  • Pussycat - Mississippi 1975

    4:35

    Pussycat - Mississippi 1975

Where you can hear a country song from far
and someone plays the honky-tonk guitar
Where all the lights will go out one by one
    the people join the sun
and the wind takes it away

Where the Mississippi rolls down to the sea
and lovers found a place they'd like to be
how many times before the song was ending
    love and understanding
    everywhere around

    Mississippi, I'll remember you
    whenever I should go away
I'll be longing for the day
that I will be in Greenville again

Mississippi, you'll be on my mind
    everytime I hear this song
    Mississippi roll along
    until the end of time

Now the country song for ever lost its soul
when the guitar player turned to rock and roll
and everytime when summernights are falling
I always will be calling dreams of yesterday

    Mississippi, I'll remember you
    whenever I should go away
I'll be longing for the day
that I will be in Greenville again

Mississippi, you'll be on my mind
    everytime I hear this song
    Mississippi roll along
    until the end of time

    Everytime I hear this song
    Mississippi roll along
    until the end of time.

Mississippi Pussycat Played By Rico On Yamaha Tyros 4 Roland G70

Mississippi was a popular single by Dutch group Pussycat. Written by Werner Theunissen and produced by Eddy Hilberts, Mississippi was the sole number one single for Pussycat, spending four weeks at number one on the UK singles chart in October 1976.[1] The song was promoted by John Saunders Hughes in the UK through a Liverpool radio station. The lyrics are about the history of music, how rock music became more popular than country music.

Another version of this song was recorded by Barbara Fairchild. There is also a version in Spanish called Te necesito by the Colombian singer Fernando Calle.

In 1979, Swedish dansband Vikingarna covered the song in Swedish, with lyrics by Margot Borgström. The Swedish song title was also Mississippi.[2]

There was also a Czech version of this song performed by singer and actress Petra Černocká

  • Congo to the Mississippi | Playing For Change | Song Around The World feat. Grandpa Elliott

    4:48

From our new album, Listen to the Music, available now:

This song was co-written by Mermans Mosengo and my brother, Greg Johnson, a few years ago while we were on tour with the PFC Band. The simple message and anthemic chorus made me really excited to record it as a PFC Song Around The World. We started under the hot African sun in the village of Lukala in the Congo and we added musicians wherever we traveled for the past few years until we finally added the final piece with Grandpa Elliott playing the harmonica solo in New Orleans. Someday we’ll all be free, until then, music is our ammunition.

  • African-American Fife & Drum Music: Mississippi & Jamaica

    1:14

This is archival (?which) footage of a fife and drum group of Ed and Lonnie Young of Mississippi. I believe it was recorded by Alan Lomax, sometime between 1959 and the early 60s. They use a fife made of cane, and drums adapted from military bands.

It is interesting how similar it is, not just in form but also in actual content, to the fife and drum playing of John Canoe processional music of Jamaica. I have put just a quick sample of that from a 1954 recording, at the end.

[My purpose for posting is to draw out this comparison, which would probably not be noticed otherwise (the clip being buried in Martin Scorcese's documentary on Blues), but if it appears to infringe someone's copyright, please contact me.]

EDIT: This footage was shot during the 1966 Newport Folk Festival, indeed by Alan Lomax. Ed Young plays the fife; Lonnie Young, Sr., the snare; and G.D. Young, the bass drum. Lomax's audio recordings from Newport '66, including those of the Youngs, are available through the online archive of the Association for Cultural Equity (Alan Lomax Archive). - AlanLomaxArchive

    3:16

„Sitting On Top Of The World
    (Hawks -- Jefferson - Simmons)

    Recorded:
    no details available

The Mississippi Sheiks were a popular and influential guitar and fiddle group of the 1930s. They were notable mostly for playing country blues but were adept at many styles of United States popular music of the time, and their records were bought by both black and white audiences. Country blues is often seen as being the domain of individual musicians, a stereotype propagated by the way such delta blues performers as Robert Johnson and Charley Patton have entered the popular consciousness. Of the smaller number of groups playing at the time, the Mississippi Sheiks are among the better known and most influential among their peers.

In 2004, they were inducted in the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame. Their 1930 blues single Sitting on Top of the World was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008.

The Mississippi Sheiks consisted mainly of the Chatmon family, who came from Bolton, Mississippi and were well known throughout the Mississippi Delta; the father of the family had been a musicianer during times of black slavery, and his children carried on the musical spirit. Their most famous (although by no means permanent) member was Armenter Chatmon - better known as Bo Carter - who managed a successful solo career as well as playing with the Sheiks, which may have contributed to their success. The band named themselves after Rudolph Valentino's film The Sheik (1921).

When the band first recorded in 1930, the line-up consisted of Carter with Lonnie and Sam Chatmon, and Walter Vinson. Charlie McCoy (not to be confused with Charlie McCoy, a later American musician) played later, when Bo Carter and Sam Chatmon ceased playing full time. It was Lonnie Chatmon and Vinson who formed the real centre of the group.

Bo Carter's solo work is notable for being sexually suggestive in songs such as My Pencil Won't Write No More and this is carried on to an extent with the group; however, like Carter himself the Mississippi Sheiks rarely used double entendres. They primarily earned their income like Robert Johnson and Skip James. They toured throughout the South of the U.S., but also reached as far north as Chicago and New York.

Their first and biggest success was Sitting On Top Of The World (1930), later to be recorded by Howlin' Wolf, Nat King Cole, Bill Monroe, Bob Wills (numerous times), Harry Belafonte, Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead and Jack White, and re-done by Robert Johnson, and called Come On in My Kitchen. Throughout their five active years, the Mississippi Sheiks recorded over seventy songs for the Okeh, Paramount and Bluebird labels.

When the band dissolved in 1935 the Chatmon brothers gave up music and returned to being farmers, the most common occupation of black people in rural Mississippi.

The Sheiks and related groups under other names, such as Mississippi Mud Steppers and Blacksnakes, recorded about a hundred sides in the first half of the 1930s, among them original compositions (probably by Vinson) like The World is Going Wrong and I've Got Blood in My Eyes For You (1931) - both recorded by Bob Dylan - or the topical Sales Tax (1934)
