Faiza's spirited step to maintain an independent presence in the music scene was continually tested for the next year or so whilst she decided to focus on her education and job. Realizing an important truth that there is no room for dilettantes in this business, she decided to brace herself for a career that whole heartedly acknowledged eating, sleeping, breathing music.

Having decided to keep a low profile, Faiza started working at FM 91 as a programming producer from 2009 onwards and maintained her contact with the world of music. It was especially during this period, that a burgeoning need to make music again became her sole priority.

I realized how much I miss making my music. I was going through a rough patch as everyone does in there 20's about making important decisions and discovering where they stand in life

Faiza's stress was to break boundaries as a female artist; hailing from a largely conservative society where a career in music is akin to a life of self-absorption debauchery ( although possibly true in the case of most music artists..). She had decided to become a model for women, young girls and the masses in general to fight for their dignity and social standing in society.

I know how to move on and just not sit at home and cry for help or ask God WHY ME?

Clearly, the subservient role of the woman as a housewife by the age of 19 was not a path she was willing to delve into. For the larger part, her new upcoming song Meri Zindagi was a result of enduring personal hardships, rebelling against the norm, and maturing as a strong willed individual who she hopes can inspire others to follow suit.
The coming-of-age song is a triumph for Faiza and speculates a vision where more women make independent initiatives to take reign of their lives. It is a song and an attitude that she has adopted not merely for what some may feel is a feminist-driven agenda, but an anthem for the vulnerable, exposed, and unprotected rise to the occasion.

  • World Music Portraits - Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan 2/6 - Music of Pakistan - Pakistanis Ruling the World

    10:00

World Music Portraits - Documentary made on Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (October 13, 1948 August 16, 1997), was a Punjabi musician from Pakistan, primarily a singer of Qawwali, the devotional music of the Sufis (a mystical tradition within Islam). He featured in Time magazine's 2006 list of 'Asian Heroes'.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was born on October 13, 1948 in the city of Faisalabad, Pakistan. He was the fifth child and first son of Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, a musicologist, vocalist, instrumentalist, and Qawwal. Khan's family, which included his four older sisters and his younger brother, Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan grew up in central Lyallpur. In 1979, Khan married his first cousin, Naheed (the daughter of Fateh Ali Khan's brother, Salamat Ali Khan); they had one daughter, Nida.

Khan began by learning to play tabla alongside his father before progressing to learn Raag Vidya and Bolbandish. He then went on to learn to sing within the classical framework of khayal. Khan's training with his father was cut short when his father died in 1964, leaving Khan's paternal uncles, Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan and Ustad Salamat Ali Khan, to complete his training.

Khan teamed with Peter Gabriel on the soundtrack to The Last Temptation of Christ in 1985, with Canadian musician Michael Brook (on the albums Mustt Mustt (1990) and Night Song (1996))[3],[unreliable source?] and with Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder in 1995 on two songs for the soundtrack to Dead Man Walking. He also contributed to the soundtrack of Natural Born Killers.

Peter Gabriel's Real World label later released five albums of Nusrat's traditional Qawwali, together with some of his experimental work which included the albums Mustt Mustt and Star Rise. Nusrat provided vocals for The Prayer Cycle, which was put together by Jonathan Elias, but died before the vocals could be completed. Alanis Morissette was brought in to sing with his unfinished vocals. He also performed traditional Qawwali before international audiences at several WOMAD world music festivals and the single Dam Mast Qalandar was remixed by electronic trip hop group Massive Attack in 1998.

His album Intoxicated Spirit was nominated for a Grammy award in 1997 for best traditional folk album.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan holds the world record for the largest recorded output by a Qawwali artist—a total of 125 albums as of 2001.

Khan was taken ill with kidney and liver failure on August 11, 1997 in London, England while on the way to Los Angeles in order to receive a kidney transplant. He died of a sudden cardiac arrest at Cromwell Hospital, London, on Saturday, August 16, 1997, aged 48.

After his death, the song Solemn Prayer, on which Nusrat provided vocals, was used by Peter Gabriel on his album Up and in the soundtrack to the film Blood Diamond - Music of Pakistan
